In April of 2023, I received the unfortunate news that my 11.5 year old, Bruno, had a nasal tumor…read morethat was expanding pretty aggressively. His quality of life was starting to slip slightly and on his bad days or nights, he'd have some pretty significant 'bleeding from the nose' episodes. Once the specialists diagnosed the issue, and told me that it would be be wise to 'make arrangements' for him, I scoured the internet for a compassionate, experienced, person who would come to the house and make his passing as painless and pleasant for him, as possible. I'm so fortunate that I stumbled across Dr. LaVergne. Her compassion and commitment for her job are evident from the moment we first interacted via email and phone. She was willing to move mountains in her own schedule if I said that Bruno was deteriorating rapidly (which fortunately was not the case, so we scheduled 3-4 days out, but her willingness to broach the topic speaks volumes to the kind of person and professional that she is). We set an appointment for May 1 and she gave me ideas on how to spend our last few days together, as well as the types of food that Bruno might enjoy while she put him to sleep. I could share a pretty extensive play-by-play of how the hour went--but I'll spare everyone the details, and maybe save myself a few tissues in the process too! Dr LaVergne is a very special person. If you are at the juncture where you've got to make this very difficult decision, do yourself a favor and choose Dr LaVergne. The days leading up to Bruno's passing were brutal, but I will always look back on his actual passing as such a peaceful, spiritual experience--thanks in large part to Dr LaVergne. Bruno was a special pup--most folks assured me after he passed that he was so lucky, because "you gave him such a great life"--ironically, the opposite was true. I was definitely the lucky one.

I was determined to act as usual so the dogs would not sense anything to upset them, hoping the veterinarian in charge of euthanasia thought the same way. Dr LaVergne met my expectations and beyond. She was so kind and gentle that after greeting her, Sammy and Baron lay down and dozed while we talked. She spent time talking with me and made sure I was ready before proceeding with the medication. In a few minutes, they peacefully stopped breathing. She spent time afterwards also. Nothing felt rushed. I had called a few of the pet "hospice" companies but the appointments are made at a main office somewhere... You will not meet or talk to the vet until they arrive, etc. On the other hand, Dr Lavergne is accessible by phone and text. In addition she has certifications beyond the standard CAETA (Companion Animal Euthanasia Training Academy) which speaks of her dedication and professionalism. I am so grateful to her and Pet Passages Crematory services which I will review separately.

Coming from someone who was paying less at different clinic for care by a team that I thought had the best options/delivery of care for my dog (Moose)... I will tell you two things: 1. The cost is not too high when compared to the thorough care that you receive here. They are great at explaining and providing the best comprehensive treatment. You get what you pay in all corners of healthcare it seems. You pay for the best here. 2. The team is so great. They are kind and extremely hardworking. The out front staff are so welcoming. The staff in the back (including the veterinarians) are kind, thorough, and communicate every step of the way. I have been extremely thankful for them - especially in a time where my dog had recently been misdiagnosed by another facility. They love their patients and I appreciate that so much! Thank you, Hambright!

Banfield Pet Hospital

Banfield Pet Hospital

A Cautionary Experience at Banfield Pet Hospital - Monroe, NC…read more I'm sharing this in hopes of helping other pet owners make more informed decisions regarding their pets' care. We recently lost our beloved 12-year-old Weimaraner less than 42 hours after a routine dental cleaning at Banfield Pet Hospital in Monroe, NC. What was expected to be a standard procedure turned into a devastating tragedy due to complications from anesthesia. Prior to the cleaning, I voiced concerns about the level and duration of anesthesia, especially considering our dog's age. I was assured by the attending veterinarian that only minimal sedation would be used, and that he would be under for the shortest possible time. We picked him up several hours post-procedure and were told that everything had gone smoothly. However, unlike previous cleanings, he was still lethargic and unable to stand on his own even hours later. That night, his breathing became labored. I returned to Banfield first thing the next morning--before the vet had even arrived. When she did, we were taken back, and I had to carry him into the exam room. He was found to have a fever of 102°F and I was immediately advised to take him to a nearby emergency veterinary hospital for more in-depth care. At the emergency facility, it was determined that he had developed aspiration pneumonia due to fluid entering his lungs during sedation. He was in critical condition, and I was told he had a 50/50 chance of survival. He was placed on antibiotics and pain management, throughout the day including Fentanyl. By 6 p.m. that evening, I was contacted by the emergency vet urging me to come say goodbye. My wife and I rushed to be by his side. When we arrived, he was in intensive care, propped up with pillows and on oxygen. We left a shirt with my wife's scent in hopes of comforting him. Tragically, I received a call at 1 a.m. informing us that he had taken a turn for the worse. By the time we arrived--less than 15 minutes later--he had passed away. He had been revived once, but had begun bleeding from his nose and mouth, and could not be saved. From the time he happily jumped into our Jeep for a routine cleaning, to the time he passed away in the ER, less than 42 hours had passed. Please take this as a reminder to ask detailed questions, weigh your options carefully, and consider second opinions--especially when anesthesia is involved. We trusted that our pet would be safe in Banfield's care, but the outcome has left us devastated and full of questions. Pet owners, please be vigilant.
