I really wanted to have…read morea special pregnancy and birthing experience -- I firmly believe that childbirth is not a sickness, and that hospital births take a lot away from this very amazing time. I was unhappy with U of M, and decided to try New Moon Midwifery, whose office is in the building where I was taking my holistic childbirth classes. I could not have possibly had a better pregnancy and birthing experience. I worked with Amanda and Merrilynne, and a few apprentices. My pre-natal care was very loving and one-on-one. I did not feel like a number. I had at-home visits. They answered all my questions and concerns and then some. I originally planned to have a waterbirth, but my son was born too quickly (within three hours) so there was no time! There was some overlap in my health care between U of M and New Moon. I could really tell the difference in attitudes. With New Moon I was really given a good view from both sides -- I wasn't just given the worst-case-scenario treatment. For instance, when I tested positive for Group B strep and U of M said that I would automatically have to go on anti-biotics in the hospital, New Moon sat down with me and went through all of the facts regarding Group B strep and allowed me to make my own decision. Amanda was there when I was in labor and I was so comfortable and felt so safe. Being able to give birth at home with people I trusted and loved made the experience bearable. I also loved vocalizing and not having to do that Lamaze stuff -- I seriously don't know how I could have survived contractions doing Lamaze, the vocalizations I created on my own was a huge coping strategy. I can't begin to tell you how happy my experience was and how good it was for my baby! After I gave birth I took an amazing herbal bath and healed all my wounds quickly, and my son also took these herbal baths and his umbilical cord fell off in only two days! They have weekly classes and get-togethers, as well as pop-up events, all the with aim of providing space and connection for parents. During my little's first three months, I attended their Mama Circles and their breastfeeding support group. Both of these groups were super supportive and non-judgmental, and allowed me, a first-time parent, to ask all the little questions that I had about raising a human. Plus, they usually had great snacks at these groups. Now, as my little is over a year old (cue sobs), I get to utilize their new space in a different way: fun classes! We've checked out their Bilingual Storytime and Rhythm/Motion classes; both classes were thoughtfully executed and engaging. Parenting is hard, and googling stuff on the interwebs just isn't the same as having a good conversation with a fellow parent who is going through the same ish that you are. On Tuesday she still wasn't keeping anything down and you could tell she lost some weight. I said you know what let's get a hold of Dr. Kardos, so he got us in immediately....he took her straight back into the room he did something where he just rubbed her little tiny jaw and he rubbed on the middle of her back and whatever it was that he did we got her home and she drank two bottles that evening, and she started going potty. She slept through it all. It was a complete change in her. It was actually unbelievable not only that just the care that he used with her was just unreal he truly truly cared about the baby.
