Carlsbad Village is a great place to walk, shop, and dine. It's quaint, clean, and pedestrian-friendly, with a train station and plenty of crosswalks. The dining scene offers a wide range of options, and some recent favorites include: * Blue Ocean Robata & Sushi Bar * French Corner Cafe * Poki Poki Boba & Brewski * Pop Pie Co. * Shoots Fish and Beer Just across the street is the beautiful Frazee Beach, one of several state beaches in Carlsbad. It features some wide sandy stretches and a great promenade that extends to Tamarack beach. What keeps the village from a 5-star rating? Carlsbad Village's real advantage is its proximity to the beach. There are restaurants--mostly Italian--and a few bars, but there is no grocery store. If you are visiting, be prepared to eat out for every meal. On top of that, multiple streets are under construction. We would have given this place a higher rating if it weren't for the out-of-control dog situation, especially on the beach. We stayed at a beachfront hotel. We LOVE pets, but this beach is not an appropriate place for them. Many residents allow their dogs to pee and poop in the sand and do not clean it up. We even had dogs urinate in our food. The smell of dog urine and poop was overwhelming and disgusting. Hotel staff told us they regularly deal with dogs peeing on chairs and other guest belongings. During our stay, we met a mother whose todler was knocked down by a dog, as well as two people who were bitten by dogs on the beach. This is also a serious health issue, as dog urine contains bacteria that can contaminate the beach and cause viruses for beachgoers. Every day, we saw locals allowing their dogs to do whatever they wanted--peeing, pooping, and bothering people--with no accountability. There are plenty of designated dog parks in Carlsbad, so there is no excuse for this behavior. We have visited beaches all over North County, and Carlsbad is the one we will now avoid. It is not worth paying a premium price only to deal with this level of frustration. Children should feel safe at the beach, and in Carlsbad, they simply don't. read more

Carlsbad Village is classified as the heart of downtown Carlsbad. When in Carlsbad Village you will be treated to a host of shops, bars and restaurants. Plus hotels are located throughout this area. Good to venture to this area as plenty of independent places to support. Plus to aid in your enjoyment there are plenty of parking spots on the streets and in parking lots. Note during events and peak season, this area gets very busy and parking can be challenging. Best to park outside the heart of the city and walk in. read more

Carlsbad Village is such a fun place to visit for anyone who loves to shop, dine, be entertained, and people watch. My most memorable time was when I participated in the Carlsbad 5000: World's Fastest 5K several years ago. I didn't run it... I walked it. It took place in the heart of Carlsbad Village. Lots of participants. Beautiful weather. So much fun! Most recently, I was here once again with my eldest daughter for the weekend. We were staying in Days Inn Carlsbad just a few blocks away and spent one full day at the village. We got donuts from The Goods, ate ramen at Gonzo Ramen, got a can of carbonated soda from Gonzo Store, entertained a poke bowl at Hooked on Poke, had an avocado smoothie from Presotea (they are partners with Hooked on Poke), picked up a carmel popcorn + strawberry lemonade combo from Always Popping, shared a regular cup of yummy amarena ice cream at GelatoLove, and scooped a spoonful of strawberry custard in a cup from Strawberry Shack. What a spectacular afternoon enjoying great eats, drinks, and desserts! We loved it!! There are public parking lots or street parking available. Please read the signs to make sure you're parking during designated times. Public restrooms are available. What a nice surprise... there's a train that passes through the Carlsbad Village. This place is a cute place to walk around and look at shops but most of it is pricey and very underwhelming for my husband and son. We spent almost two hours walking around shopping and didn't buy anything. This is a great place to go if you aren't on a tight budget and want to get souvenirs. There are a few places to eat and snack and get a treat as well as a little place for kids to run around a bit. read more

It contains a mind-blowing 97 shops, 210 places to eat, and over 200 more miscellaneous businesses and offices. It's a gorgeous two-level complex that's all interconnected by a series of staircases and promenades, and you can literally spend hours just strolling around and taking in all the sights. We picked up some souvenirs at Back to Cali, and ate and drank at the Naked Café, Le Papagayo, Norte, Handel's Ice Cream, Cold Stone Creamery, Better Buzz Coffee, Gregorio's Italian Restaurant, the Strawberry Shack, the Carlsbad Bakery, the Carlsbad Farmer's Market and the Shorehouse Kitchen. We were entertained by live music from the big band/Manhattan Transfer sound of Gin 'n Tonix and thoroughly enjoyed the mural art that seemed to populate every storefront in the village. Everything I mentioned (and much more) is easily walkable and a real pleasure to see. We visited every day we were in Carlsbad and enjoyed every visit. read more

Carlsbad Village is a great place to spend an afternoon at. We usually make a day of it grabbing a nice lunch, browsing the stores and walking along the beach trail. We like to try different restaurants each time we visit and there are so many choices. Carlsbad Village is a large village spanning a few blocks. There are so many great places to eat and shop around here. Plus it's so close to the beach. If you stay at the Springhill Suites or Best Western, you can easily walk here. I recommend Gonzo Ramen and The Goods. On Wednesday nights they have a farmers market. It is packed and there are plenty of vendors. I suggest getting here early! read more

there's a strong sense of community in the Village section of old Carlsbad that's survived and even flourished even under the stewardship of the best politician money can buy: Matt Hall. nothing brings people together like a crooked mayor. might have helped if he'd remembered the bread and circuses part of the equation. his multiple backdoor stunts to circumvent the California Coastal Commission (established by voter initiative in 1972 (Proposition 20) and later made permanent by the legislature when they passed the California Coastal Act of 1976) to manage coastal development AND the reaffirmed will of the people (evidenced by defeat of Prop A a few years ago) even after an LA developer poured millions (not including hefty campaign contributions to Hall and the other commissioners who voted to build a super mall at the Batiquitos Lagoon) are epic. even that series of setbacks didn't stop him from bending the rules to develop his own properties. I remember when Carlsbad Village Drive was Elm Street and to preserve the village feel, no buildings over two stories were allowed. now under the pretense of some low income units being included (along with MORE campaign contributions), lots of three-story projects got his blessing. you know who's getting approved for "low income" housing? family of the developers and the fine folks in city government who voted to approve the projects. his greedy grab of "parking fees" (requiring an additional $10,000 per guesstimated parking spot required, ten spot minimum, for new business licenses) set back village development more than decade. enjoy eating in the amazing new restaurants in South O? if you live in Carlsbad, you can thank Matt Hall for the drive. thanks. Wonderful downtown village with plenty of restaurants, shops, coffee shops, bars, ice cream shops, theatres, and wineries.

This area of Carlsbad is the place for locals and tourists to hang out, get a coffee, a pastry, a drink, a meal. You can also find excellent boutiques selling artwork, beachwear, souvenirs, etc. There are great places to eat from Himalayan and Indian food to Crepes and Mexican fare.... Many events happen around here like the Farmer's Markets on Wednesdays and the Village Faire Open Markets twice a year (the upcoming one on Sunday Nov 5th, where over 900 vendors sell crafts and stuff to more than 100,000 visitors). Just a beautiful section of the city to relax and enjoy...steps from the beach and plenty of free parking around. read more

This downtown Carlsbad area offers a varitey of shops and good eating places. Lots of antique and curio stores and a great place to visit and hang out after a couple of hours at the beach. Plenty of street parking available. Sometimes there are art demonstrations and live musical performances in this area. You can also cruise the coast in style during the summer time by renting their Carlsbad Moke Rental. These are electric street-legal vehicles that you can drive around and explore more of Carlsbad Village. read more

We were thinking of doing a home in Carlsbad village and we're not. Carlsbad needs to- - get new lifeguards who are competent and care - Have your lifeguards get medical kits - not have dogs on the beach or at least have the local dog owners use leashes. We love animals. It's not always safe, especially for children There was a really friendly woman who was helping us out with places to go. She recently moved to the neighborhood. We were on the beach in the morning with her. it was empty, not that many people on the beach- unfortunately, she got attacked by a dog. Her hands were swollen, bleeding. The dog also chewed up her shoes. The dog owner who is a local, he did not even apologize and instead told the woman that she shouldn't be on the beach if she doesn't want to be around dogs. There is not a lifeguard station, but a lifeguard came by in a red truck. She tried to get some antiseptic and he said that they don't carry medical kits. He just went away and said there is nothing he could do. He then drove to a place close to an entrance called Beeche Street. We helped her as much as we could. She left in tears. We observed that same lifeguard hanging out out with his friends in that place for at least two hours. I went over just to see. I think the lifeguard's name is Ryan. He is bald with a mustache. He said he was on duty for the whole day. We have been on beaches all over. We have never seen such an uncaring attitude from a lifeguard. He could have helped her, texted another lifeguard to get some antiseptic or something. Another day while on the beach in Carlsbad, a dog peed on our towel and in our food. It turns out that the dog owner was a lifeguard. He was laughing about it; he did not apologize. We also stepped in dog poop several times while taking walks on the beach. We won't be returning to Carlsbad and will definitely not be getting a home there. If lifeguards take no responsibility and do not care, it's a bad sign of a lack of community and caring in Carlsbad. read more

Clean and well-maintained. Good for dogs, family, and groups. You could hear live music coming from some of the bars and restaurants. Saw a wine tasting spot on the way to the beach. Have I seriously not reviewed the Village yet? This is a cute "downtown" area in Carlsbad. There are a few gems and some crappy tourist stuff so there is a range. I LOVE sleeping tiger coffee which is at the north west corner of the square. The mermaid store is also surprisingly charming. There are a number of good (overpriced perhaps) restaurants and some events you can go to as well. It's also blocks from the coast so you can walk before or after a meal. There's a little something for everyone and I find locals here as well as out of towners. Can't say I don't steer clear in the thick of summer though. Definitely check it out if you're in Carlsbad. Maybe grab a coffee and walk the whole area. read more

Big Faire today over 800 vendors! Streets are closed for this and it's only once a year! Yes we drove 85 miles but it's just off Coast Hwy in Carlsbad Village. Beautiful weather. The beach just blocks away! Great food! Good for the kids also. A lot of walking so 3 1/2hrs is about enough time to see it all. We will return next year as this is a must! Wonderful items to buy as well as clothing. A play area for the kids with rides. The only down side is parking you just have to keep looking! Unless you want to pay spots will turn up! read more

Fantastic spot! Carlsbad like many beach communities in California all have their own unique vibe! The Village seems to always be on revive and continues to impress! The Village is my preferred destination for taking walks, trying new food and enjoying time in the ocean! So fortunate to live nearby for years and visit often! We were married here in 2014 with a beach wedding I'll cherish always! In the past couple years, especially during the pandemic and through 2021, we've noticed many more tourists and people flock here from all over, near and afar to explore and enjoy all the newest amenities! The continuous enhancements are brining on the communities vitality and it shows! Many new restaurants and some that have been here years now is what makes this place an ideal spot of fun discoveries, relaxing to a comfortable vacation or weekend getaway! You have beaches, scenery, over the top food options, all within a small proximity. Major developments in hotels cannot be missed here, there are a couple of large projects that were finally completed late last year so more people can come enjoy and stay awhile! Bring your pooch too, you will discover so many people bring the extended family of pets as most places include dog friendly patios. Just another reason I love the Village, I get to say hi to all the adorable dogs!! If you're a foody enthusiast, you can visit Yelp or Trip Advisor to find what suits your palate or discover something different to try, with a wide spread of cultural variety. Some of the stand out specialties are: The Chocolate Bar, The Goods - decadent donuts, Topes - delicious home-cooked organic/vegan varieties - expect long lines and short hours - but do wait - it's worth it and if you see the line out the door it normally goes by within 20+minutes. Also, Choice Juicery - premium juices and for vegans and non-vegans they offer some unique options and delicious made-to-order food selections, Humble Olive Oil - wow! you've never tasted pure olive oil or seasoned for that matter! Blvd of Italian food restaurants- there are a few premium options, most on State St and surrounding along the front beach stretch ie Vigilucci's. There are a few Mexican style restaurants within Carlsbad Village - expect an overall good experience with my favorite - Barrio or Las Olas! If you love Las Olas, there is another location literally across from the beach, right before you get to Leucadia. (take the beach front road - 101 from the Village to Leucadia...about 20m drive). There are many more mid to high-end places....Pollo Maria, Shorehouse Kitchen Le Papagayo - FABULOUS!, Swami's Cafe - Delicious options!, Senor Grubby's - Tacos, Tacos...Burritos, Nachos..., The Compass - Fantastic!, Barrel Republic, Dini's Bistro - Great food and hangout from across the beach, 264 Fresco - sit outside in their high-rise tower, Pizza Port, and Crack Shack!!! The Village puts together small street fairs just about every month offering organic goods, vegetables, fruits, clothing, jewelry, many cool options for those looking for something cool to bring back home from their visit here. If you plan to venture outside of Carlsbad, you will be met with even more amenities, all found on Yelp if you research. Than you can drive all around, outside Carlsbad and still continue to enjoy the variety of options i.e. the Flower Fields (Off Cannon Road - near Lego Land), Swamis - Visit their Garden for peace and quiet, Encinitas, Mission Bay, Del Mar where you'll find "Dog Beach", La Jolla, Coronado - the farthest end of San Diego (about an hour's drive South). If you like to have a quiet moment or peaceful walk, you can come to the backside of the Flower Fields on Armada Dr. (about 10-15m from Carlsbad Village) and walk the entire length of this stretch that oversees the entire Flower Fields. We do this just about every weekend! Depending on when you visit here, you'll either see the pre-harvest season - dirt field canvas, partial bloom and/or full bloom that begins around early February through May-ish. Not a bad spot to catch a stellar pre-dawn photo! The American Flag of flowers displayed on the far side of the Flower Fields is a cool feature to see from a distance when driving along Palomar Airport Road (usually gone around June/July until the following year). Can go on and on, but if you are planning a trip to Carlsbad Village, check out Trip Advisor and Yelp as both these platforms have quality reviews of all the places and events that exist here! This is such a good little village. There's a distinct personality about this area that's memorable. The Amtrak runs through the village and it's cool to see the fast trains roar by behind the barrier arms. We've eaten at a variety of restaurants in this area - today we visited Cafe Topes. We're kinda noticing that not a lot of restaurants offer a/c though. And there were alot of flies at Topes (not sure if it's due to his muggy weather). The Village Faire is a cute center to visit as well. It's a bit more touristy but still worth a visit if you're in the area. They also have a private parking lot. Coyote Restaurant inside this center also has live music AND has a/c inside the restaurant. Don't forget to check out the life size chess board and pieces inside this center. Carlsbad Village also has a cool 4 way crosswalk that has speaking capabilities! A nice automated voice directs you to cross this 4 way crosswalk when the light turns green for pedestrians. I don't know how I never went here when I lived in SoCal. So beautiful and charming, and manages to have plenty of shopping and eating options without being touristy, you know? Truly a treat. So cute and great beach access. For someone that closes their eyes and thinks of the Huntington Beach pier when you mention shopping on the beach, this is what I always wanted going to the beach to be. The shops remind me of old towne Orange and the fact that you have excellent craft breweries is just next level. The best of both worlds and something for everybody. Carlsbad village is such a cute town. They have amazing stores and all of the employees working in the different stores and restaurants were super friendly. There were art stores and lots of different types of shops and boutiques to walk around. At night the area looks really cute with the street lights and so forth. The first Monday of the month, I'm in this area (my massage therapist is down here!), and I'm surprised I haven't written a review yet. I love it! I consider the Village everywhere from the coast to close to the 5 freeway, from the Succulent Cafe all the way to the park on State Street. There's something for everyone- bars, donut shops, restaurants, shopping, craft coffee, breakfast joints, a "juicery", record shop, and.... the beach! It gets super crowded, so if I'm not parked in the Village Faire lot, I'm usually at the transit center. I also avoid this area at night, especially during the summer when there's lots of tourists. There's homeless in the area but I've never gotten harassed or yelled at like in downtown Oceanside (some dude thought I didn't understand English and went off on me about being Korean and cheap. I sat and sipped my coffee and let him finish before the "I grew up in Gardena and worked in South Central" ghetto side of me came out). Overall, I highly recommend checking this area out, tourist or not. Great place to come OFF season, during summer time I skip it for less touristy spots. During off season I can find parking. You can also hop the coaster if you live coastal. This is the go to place if you want to spend a day shopping drinking or laying around at the beach because you can do all of it here! I love how it is set up, and how the layout always has me finding new stores to explore or places to eat (and yelp) The antique stores that spill into each other could be an entire afternoon of treasure hunting. Is it family friendly? Yes, but most likely you will find the older crowd by day, party by night. read more
