I was unhappy with U of M, and decided to try New Moon Midwifery, whose office is in the building where I was taking my holistic childbirth classes. I could not have possibly had a better pregnancy and birthing experience. I worked with Amanda and Merrilynne, and a few apprentices. My pre-natal care was very loving and one-on-one. I did not feel like a number. I had at-home visits. They answered all my questions and concerns and then some. I originally planned to have a waterbirth, but my son was born too quickly (within three hours) so there was no time! There was some overlap in my health care between U of M and New Moon. I could really tell the difference in attitudes. With New Moon I was really given a good view from both sides -- I wasn't just given the worst-case-scenario treatment. For instance, when I tested positive for Group B strep and U of M said that I would automatically have to go on anti-biotics in the hospital, New Moon sat down with me and went through all of the facts regarding Group B strep and allowed me to make my own decision. Amanda was there when I was in labor and I was so comfortable and felt so safe. Being able to give birth at home with people I trusted and loved made the experience bearable. I also loved vocalizing and not having to do that Lamaze stuff -- I seriously don't know how I could have survived contractions doing Lamaze, the vocalizations I created on my own was a huge coping strategy. I can't begin to tell you how happy my experience was and how good it was for my baby! After I gave birth I took an amazing herbal bath and healed all my wounds quickly, and my son also took these herbal baths and his umbilical cord fell off in only two days! I feel it is important to say this because I think sometimes there is a stigma attached to women who choose natural childbirth at home. I especially love their breastfeeding room where they have a breastfeeding group that meets regularly. Everyone who works there is incredibly helpful, especially Beth. I was concerned about post partum depression, and she took me aside and helped me with finding resources. She spent a lot of time one on one with me so I could talk about my concerns. I was shocked (in a good way!) that the consultation before the massage was quite thorough and did not cut into our hour of massage time. She has a prenatal table with a cutout/basket to support the belly, so I was able to lay on my stomach for the first portion (at 38 weeks pregnant this is the best thing ever!) I went in with a lot of tension, soreness, and stiffness in my hips and low back (pretty typical pregnancy aches and pains) and left feeling very close to normal and tension-free. I've also had more energy all day since receiving the massage. The office is decorated really nicely - clean, modern, and calming. She played relaxing music during the massage and the temperature was very comfortable in the room. Her location is easy-to-find and there was a reserved parking space for massage clients just outside the door. I plan to return for a post-natal massage and highly recommend Exie's massage services to all pregnant women looking for some relief and relaxation. I'm already working with another birth doula, but if I were still looking, I would certainly consider hiring Exie as my doula.

It was…read morebasically word of mouth that I was encouraged to switch from Women's First in Royal Oak and delivering at Beaumont to The ABC. And I honestly can't express how extraordinary my labor experience was. The level of care provided to me and my beautiful son was unmatched. When I was a patient at Women's First - I felt there was very little attention paid to educating first time parents and the overall care was very industrialized (even from the Midwife) it's basically churning out care and I have really heard negative things about the coldness of care at Beaumont. Without getting too deep into the details - I had a very long labor (30+ hours) - ended up getting drugs - and pushed for 4 straight hours. Every step of the way my hand was held by the beautiful woman of the ABC (Midwives Emily, Andrea, Danielle and Nurses Christy & Jesse) all supported me like family - joined by our doula (Metro Detroit Doula Service (a must) and my husband. It was difficult and unbelievable all wrapped in one huge life changing experience. We also were so well cared for after the fact in the wonderful ABC (we stayed 2 nights) and I really believe the success my son & I have had with breastfeeding is due to the great guidance of the nurses. I wish more women/families knew this is how your birth experience should/can be. I will sing their praises forever and hope they understand the valuable place they have within our family. It seems amazing care is rare these days. If you're thinking about the ABC you're in the best hands.
