However we thought we would have a go at hardcore bingo and as such ended up at Mecca Bingo at the Springfield Quay. First of all we all had to become members by registering through the website, and then it was a torturous wait until our welcome letters and membership cards were delivered! It was the longest 5 to 7 days of my life! On our first night there we parked in our "members only" parking spaces and entered the hug foyer and sort of hung about wondering what we were supposed to do next. Eventually we tagged along behind a group of blue rinse wonders and copied what they did. they asked for bingo sheets with elaborate names in what sounded like another language and we just said, "Umm same as them please." When we got into the bingo hall itself it was massive with tables which sat groups of four dotted around the bingo caller who was on a huge podium in the centre of the room. It was remarkably high tech with big screens flasging up the numbers as they were called. There was also a bar (thank God) and you can buy pub type snacks like crisps and peanuts. We stood out like sore thumbs and had "newcomers" written all over us. We didin't have a clue what sheet we were supposed to be on and whether we were playing for a line or a house or whatever the other options are! We kept on getting shushed for talking; these ladies take their bingo very seriously! I can understand why though as there was usually hundreds or even thousands of pounds up for grabs during most games, or is it rounds, who knows? It was an interesting experience but out membership has long since been cancelled and we have stuck to the unofficial bingo ever since. We were mega disappointed that no one actually shouted bingo just "HERE!" or "ARRGG!" and the caller didn't do any of the cheesy chat that is the best part of bingo. You know like, "Two little ducks, 22, quack quack." and all that stuff.

I'm not ashamed to admit it (or maybe a little) but I don't mind the odd bingo night with my friends! Long gone are the days of the blue rinse brigade calling the shots in these clubs;it's definitely appealing to a younger audience and I think this club reflects that. Could I go constantly? Nope, I'd be bored to death. But once a month catching up with friends, I have no problem with. I'll let you know if we ever win anything decent..haha! This hall is large and holds a lot of people. The Q Bar is upstairs which is a nice area to sit, have a drink (they don't have the best cocktail menu but all the alcoholic drinks are well priced) and just chat whilst you play. You can also order food in the hall (again, reasonably priced) and I can confirm that it's not half bad...not the best meal you'll ever have but on par with Wetherspoons. So yeah...you play bingo (shock horror!). Actually, the games don't run on that long and there are a lot of intervals which gives my friend and I time to catch up. We go for the social aspect and it works well for a mid week catch up. There are plenty of toilets and everything is clean/tidy. The staff are pretty nice too and happy to help where they can. They try telling the odd joke...and fail miserably. Overall, it's a nice evening out and we always have a giggle!

Some people stay in there all day as they have a cafe which sells breakfast, lunch and evening meals. It is reasonably priced. The bingo games vary in price. Some games can be around £2 but it can cost around £20 per evening. The rewards can be good though. They were offering £1,000,000 recently, but this has been shelved. The national game is still played every night and the prize for winning this can be up to £100,000 per night. They have slot machines and mini bingo games available so you can gamble from morning to night in here. Parking facilities are good as are the public transport links.

It is to take the standard bingo, home of two fat ladies and lots of old ladies, and remarket it for young people. I'm serious. Most young, trendy folk like me (hrm) wouldn't consider the bingo as a night out in a million years. But after paying a trip to this Gala branch with a few of my friends, I discovered it is actually loads of fun. These old people are not daft. There is a lot of money to be made. And it's not as easy as it looks either. Despite the average age of the punters, the numbers are called out really quickly so even a quick, nimble mind like mine had to concentrate hard in order to keep up (double hrm). I would ditch the patterned carpet, plastic tables and nasty canteen with a menu that simply comprises of burger and chips and swap it for stylish decor, cocktails and top chefs who would dish up tasty snacks including chicken "bingo" wings (if the entrepreneur thing doesn't work out I am going to pursue a career in stand up comedy.) I've always been a little apprehensive about entering the doors of the Opry as I used to work round the corner from it and I know exactly what the other bars are like round there. Well The Old Toll Bar's alright during the day/early evening/during the week. Anyhoo I had seen the posters for line dancing outside and I do love trying new dance styles, bollywood my favourite at the moment, but line dancing. Hmmm?! I think you know it's gonna be for the older person as it's let say a more gentle kind of dance and you're stuck in a line. Well you may ask how on earth did I end up here with my angst of line dancing? My mate had invited me to see a band called the Bad Bad Men and bad in the slightest they were not I'll have you know. As soon as I walked into the Opry I thought I had walked into a Texas social club airport. It's such a strange layout of seats that remind me of an airport but with other seating that reminds me of a local social club. Well there was plenty of rootin tootin guys and gals dressed to impress with the whole country and western thing happening but you don't get the feeling of "darn I should have made the effort and slipped on my spurs and holster before I left the house". Although with the gun slinging classes that were advertised along with line dancing and bands made it tempting to get the old holster out, that's if I had one of course, well I do but it's pink and plastic. That count?! It was a great night out with great friends and bands, one from Canada called Silver Creek and a lassie from out that way too called Sarah McClurg. I had a super night and I wasn't even drinking as I had the car. Drinks were very very reasonable priced, guess who's leaving the car next time?! I'm definitely up for a proper night out here as they even have a bit upstairs that sells food. Oh yeah!!!!! Sold!

Grab your rootin tootin ten gallon hat, yur bestest gal, saddle up your finest steed and mosey on down to the finest waterin' hole this side of the Mc Graw's Gulch!!! Confused, you will be. This place is an institution. A place where those of the cowboy shirt/boot/hat/holster(yes you heard, holster) wearing minority of Glasgow can frequent and square dance the night away with there dearly beloved, latest squeeze or even their posse of mean hombres. An institution in Glasgow running for over 30 years, the Opry offers the afore mentioned cowboys and cowgirls the chance to dance their chaps off in a welcoming, if slightly community/bingo hall esque setting. Along side the obligatory line dancing sessions, there trots a wild west "shoot out" competition with regular gun slingers shooting it out for the weekly kudos. Add to this a healthy shot of live music, mixed crowds, eclectic outfits ('coon skin hats, floral shirts, chaps, holsters, ten gallon hats, horses...actually no), roomy dance floor to strut your stuff and a bar with stupidly reasonable prices and you have yourself the mixin for a wild, wild night. Ok, so the area around the place isn't the most welcoming. When arriving it feels a bit like stepping into the Alamo, which kind of adds to the feel of the place to be honest, but once you get in and get into it, its a fine, fine night.

You have the option to choose paper books or electronic books. The electronic machines here do not have the auto dab function which is kinda annoying. The hall inside is kind of dated and could be doing with a refurb but still it was pretty busy for a Tuesday night with decent money up for grabs. A star lost for the horrible flat pepsi that was served from the bar. There is a full food menu to choose from too with pretty decent choices although i didnt see too many food orders going through. I would visit again purely because it is so handy for my house but i think i am a mecca bingo buddy through and through :)

Another bingo review..what is wrong with me?!!…read more My friend and I decided to pop along to the Gala to see what it was like and I honestly can't say that I'll be back in a hurry. It's dated and unlike others, we were the youngest there by a country mile! The juice was beyond flat too and meh, it needs a complete overhaul and image change. Good sized car park but if you can't drive and don't live in the local area, it's a nightmare to get home from. Not worth the effort. Not impressed at all. I'll be hanging up my bingo hat for a while!
