My favourite thing to get is a beef burger meal, always served with juicy chips and aioli sauce to dip them into. They make it fresh each time, but take no more than 15 minutes, even during peak time. The staff are friendly and accommodating, and tend to remember your order if you frequent them as I do! The vibe of the place is slightly rustic and not at all to be compared with Mac Donalds, so don't even try! Their pizzas also surpass some of the franchises, so be sure to pop in and dig in.

It's a fairly new establishment in the area, but it's become a regular hangout for a few beers and very good food. You definitely feel the '80's vibe when you're there, and its always nice to see a little appreciation for that era. Their pizzas are delicious, particularly 'Rangi's Hangi' and 'Larry the Lamb'. They do a very nice caesar salad and my favourite main has to be the crispy chicken burger with aioli and melted brie- one of the best restaurant burgers I've had. They've got a good range of ciders and do a few cocktails to quench your thirst. They also serve most of their drinks in 600mL milk bottles, which is a really cool touch. I'd have to say that Nineteen Eighty One is best known for their fortnightly Wednesday quiz nights. The place gets packed and its always a good laugh- there's even a prize for the team that comes second to last.

This same feeling of built up excitement was felt when I found out the renowned Murder Burger was opening down the road from home. Alas, rather than finding this years top toy, it felt like I had been left holding a piece of fruit and half the mince pie which Santa left behind. First off, let me start by saying the service was fine, welcomed by smiling (nervous) staff, who welcomed us and sent us off with a fond farewell. Now, the food. The steak fries were good but the burgers, these "Super Gourmet" burgers weren't all that super. I had the Double beef and wild boar bacon burger, whilst Mrs. D had the scotch fillet steak burger. The steak burger was full of sinew and lacked that quality element...taste! Despite the epic size of my double patty and bacon burger, I've had tastier whoppers. You have to wonder if the management did their homework, opening below a very popular foodcourt, which boasts great food and good value. They have a lot of work to do to pull in local Manukau punters, especially with Ponsonby prices!

The place is bright and colorful, simple menu and what looked like good sandwiches. They also had drinks to go and fountain sodas. Unlike most restaurants in NZ, there wasn't water on the counter so I bought a bottle; they didn't tell me you could get it for free behind the counter. I ordered what sounded like a simple burger and some fries. I loved the packaging; cardboard wrapper that opened to hold it together. The beef quality was just okay; there was way too much sauce and mayo. The fries were too salty so I couldn't finish them. I had much better burgers later on my trip, this one isn't really worth the visit.

Black dog was tucked away beside the Empire Tavern. Look for the wooden sign with the paw print. Our trio had the Beef Smash Burger, the Brisket burger and the Chicken Sandwich. You can add fries and a beer for $11NZD. There was only one beer available (a hazy IPA which was *mwah* so good!) the fries were more of a Dutch cut than shoestring, but they were also very very good! The pickle chips were sweet pickles; also tasty. It's a small place, with three tables and a long counter. There is an interior connection to the tavern next door. Service was great. There seemed to be two people working this lunch. Front of house takes orders, pours beers and grills the burgers, and operates the fryer. Back of house does the dishes and restocks. Efficient and delicious. If time allows or if we ever come back, I'll be back.
