Part three. Appetizers of guacamole and queso. Both are quite good. The guacamole looks bare of additions but is roundly flavored with a bit of heat and sufficient garlic. Sliced tomatoes on top. Cheese slurry. Again, not the most festive construction but, quite satisfying. Wife ordered the fajita for one, beef and shrimp. A load of pleasure. Beef is deep and rich. Good spice. The butterfly shrimp ate medium large. Spice and char. A fine entree. A pic is attached. I ordered the chicken enchilada verde. Sauce is eerie green but the flavor is citrus like pop of tomatillos. Chicken is shredded and spent som time in a flavorful, chili tomato bath. Extra rich. Story about no interior enchilada shot. Over all, this eatery has shown an improvement over our last visit. Still worth it. Part two. No more updates unless some significant changes. Sticking to 4 stars for this good, general purpose Tex-Mex eatery. Trio of singers earlier. Prior review I'll be darn. Very good Tax-Mex food. Mine was chicken enchilada verde. Rich, complex. The verde sauce is exceptionally flavorful. Crisp citrus and plenty of tomatillo identity. Subtle but welcome "burn" carrying a pleasant layer of garlic. Chicken was shredded very fine, drenched in a red sauce of piquant character which supported the pollo and enhanced the flavor. Nice combination of tastes. Beans and rice. What can you say? Well, both were provided identity. Rice is red, cumin up front. Moist and toothsome. The frijoles are rather smooth but with a tight viscosity. As the little girl said..."just right." Undercurrent of umami, these beans were not bashful. I added one tamale on the side. What a splendid accompaniment. Rich masa and as smooth as silk. Carnitas also in a similar piquant sauce. The tamale is fall-on-the-floor, astonishingly good. So very pleased I added it to my plate. I like Carlito's. This is super-duper Tex-Mex. btw, it has been MORE than ten years since our last visit. This joint has really improved. read more

I visit and eat at a lot of Mexican restaurants from Orange, TX to Houston, TX. This restaurant is in my top 1%. I was blown away from the smells coming in outside the restaurant. Excellent homemade food, friendly, awesome service and a biggie for me very "Clean". I will be making this location a regular stop. I was impressed with the overall visit. Carlito's seems like the Mexican restaurant of choice in Beaumont. A wide variety of customers were eating lunch on the Tuesday I was there - from business to blue collar, families and large groups. Carlito's serves up the standard Mexican fare, not much different than most other places. I got tacos al carbon and they were greasy and fatty, just like you'd expect. Tortillas were handmade, so that was a nice touch. The sides (rice and charro beans) were flavorful. Carlito's beats the chains anyday. read more

Locally owned and festive atmosphere that feels like Mexico. Tissue paper flowers and paper banners decorated the ceiling of the cramped space. Excellent flavor in dishes. Not what I expected for a fajita plate but it was a full plate with some of the best beans I've had. I was missing the cheese and sour cream I've come to expect with a fajita plate instead of just meat and onions but my husband said it was not listed on the menu and was priced cheaply. My husband and I had differently priced menus for the lunch specials. We were verbally told the wrong price for Margaritas which seemed low in alcohol content. Our waitress was rather old and barely spoke English which may have contributed to misunderstandings. Upon leaving I noticed a 32 gallon, wheeled trash can (rugged outdoor model) with a lid marked "CHIPS". Well, now I can't say I've never eaten food from a trash can... thanks a lot! read more

I got breakfast tacos this morning for my wife's office. The ladies loved them and they came with chips and salsa too! We got bacon/egg, chorizo/egg, and potato/egg. Quaint little place in Beaumont that serves very good breakfast and lunches and it's a firm favorite with the locals. I stopped there for an early breakfast with some work colleagues and I can tell you one thing even though I wasn't hungry, I asked for coffee and it was great. From what I've noticed the other people who ate with me seemed very familiar with their breakfast tacos and it seemed that Carlitos is a neighborhood institution. Visited on a Tuesday and service was good. Restaurant itself has a charming appearance. They also have a large complimentary serving of tortilla chips and salsa which were good I'm (my mother didn't like them). Service was so fast that our table had not even gone through half of our appetizer. HOWEVER when our food arrived my mother and I were disappointed to find that the fajita for two was portioned more like a fajita for one. And to add to the disappointment, half of the plate was filled with onions. The dish was so onion-y that I could not taste any meat. I am a 110 pound female with a small stomach who halved the dish meant for two and did not feel full nor satisfied afterwards. My father however did like his chalupas hence the 3 stars. read more

Deepest regrets... I lived in Beaumont for almost ten years and hoped a visit back would knock the tortilla chip off my shoulder, as this seems to be a popular and well-loved place. As it turns out, I only feel free to write this review knowing my sister-in-law won't read it, as she is a die-hard fan of this place but not a Yelper. Carlito's is about the lowest form of Tex-mex you can find, anywhere. Given the high reviews from other Yelpers, you will have to put my opinion in context, but I stand by it. And to be sure, my idea of "lowest form of Tex-Mex" could easily be someone else's idea of highest form... things get extra-subjective when it comes to comfort food, eh? Sis-in-law proclaims this her favorite salsa, but my dad wonders if there's anything other than tomatoes in the mix (as he tries to pronounce "cilantro"). I stay mum but agree with my old man. Margaritas all around the table - yay! No, wait... FAIL! I'd forgotten these are wine-based drinks so what you get is some low-rent pinot grigio with a spash of sweet-and-sour. More power to you if that satisfies your margarita jones.... Normally I'd give a place like this a place an opportunity to redeem itself with dishes that go beyond the Tex-Mex pandering, but $10+ for tacos al pastor or barbacoa wasn't goiing to woo me away from the lunch specials. So chicken enchilada lunch plate it was. Chilii gravy over mystery meat = completely de rigueur in this milieux! Dad's cihile relleno might threaten to be the most redeeming thing on the menu.... oh, but no... the poblano pepper has stem intact and no seeding...über fail. I love Carlitos. It by far my favorite place to eat Mexican food ever. Sometimes I'll drive in from Houston just to eat there. In fact, anytime I'm in the Beaumont area, it's just about the only place I'll go these days. I'm currently addicted to the Potachos, which surely include crack and magic fairy dust in their recipe. They make my mouth feel like rainbows and sunshine. They're nothing fancy, but whoever came up with them deserves an award. read more

Has potential, needs plenty of improvements, went twice after work was the only one in the restaurant and took 15 minutes to get service. Salsa not authentic, chips are not the best and drink menu is limited to what they have and good luck getting it at a good temperature. So good! I was visiting Beaumont for work and grabbed this for lunch. I had the fish and shrimp platter, it was AMAZING! I had both grilled and it came with a side of rice that was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and a side salad with guacamole (the cherry on top). It was a refreshing and beautifully colored lunch, the shrimp and fish were both grilled to perfection!! It was just so tasty, the shrimp were huge and tasted great with the cocktail sauce. The fish was also a good size and tasted awesome. This plate was seriously so so good, my coworker had the same thing and we could not stop talking about how good it was. A nice and filling lunch for sure. I definitely recommend trying this plate! You will be in awe! read more

Came here after a close friend recommended it as "amazing authentic Mexican food. But....... for the area, this is abysmal. Watery, tasteless margaritas begin your meal followed by equally tasteless salsa. The queso fundido tasted like a nasty processed cheese mess. To be very ineloquent, It was straight up gross. The chips were old and stale as well. The space itself is even a disappointment- I came on a cold rainy night, the interior of the restaurant was even colder and more damp than outside. Not what you want when you sit down somewhere to have a meal. The staff are the only positive thing here, they are all very nice and efficient while serving you. However, this is SE Texas. There is plenty of high quality Mexican food everywhere, I suggest you don't look for it at Carlito's. read more

When I want Mexican in Beaumont, Carlito's is first on my list. The food isn't fussy and neither is the atmosphere. I've had several items on the menu and they've all been delicious. I think there are always a couple of litmus test items on a menu that indicate whether or not you're eating at a 'good/authentic' restaurant. At a Thai place, it's the Pad Thai or the Curry. At a Vietnamese restaurant, it's the Bun Thit Nuong or Cha Gio. At a Mexican place, for me, it's usually the beef enchiladas and the rice and beans. Both of which are very good at Carlito's (especially the rice and beans). They don't taste like an afterthought and are well-seasoned and flavorful. Finally, the portions are generous and the prices are reasonable. read more

Carlitos is a staple in Beaumont Mexican food. Good place to kick back and have a great meal. The staff is super friendly and the bright pink interior makes you feel warm and fuzzy. I always get Tacos Al Carbon with some charro beans. All the joy of a fajita without having to make it yourself. The serve beer and margs, but the margs aren't made with liquor so stick to beer. Lived here most of my life and eaten here at least 3 or 4 dozen times. Pretty sure we were served chips off another table tonight. The basket was mostly crumbs and some of the crumbs had salsa dribbled on them. Picked up a quart of salsa to go with tamales at Thanksgiving. They charged $11 for the salsa and it was like trying to pull teeth from an alligator to get more than a very small bag of chips to go with it. I love finding great hole in the wall joints while on business trips. This spot is definitely one of those awesome spots! Carlitos has a full bar, fresh tortilla chips, and the best homemade hot sauce I've had in a long while. The bean and cheese nachos I ordered to "tide me over until dinner" was a heaping pile of chips, beans, perfectly melted cheese and fresh jalapeños. The margarita was strong but not over powering. Carlito's ... It's a great place to get my a TexMex on with soft taco's and rice and beans ... The salsa has a bit of a kick to it, and I can not eat it normally as most do. I don't like pain. I have my own method of enjoying the salsa without all the extra heat. I soak the chips in my salsa bowl until they are softer, and then enjoy them with the meal. Each chip makes two bites to enjoy with your food. This used to be my favorite TexMex place between the cousin's, but now I mostly eat at Elena's due to transportation issues. Yes, this is a beaumont fav, but as many tex-mex restaurants as we have here, this one bites. I went to carlito's some years ago and it was pretty good, but we went there recetly and walked out before we even ordered. The place is dingy and dark, looks extremely old and unkept. The manager was sitting at the bar having a drink while we waited to be seated, finally someone came to seat us at a dirty table. They then proceeded to wipe the dirty table with a dirty towel (even though there were other "clean" tables around). After 3 minutes of looking at the menu and eating the less than worthy "hot sauce", we decided that this was the most expsensive tex-mex restaurant in town (not to mention the worst atmosphere), and that we would go somewhere else. I will never return, there are way to many great tex-mex restaurants in beaumont to let service, prices, and atmoshpere get that far out of control. Sorry I can't comment on the food, but, like I said, there are many great tex-mex places here, so go to one that is clean and has good prices and great salsa. read more
