The sales department is okay, but the service department is absolutely terrible. In the span of 10 months I took my car back and forth there from Maryville at least 15 times. They never have a part in stock so it's two round trips to get diagnosed, and two round trips for the fix. I get that, but what I don't get are the re-repairs. They replaced the catalytic converter with a third party one before I bought the car, and it went bad so they installed an OEM one. I had a similar issue with the engine mounts. I do not recommend this place, and I will never buy a car from CarMax again. read more

This has been the biggest joke of a car buying experience. For 2 months I've been trying to buy a car. I have gone to the lot no less than 4 times expecting to leave with my car, only to be disappointed by totally foreseeable circumstances. The 1st car they tried to sell me I later found out needed a new battery 5 times in the 3 weeks. They did not tell me this until the car wouldn't start after I had to bring the car back the 2nd day I had it because of a separate tire and wheel issue. I came in today to get the replacement car, and of all things, the key fob is broken, which they've know since Sunday, qnd has not been fixed by our appointment time. The sales manager could truly care less and only offers excuses that only shed more light on the dysfunctional nature of this operation. Genuinely the worst company to buy a car from. My girlfriend bought a car from this location and it has been never ending problems. The first was the price. Their "No Haggle" pricing is just a way the bend you over for a less than worth it vehicle. Completing the paperwork was a breeze because my husband had completed most of it online. Dawn walked us through the process, explaining everything as we went. She was very welcoming when we arrived, offering us something to drink. We felt very comfortable with her, as well. The vehicle was detailed nicely and was just as promised. JUST DON'T - find a different dealership. I purchased a used Toyota SUV. There was an issue with brakes immediately. CarMax fixed them at no charge. A week or two later, I discovered the moon roof "leaked" (read: downpour inside your vehicle). Since I had a "30-day, no-questions-asked" return policy, and I had an uneasiness about the vehicle, I returned the vehicle on the 30th day. Not as easy as they make it sound. After many conversations with different level managers; they finally called the "top" supervisor/manager. This guy convinced me that it was a great car and I should keep it. He, literally, told me "I, personally, have your back on this one". He forgot to mention that "[he] had my back" until "Day 31" of the return policy. They completely screwed me over - all while smiling, shaking hands, and declaring "[We] have your back; we won't let you down". Always trust your gut feeling. read more

I purchased a used vehicle in July of 2024 for my daughter to drive to college. We didn't need anything fancy but something reliable was important. We settled on a low miles Nissan Kicks. We test drove it, looked it over well, and did the paperwork to buy it. After everything was completed, to my surprise the salesperson handed me a single key and said "here's your key". I asked for both keys and was told they only have the one. But I was told it's not hard to buy a programmable key online; which is so not true. That was the first lie I heard from CarMax. After a week of not being able to get a backup key made, I took the car back and asked to exchange it for one with 2 keys. I give them credit, this was a hassle-free event and we traded it for a Ford Escape in excellent shape. But when we came in to pick it up, the battery was dead and they said they needed to take it to service. It took them 3 days to complete the service and I was told they put a brand new battery in it. I didn't raise the hood to check, I took them at their word and this was lie number 2. Three months after buying this car, and right after the warranty expired, the battery died and left my daughter stranded. After raising the hood to jump start the car, it became obvious the car had the original 5 year old battery in it. CarMax wasn't obligated to put a new battery in this car, but they told me that they had. I've been under the false security that my daughter was safe and secure in this car only to later learn that she was at risk with a defective battery that CarMax knew about, didn't fix, and lied to me that they had fixed. This is my second purchase from CarMax, and I can assure them that this will be the last purchase from them. I'll give them credit for their no-haggle policy and for the simple exchange process. But telling me lies is a deal breaker for me. And that will be the last lie they tell me. read more

Poor first experience, first car was involved in an accident and had multiple owners which wasn't discovered until after we had committed to buy. Second car after declining the first also had damage that made through delivery inspection which should have been caught. Our request for curbside somehow didn't happen and there were several unmasked employees and customers inside while we signed documents. Guess they're not taking COVID19 seriously? Volvo also declined warranty coverage after it was discovered the car showed signs of neglect with the most obvious being the last oil change at roughly 19k miles on 12/28/19. I purchased the car at 31.8k and apparently service can't immediately locate service records while the car was under their care. Tried to salvage the deal by seeing if Maxcare will reimburse for OEM warranty work @ Clayton Volvo as sales described. Nope! Must use Repairpal authorized mechanics. If it weren't for the excessive multiple inquiries because they can't seem to execute a sales contract without typos I'd head for the hills and still might. Stay Away! read more

HORRIBLE! I would NEVER try to purchase a vehicle from CarMax in Knoxville. I purchased a BMW X5 that was advertised with a 'SMART KEY'. I was only given one key fob when I originally purchased and went back the next day with my check from my credit union to pay for the car. I then asked for the second key fob as you can't set up the 'SMART KEY' without both key fobs. The sales manager promptly told me to hang on to my check and that he wasn't authorized to approve the second key fob. (He knew this would be an issue and was kind enough to tell me to keep my check until this was worked out.) I was directed to the GM Kevin McDowell, who has been there for 10 yrs according to linkedin listing. Let's just say he's TERRIBLE at customer service and severely lacks professionalism. He only wanted to argue what the 'SMART KEY' feature did and said that the actual key fob was the 'SMART KEY'. I then gave him the definition of the feature directly from BMW's website. He still continued to argue with me. I let him know that he was falsely advertising cars with that feature because it's impossible to set up without (2) key fobs. He absolutely didn't care at all about anything I had to say. I spoke to him several times and the BEST he offered was for ME to pay HIS cost for a second key fob! He made that sound like he was doing ME a favor by offering for ME to pay HIS cost. LAWD!! He just didn't get it and completely didn't care! Again, CarMax advertised this car with a 'SMART KEY' which is totally false if you don't offer (2) key fobs - you can't set it up without both. All Kevin could say if I didn't want the car to return it. He didn't care AT ALL if I purchase the vehicle. It was beyond him to comprehend the fact he was FALSE ADVERTISING a car with a 'SMART KEY' feature and not providing both key fobs so you can actually set up this feature. I then proceeded to call CarMax corporate customer service and let them know the issue I was having locally. Well, let's say their Customer Service is TERRIBLE as well. They has the same message as the GM Kevin McDowell, they didn't care at all if I returned the car. The message from CarMax was clear, I was just a number and they would sell that car to someone else that didn't know about the 'SMART KEY' feature until it was too late. Lucky for me, I RETURNED THE CAR to CarMax and went up the street to a dealership with TRUE Customer Service - MERCEDES-BENZ OF KNOXVILLE!! They were awesome!! I explained all I had been through with CarMax and how no one at CarMax even cared if I purchased the car. If you're in the market for a new car - definitely go see MERCEDES-BENZ of KNOXVILLE. They truly understand the value of a customer!! The CarMax motto is if you don't like the car return it. The false advertising from CarMax is unacceptable. Carmax used to be our go to for car purchases and services (we've owned two other luxury cars from them pre-COVID), but the entire service department has gone downhill such that we will NEVER make another purchase from Carmax Knoxville TN ever again. They have had our Mercedes Benz 550 SUV for nearly 4 weeks, after only having purchased it less than 2 months ago in May 2024. They couldn't fix it in-house so they dropped it off to the dealer without any feedback or check ins, or even a timetable to communicate to us. Every time we called for an update, they hadn't checked on it, and would later call to tell us that it's still waiting for a part. Still waiting for a part. Now waiting for a different part. Then we'd get it and it was still unfixed, so we sent it back. Oh, need another part. Well, the part came in three weeks later, only to find out they needed two parts, well looky here, that part will be here in less than a week. But of course, no timeline as to when I will actually get my car back. The car that I paid $40k for but haven't driven in nearly a month. I called to complain and one of the service managers hung up on me because I pressed him about whether they have been in contact with Mercedes or are they just leaving my car there and not managing the process. Their business-to-business relationship is probably about as tarnished as the relationship they have with customers, no wonder Mercedes Knoxville won't prioritize their work. The questions I have been asking have been reasonable questions but because they don't have an efficient process, they feel defensive, and their ineptitude is obvious. The lead service manager is nice enough when he wants to be but is running the loosest ship I've ever seen with far from quality staff. We worked with a sales rep named Tasha and she was incredible! She was able to help us find the perfect car, always answered our phone calls, and was just plain awesome! To me, the thing that sets CarMax apart from other dealerships is the customer service. On the way home from the dealership, our new Mercedes broke down. My husband called CarMax and they immediately sprang into action. They offered us a tow truck, put us in a brand new Infiniti Q50 and sent our new car to the shop without missing a beat. I thought the car buying process was fairly smooth, but as it turns out, it's all a sham. They sold me an unsafe car and don't care about it. Their vehicle inspection process is a joke. The service department does not answer the phone and doesn't return voicemails either. When you do finally get your car in there to be fixed, they don't actually verify the problem is resolved! This is just my personal experience. I am sure others had better. Personally, my recommendation would be to go somewhere else. I had a 2018 Dodge shipped to this location. It arrived 3/28. The person I spoke to from corporate said it should be done in a day or two for the quality check. After a couple of days, I call again, but no one from Knoxville answered. It is corporate again, and they promise me someone from Knoxville will call back by the end of the day. They don't. I call again, and corporate picks up. It is now 4/04. Apparently the car was damaged, and Knoxville never told me. I finally get someone from Knoxville to call me on 4/06 (a manager). At this point, I was a bit flustered that no one told me that the vehicle was damaged, and that now my price has gone up by $400. The manager I spoke with (Clint) said it was a new fee that was added to all TN locations as of 4/03. My car had been in Knoxville since 3/28, and I had ordered it way before that. It didn't make sense that I would be charged that. It seemed very shady to me. He tells me someone will call by the end of day to give me an update on the car. No one does. I call the next day and get corporate again. I call again on 4/10, and no one from Knoxville picks up or returns my calls. Terrible customer service. I've spoken with corporate quite a few times and they have been nice. But some shady stuff from CarMax as a whole and some terrible customer service from Knoxville location. read more

So I call the next day for an update and I am told that my reservation has been cancelled but no one can tell who or why especially since they took the 99.00 out of my account. The car is awesome. The experience was horrid. If you are a female, do not shop at Carmax in Knoxville. On the very first meeting with the salesman, we let him know that I was looking for a car. However, through the process, they only contacted my husband. Not one call was made to me. When we went in to do a test drive, the salesman only spoke to my husband. I gave him my driver's license and my car insurance and yet he only wanted my husband's information. The salesman told us that we could take the car for a 45 minute test drive, but "Please Dear God do not stay gone 45 minutes!" He then told us EXACTLY where to drive on our test drive. When my husband asked for the 24 hours that Carmax says we can keep the car, the salesman rolled his eyes, huffed and pretended like he was dying. When we got the Buyer's Order, the salesman only had my husband's name on it. My husband corrected it and emailed it back to him with a request to add my name. When we went in to purchase the vehicle, the salesman did not even make eye contact with me. When we started signing papers, my name was not on them. We had to stop the process and get the girl in the office to correct them. (Both of us were on the loan through an outside lender) It was the poorest customer service experience that I have had. I called the Knoxville dealership to tell them, and she said that she would pass my information along to a manager. No one called. Also, the salesman assured us that there were no recalls on the car. 24 hours after purchase we found a recall. DO not come here. I came in two weeks ago and financed a car only to get told that it needed to be brought back two weeks later because they messed up my financial file to the finance company. I brought in 2 recent paystubs so they could prepare the numbers. I am on salary and get paid semi-monthly. Which is a payment twice a month And they marked me down as bi-weekly and said it was my fault for not communicating. Even though they have my pay stubs to compare numbers. They have ran my credit multiples time with out consent, and now I'm in the process of trying to get a down payment back. Which is conveniently a 12 day return policy, the same time the credit bureau grace period is over. I am out of a car and paid for new insurance only for the car to be gone in two weeks. And potentially a down payment, wanted to take them time to post so no one else has to go through this! read more

Just visited the Carmax in Knoxville TN. Really wanted to buy a nice Nissan but the appraisal on my Lincoln came back more than$1500 light of previous trade-in appraisals I have received. When we went back to our car, the sun shield was left open and would not close. We went back in to find the technician who did our appraisal and said when he tested it, it would not close. It was closed when we dropped it off and had every expectation that the car would be returned in it's original condition. When we asked him to do so his reply was "I can't. Its broken". Now I will need to take it to the dealership for repair as it was functioning fine before. What started as a positive car buying experience with an excellent salesman turned out to be a big bust. read more
