It was incredibly difficult to tell my dad that I could no longer manage his growing caregiving needs, but Merife and Michelle made the transition easier by assisting me when I shared the news at his home, where he had lived for 60 years. Our first lunch at Villa Fontana was nothing short of serendipitous--my dad was reunited with a former co-worker he hadn't seen in decades! The meal was so delicious that he kept saying "oishi" (Japanese for "delicious"). It truly felt like a home-cooked meal, starting with a cream of potato soup, followed by a bountiful salad with hardboiled eggs, olives, and more. The main course featured chicken parmesan, spaghetti, perfectly prepared vegetables, and a berry pie à la mode for dessert. My dad's room is bright and cheerful, overlooking a gorgeous courtyard. It was recently remodeled with new carpet and granite countertops, making it feel fresh and inviting. To help ease his transition, Merife arranged 24/7 caregiving services from Harmony for the first three days--an unexpected but deeply appreciated gesture. Each caregiver was kind, attentive, and communicative with me, which made all the difference. Just 3 days after moving in, my dad had a small accident during the night, falling on the bathroom floor. Thankfully, he wasn't harmed, and the staff immediately provided me with pictures to reassure me that he was okay. Their attentiveness and quick response gave me so much peace of mind. Perhaps the biggest change has been in my dad's daily routine. Before moving in, he spent his days watching TV from morning until night. Now, he participates in group morning exercises, and when I asked what he liked the most about Villa Fontana, he replied, Bingo! He also loves that he can enjoy ice cream every day--a small but meaningful joy. The entire staff at Villa Fontana has been incredibly friendly and kind. In addition to Merife and Michelle, I want to give a special shoutout to Jefferson, who always greets me at the front desk with a smile, as well as Allyssa, Maryann (the activity director), Maryann (the med tech), Manny, Marycris, and Roselily. I know I'm still learning everyone's names, so my apologies if I've left anyone out! Villa Fontana has truly exceeded my expectations, and I'm so grateful my dad is in such a caring and supportive environment. However, I find it very unsafe to not have personnel on site monitoring their movements in the shopping plaza. I just encountered a resident who forgot where she needed to meet for pickup. I give credit to how quickly they arrived, but even the man who answered the phone seemed rude and lacked compassion. I worry because the Almaden plaza usually draws homeless as well as thieves. God forbid they lose their memory at the wrong time. I hope this is an issue with rapid resolve for the sake of others' elderly loved ones.

My brother and I had looked at a number of possible assisted living facilities and Golden Heritage was my first choice. It is relatively close by to where I live and work, has an Asian staff with many speaking Mandarin (as well as I believe Catonese). There are also some Japanese and possibly some Korean residents as well. We had also considered Aegis Gardens in Fremont, but it was further away and higher cost. The place is independently owned and run by a very nice family with experience in running health care facilities. The place also felt less "corporate." The facilities were converted from a "European" style hotel - with each of the resident floors having a big common space - so it doesn't look like a typical assisted living facility or hotel. The place is clean and the staff is friendly. It took a few months for my mom to adjust living there, but she's come to enjoy living there. My mom enjoys the activities including simple daily exercises, some crafts, weekly outings to pick up small groceries (like fruit for small fridge in room) and household items, and bingo. And, often on the weekends there are small performances by local groups like youth or senior church groups I think. There is free wifi and my mom regularly streams videos from her iPad which I understand is common. Having just broken her hip my mom started off in the assisted living floor of Golden Heritage, but a few months after transitioned to an independent living floor which helped keep the costs down. Despite being in independent living they do check in on her and have called my brother or I when they have noticed problems such as falls or strange behavior; we monitored more carefully and eventually had a medical issue taken care of. It definitely gives me piece of mind knowing that she's being watched over. All in all I'm very satisfied with Golden Heritage. I think if you're looking into senior facilities for you elderly loved one you should definitely check out multiple places as they will each feel a little different to you. I wouldn't state that Golden Heritage is for everyone, but it's been working very well for my mom.

I came to stay here after I had a total knee replacement surgery. I was in a lot of pain. The staff was very kind despite the fact that there were oftentimes overworked because the ratio of staff to patients probably not quite to par. I got PT and OT almost every day, which was great. I was very grateful that they catered to my dietary needs. They even checked up on me after I'd gone home. My only issues I had, had to do with the medication I was on. When I first got there by transport I was due for my pain medication and they didn't have any of my prescribed medication. They told me they would be able to get me some within a half hour of my arrival. That didn't happen. I had to wait hours and I was in agony. Also, one time they ran out of it so they gave me another pain medicine which was stronger. I had to take this three times because the prescribed medicine still never came in. Also, it's great that they offer to wash your clothes (as long as they're labeled). The problem is, you don't always get them back. Their system could use some improvement. I asked about my clothing several times, but they didn't do anything about it, likely because the people I asked were way too busy. On the day I was leaving, my son and I had to go to the laundry room and look for them ourselves. They were spread out all over the place in the lost and found container. I'm not sure if I got everything. If I hadn't been in such pain when they gave me the inventory list when I first arrived I probably could have made a list of what I had come in with. It was in with the packet they gave me and was not explained to me then or later that I recall. Important...write a list of everything you bring. There's no way that one of the aids would have been able to find all my stuff that my son and I found scattered on that last day. Yes, they have room for improvement. No one's perfect. Overall, my experience was great so I'm still giving them five stars.

I was able to accomplish that in a brief time due to the excellenr program they established and carried out. EVERYONE was professional, caring and pleasant. We finally chose the Carlton because the facilities and rooms were lovely but most importantly because the people who work there were warm and loving. Mom lived at the Carlton for nine years. At the time she moved in, mom was active and able to participate in the activities, trips, and social life. Then as time went on and she needed more care, Carlton was there to help us navigate what she needed and design her accommodations to fit her needs. I can not emphasize how wonderful they were in custom crafting a plan to meet her needs and in implementing that plan with caring and kind individuals. If I were making this choice again, I would choose Carlton in a heartbeat. This stage of life is difficult and having people who are competent and care makes it manageable.

Additionally, the Forum is a non-profit benefit corp and is run somewhat like an HOA where the owners/residents have the ability to substantially influence overall policy and items important to them (e.g. food, entertainment, services, etc.). One key difference from a normal HOA is that the owners have the time and desire to make this model work as it requires participation to do so. * The naturally beautiful setting of Rancho San Antonio that surrounds the Forum - While not everyone takes advantage of all the hiking trails, just being in nature provides a relaxing, healthy setting. This is quite different from some of the senior centers that are in more urban settings. * Health facilities, library, ample activity spaces, planned activities (movies, presentations, etc,) and excursions (off site), many grassroots activity groups...uhh a wood shop? keep things more interesting while the services free residents up from the daily challenges (cooking, cleaning, etc.) and give them more time to enjoy. * Full continuum of care - You start of in independent living in a condo unit or stand-alone villa. Should your health needs and ability to live independently change, they have skilled nursing and assisted living facilities right there as well as a new memory care facility (on a fee for service basis after you sell your independent living unit). * Very pet friendly with many folk owning dogs, cats, other critters and visiting pets welcome. * Resident happiness - Perhaps the most important gauge is that I'm still surprised at the general level of satisfaction I sense from the residents ... and I visit pretty regularly. While she was very reluctant to move, her comment about Sunny View was that it felt more like a home than an institution. Her initial instinct has proved to be spot on. Unlike some of the other places they visited, they have always been treated as individuals deserving of understanding and compassion. Our family was pleasantly surprised at how quickly the staff responded to the needs of my parents as they made the very difficult transition of moving from their home of 45 years to a two bedroom apartment (villa). All the different areas (marketing, maintenance, housekeeping, food services, nursing staff) went way beyond what was expected to help them settle in and become part of the community. We even had some unexpected challenges that the staff addressed with kindness and much patience. In addition, the staff seem to communicate well with each other. While the grounds are beautiful (mature trees and multiple garden areas) and there are some new features including an aviary in the Assisted Living area, it is the people that make the difference.
