I have never seen another park like this in the middle of a city. This was a little oasis among the…read moretraffic and grime. I'm so glad I got to discover this place for myself. The park is beautiful and has the right mix of factors to make this a place everyone can enjoy going to. Off Little York Road, near the Library and post office, you find a small chunk of land that is multifaceted. From the main parking lot you will find you are surrounded by several baseball fields where games are going on, even on a rainy day. If you enter the main park from this side, you will come across a playground area. Here's something I wish was around when I was a kid- each playground has a built up section that is useful for either younger or shorter children. An example would be a swing set where one is at the normal height and one has a few inches of elevation- somewhere amongst all my pictures is a specific example of this. There are also small, covered pavilions with one or two picnic tables each. There were four or five of these, mostly to the right of the entrance. There is a walking path that goes around the very large pond. If you want to stay on concrete then there is plenty of the path where you can avoid getting muddy, but it's only on the first half of the park (from that entrance) and mostly around the inner part of the pond. On my first visit I was thrilled to see people actually fishing! Not just fishing, but catching fish! Also, it's not every day that you see fly fishing in a city park. There are rules posted in multiple sections, mostly around the lake. This is a catch and release system, which can still be fun. From what I gathered, they have catfish, bass and trout. There is actual wildlife! A ton of fowl and water creatures here. Not all are pretty, I discovered what a nutria is! It's basically a giant water rat. On the upside, you also see turtles and can feed ducks and other birds. This is definitely more of a family oriented park rather than a place of solitude. At least that's what I gathered from one weekday visit and one visit on a Saturday. There were lots of children and pets and family activities. People are also walking or jogging on the path. There is plenty to do, but in regards to the lake you have to keep it to fishing- no swimming, wading or boating allowed. I didn't notice it on my weekday visit, but on the Saturday afternoon visit I saw several park personnel riding around on golf carts. If you were to continue to the right you would be walking on a dirt and gravel path around the pond and by the trees. I wonder if there are a cluster of this many trees anywhere else in Houston? Maybe, but not one I've seen yet. At the back of the park, only accessible by the dirt paths, but easiest if you take a left from the main entrance, is a volleyball court and a wooden pavilion. This is the furthest point of the park and there is a small parking lot on this end as well. It can hold quite a few cars, but I would estimate a max of 25 if it was packed. Due to the width, it's less ideal for longer trucks, unless the other vehicles are more spread out. The gazebo is the only pavilion like option that is wooden. It's circular and reminds me of older structures built for fellowship and feels very nostalgic. This is not a park where you can reserve a pavilion for events. It's first come, first serve. If you are there when the park opens the gates (main entrance first) then you have your chance to stake out an area, but you have to stay because it's use it or lose it. During the week they open at 7am and on the weekends it's 8am. My most recent visit was for a memorial service on what turned out to be a very rainey, cold and windy day. Even on this day the park was absolutely packed. There were two other events being held at the park and there were two or three games waiting to hear if they would get rained out and plenty of people fishing. So again, not a private place, but still a great place that was still lovely despite the weather.

There's also a playground here and a covered area with picnic benches for picnics/cookouts. A lot of room for kids to play. Not much else to say. People genuinely pay attention to their pups, play with them, and interact beautifully with the other dogs. It's also incredibly clean and well-mowed, with most owners being very responsible about picking up after their pets. The shaded areas and covered patios are perfect for sitting and chatting, and both the large and small dog parks offer plenty of room to run, along with nice concrete walking trails.

Hearthstone Park, now named Bob Allen Park, is my favorite place to walk any time of day. It's…read morelocated in Hearthstone near the country club and is open to the public because it's funded by MUD money. I usually go before 6AM so I can exercise without getting too hot and sweaty. There's very little parking at the actual park and the blacktop is poorly maintained, but I live nearby and can either walk or bring the golf cart. The park is beautifully landscaped and the Hearthstone Garden Club has planted the most amazing flowers and trees. One of the trees is dedicated to my late mother, Carolyn Edwards. There are a few more memorial trees and I feel at peace knowing how much my mother would have loved her tree. On her birthday and Mother's Day I usually bring flowers and place them around the plaque dedicated to her. I'm not sure who, but some other people leave flowers too. I feel so much love when I pass by. The park also has a few different playgrounds for different ages and my grandchildren love them. There's soccer and baseball areas, as well as a couple neatly maintained walking paths. Additionally, there's a water fountain (it's usually not working properly), dog poop bags, and a couple of trash cans to dispose of the waste. The only negatives are that many people (mostly residents of Hearthstone) will bring their unleashed dogs and allow them to roam and poop wherever. These same people can't be bothered to pick it up as the rules don't apply to them. There's also the ladies who bring their dogs in a stroller and that's hysterical! I don't bring my dog because of the other pet owners thoughtless actions. They aren't the majority, but this is why we can't have nice things. Other than that, I would say that I love Bob Allen Park and I'm grateful that there's such a lovely place nearby for my walks.
