Disappointing Taco Tuesday... Read many positive reviews on their taqueria inside market. Arrived around 7pm to place order to go (tacos only). Checked yelp pics and menu prior. Had high hopes for these tacos.. Worst part - all corn tortillas were hard & dry edges on every single taco. Not fresh, not soft. If you don't have a good tortilla, you're not going to have a good taco experience - period. We tried them all (most of). He had Lomo, Carnita, Asada, Pollo, Chile relleno & Picadillo. I had the 3 taco plate: Carnita, Asada & Relleno. As a side note, my plate did not include a roasted pepper or green onion as shown in pics. Maybe they changed this.. Taco plate comes with refried beans (nice consistency) and Mexican rice. Rice tasted like it was sitting around for awhile. Asada was ok..not fatty or gristly & portion was fine, but could have used more flavor. Carnita was DRY. Didn't care for meat quality. My guy didn't finish his and neither did I. Chille Rellano was good and best out of them all. If you likes lots of gooey cheese, you'll find it here. Lightly floured. I loved the green hot sauce (reminded me of avocado sauce, maybe it was) though my guy thought the heat level was high....I didn't think this was overly hot at all, but that's me. Toppings are generous (lettuce, cheese, sour cream and avocado (a must have for me). Lime wedges also included. Maybe food is better during afternoon / lunch hours? Who knows. What I do know is these tortilla's should have never left the kitchen... Consensus? Nothing special about these tacos. Total: $28

I won't try to pretend I'm an expert when it comes to authentic Mexican cuisine, but I think my credentials of having visited Mexico (Tijuana) once on a partial day trip with my entire family speak for themselves. And while I'm not normally one to toot my own horn, I'm pretty sure Rick Bayless is keeping tabs on this almost-expert of south-of-the-border eats. **Note: This review is strictly for the little restaurant inside of Carnicerias Jimenez, as I a feverishly focused on eating my weight in Mexican food for a recent taco tour organized by the always on point Ericka A. **end note I'll be honest and say that while the ordering process for someone like me who doesn't know enough Spanish to get through the mixing instructions for instant Abuelita was a bit stressful, it did end up all working out and for an incredibly nominal fee I was able to chow 2 chile relleno tacos (the only veggie taco option that I could translate well enough to know it was meat-free), the largest size horchata they offer, as well as a really bizarre colored multi-fruit yogurt cup that looked like bad cafeteria food but tasted like sweet, super fruit heaven. Beyond being cheap and the food being pretty darn good, the real thing that won me over on our Saturday afternoon tour was the full live mariachi band playing in the restaurant against the backdrop of a ridiculously giant mural of a sailing clipper ship. Absolutely made my meal and ruined me for all other future tacos. Why have just any old tacos when I could have Carnicerias Jimenez tacos with a simultaneous pirate/mariachi serenade? My point exactly. Another high point was when my food order came out, I began to eat, and then saw the little old guy who made my tacos come out from behind the kitchen, walk up to the mariachi band mic, give the band a look, and then belt out a Pavarotti-esque balled is Spanish with full backing from his mariachi amigos. I have to say that I hate when people use the word 'epic' all willy nilly, but this was a seriously gangster moment that I'll never forget. Talented tacos, through and through.

Stop numero 3 on the UYE: Lake Street Taco Tour and by far the best atmosphere on the whole tour. When you walk in the taqueria/restaurant is to the left. There's a huge menu painted on the wall above the kitchen, so needless to say, you can't miss it. Everyone on the tour went up, ordered, sat and waited for their order to be called. Pretty simple. I finally ended up choosing some barbacoa. The best choice of my LIFE! haha ok I'm exaggerating a bit but you get what I'm saying. It was just so juicy, warm and tasty (please check my pic out). I also ordered some jalapeños and cebollitas. The jalapeños were so hot which in turn made them go perfectly with the barbacoa. While I was sitting there enjoying my perfect barbacoa taco, there was a band setting up (again, check pics out), of course I went up and asked for a pic cause I'm dumb like that. Then they started playing and it was very entertaining. To top it off, the cook came out and handled that mic like a boss! lol No joke, he was pretty good. Some people veered off to the panaderia for some churros, mexican cookies and bread. Smelled and looked delicious. I've visited Jimenez before to buy bbq groceries. Their prices are comparable and their produce and meat selection are decent. I will continue going back with friends and family to enjoy the delicious tacos and "guisos" that Jimenez has to offer, as well as the entertainment.

Carne Asada and Al Pastor Tacos with Cilantro and Onion

Cheap amazing tacos and groceries all in one place. I got the Carne Asada and Al Pastor tacos(uploaded picture to the picture section) and they were very delicious. The meat was not too dry or too greasy. Very flavorful. Tacos are surprisingly easy to screw up at certain places but here they know what they are doing. They also have a smattering of other Mexican dinner options and delicious ice cream.

Tacos: lengua (bottom left), al pastor (top left), and carne asada (right)

This review is for the taqueria section of the supermercado. This is, without a doubt, one of the best places to get authentic tacos. I recommend the lengua, al pastor, and carnitas (although the carne asada is great too). They are very generous on the meat, which is great quality. They have onions and cilantro (they do have american toppings if that's what you want) and they include lots of lime wedges, a deep fried jalapeno, and a deep fried onion with each order (of tacos)! Even the giant burritos are fantastic. The green salsa is to die for... it's extremely good too. The prices are very reasonable, where tacos are $2 on average and the burritos are like $7. I only go here for tacos and burritos when this place is open. I also love how I'm able to practice my spanish as well.

3 pork carnitas tacos and a soda for $4. What a steal!

They have fresh produce as well as a meat shop and a decent selection of Middle Eastern and Asian groceries. They hade a good selection of the Turkish delights that looked fresh and home made, We got a whole bunch of different flavors and they were all very good. The customer service could have been better. The lady behind the counter didn't seem too happy to see us but maybe she was just having a bad day. Overall, we got what we wanted and it tasted good. Kiddos were happy so, we were happy.

They also have a large variety of products in cans, jars, and packages - olives, nuts, grains, spices, stuffed grape leaves, etc. But my favorite is the excellent selection of flatbreads. This time I got a two-pack of huge (about 18 inches by 12 inches) poofy ones called taboons - $5 for the two of them and each weighed about a pound. They're very good plain, with olive oil and maybe a bit of flaky sea salt and/or rosemary, with butter, or in sandwiches and pizzas. The listed ingredients are flour, water, milk, sugar, salt, and yeast - no junk and they taste neither sweet nor salty. Plus, if you've not been here, it will be a fun place to explore.
