It pains me to say almost all of our experience at the Carleton Cannes was a major disappointment. It's particularly disturbing because it was our first time in the south of France and our travel planner had told us service and ambience at this property were "iconic" and "first class."
Sadly, this just was not true. First off, the rooms are not large though the price tag is. We got questioned more than once whether we were actual guests at the hotel despite appropriate attire and were made to feel we were intruding upon the staff when we asked for small things. One time might just be a fluke but several times is indifference - or worse.
The breakfast buffet did contain a great array of food, but the wait staff clearly didn't want to be bothered with mundane tasks such as filling up a coffee cup. Twice i had to get up and ask the staff myself, tempted to apologize for interrupting them. A woman at a table next to me simply got up and left after a few attempts in vain to gain a server's attention.
Even something as simple as shampoo and conditioner in the room were dispensed in enormous metal containers, as if guests couldn't be trusted not to lift them as "souvenirs" upon leaving the hotel. Contrast this with lovely samples of Diptyque 34 Boulevard St. Germaine products we received at our Paris hotel (can't say enough good about that property), and the yuk factor at the Carleton only increased.
After spending a busy day touring from 8:30 am until 4 pm, we came back to our room only to discover it still hadn't been cleaned. We decided to hang out downstairs in an open seating area until - you guessed it - staff asked if we were guests at the hotel. If only a waiter had actually cared to notice us, I would have ordered a drink.
A personal item went missing from my room after cleaning service left one day; only later did i discover upon a quick internet search that others had also experienced "theft" - in one case $5,000 EU. I was lucky; mine was only cosmetics.
Upon check-out, 2 calls to the front desk failed to yield anyone to help us with our bags. At that point, we simply wanted to get out and after all we did have a driver waiting to take us to the airport. So it was easier to lug the suitcases ourselves. Eventually we were met in the hallway by staff who miraculously materialized just as we were about at the front door. No one said goodbye to us. Once again, this was a very unflattering contrast with our beloved Paris hotel where we were warmly (and surprisingly) embraced at check-out and made to promise we would return with the rest of our family (we will)!
We did report back to the hotel about our negative experience and - this totally encapsulates their tone-deaf, self-serving attitude - they were SO sorry that they offered us a free night's stay to be used within 1 year! Haha, okay. Somehow I doubt we'll be taking them up on that.
I don't know what is going on with this hotel, and I have a feeling the wealthiest of guests, minor celebrities and oil barons may fare better than we did. Wearing your best Chanel, LV and Kelly bags every day may not be good enough at the level we're talking about here.
So, for mere mortals, I recommend finding a hotel where they treat you like they actually value you. Leave the Carleton Cannes for Leo and Vittoria and their ilk. You deserve better than this pretentious trophy hotel. read more
