She started with my favorite outfit... By the end, it was just me and your guitar. Felt amazing!" My story: I have overcome some really, really tough circumstances in the last few years. And last summer, for the first time in over 10 years, I began focussing on me. I put myself first and set out to become a healthier version of my former self. One of my goals was to lose 100 lbs. That's a lofty goal, but after 6 months of hard work and discipline, I'd lost 50 lbs. I was halfway to my goal and then my weight loss stalled out. I'd always told myself, "when I get to my goal weight, I'll reward myself with a boudoir session." But having stalled, and even backpedaled a bit on my weight loss journey, I reflected on everything I've already accomplished. I have come so far and that deserves to be celebrated! So I began my search for a photographer. Earthkind was about the third photographer that popped up on my search. The name "Earthkind" immediately caught my attention because I am a very natural person. I rarely wear make-up, try to eat whole foods, use natural cleaning products, and have a little homestead with where I grow my own vegetables and go out each morning to collect eggs from my chickens. When I began looking through Terra's portfolio, I knew she was "the one." Terra made the entire process wonderful. From the very first conversation, I could tell she was "my people." When I arrived for the shoot, she greeted me with a smile and helped me carry my things in. I've got to be honest, the whole thing was so awkward at first, if you've never done this before, it's just going to be. The thought of stripping down to your birthday suit, or close to it, in front of a total stranger is scary! Her hairdresser and make-up artist (who were both great too!) got straight to work fussing over me and I was offered something to drink. They began chatting with me and that helped me become more comfortable as I realized they were simply normal people just like me. They kept my look natural because I'd mentioned my desire to "still look like me." Once I was all done up, Terra went through a couple of really unexpected, but very powerful and calming, exercises. Next, we headed to the dressing room to discuss my goals for the shoot and look through the items I brought, including my boyfriend's guitar. She said she'd never used a guitar as a prop, but I loved that she was excited to see how we could work it in! When we began the actual photoshoot, it was really awkward. I'm just a very shy and modest person and this was totally out of my normal comfort zone. Terra was constantly reassuring, keeping the mood light, and full of positivity. She made it easy for me to relax and begin to feel more and more comfortable in my own skin. It was a very empowering experience. At the end of the day, I honestly felt so beautiful, powerful, and confident! And I truly believe that it was Terra's process, positive energy, and personality that made me feel this way. After meeting with a photographer, selecting a package, signing a contract, and setting a date for engagement photos, four months later my daughter discovered, the night before the engagement photos, that the photographer no longer worked for Brea, and somehow had not checked her messages in days. Praise to Brea herself, who stepped in at this critical moment to respond to e-mail notes and phone messages, and make the trip to our humble suburb to take care of the engagement photo session. I rationalized this stumble and recovery, imagining that many small business owners experience similar pains when entrusting work to others and/or taking a break. We experienced poor communication and flawed office procedures, followed by a good save by the boss. Subsequently, my daughter was assigned another photographer and assistant to complete the contract; the team arrived on time, and completed the job. Five weeks later, the results were available for viewing and download. Seven-hundred-plus wedding photos and perhaps 150 engagement photos. A photo booth for guests. In the end, there were approx. 1/3 the number of photos from my son's wedding by another firm last year, but perhaps more time given to editing out the duds, so it might be argued that the quality of these is higher. When I look at the photos, certainly I can see artistic shot framing and good photography skills. I also see a more pronounced worry line in the forehead of the bride's father.
