My boyfriend and I wanted to try something new and that's how we ended up ordering takeout at Caribbean Heritage. We were absolutely delighted with our choice! We ordered 4 dumplings, the jerk chicken with cabbage and plantains and also the oxtail with rice and peas. We also got a side order of the callaloo. My boyfriend said the owners were really nice when he arrived and hoped we liked the food. The fried dumplings were soooooooo good!! It's literally just a fried ball of dough with a hint of sweetness. I loved how buttery it tasted and how crispy it was on the outside but doughy and soft on the inside. This is not a fault of the restaurant at all, but I didn't know how to store it so I fridged the leftovers and microwaved the dough the next morning. Bad idea, it turned rock hard. So maybe leave the leftovers outside and bake? Our favorite entree was the jerk chicken. The chicken was so moist and tender. The jerk spice was soooo flavorful and spicy and just sooo yummies! The plantains were just as good. They were sweet and soft, cooked to perfection. Wish we got another side of the plantains. The cabbage to me was less flavorful but my bf still loved the softness of the veggies and it balanced out the chicken! The oxtails were pretty solid. It's definitely more on the flatter savory side rather than a punch your face flavor. The meat is moist and you get plenty for the portion. I really liked combining it with the rice and peas and that created a very balanced and meat filled dish. The callaloo is also delish! It had the subtle taste of spinach but a more spicy flavor profile because of the fresh peppers! Came into town for a day with my boyfriend and found this place. After reading the reviews I came right in. So glad we did! The hospitality was obvious from the moment we entered. I planned on ordering the whole snapper but after being presented with the special of the day which was a honey salmon - I decided on that instead. My boyfriend had the jerk chicken entree. We ordered our entrees. But now get this! We wanted to sample damn near everything else lol. Guess what? The cook herself came out!!!! And when our food came so did the samples! Delicious! Wish I had pics of the food, but husband and I devoured! Authentic back-home flavors from the islands! Plus if you're Brooklyn raised like myself, you know true West Indian food. Ordered the whole snapper fish for take out because of the quarantine. This is first time ordering from this restaurant and I will gladly come again. Very tasty and the lady we spoke with (I believe it was Lorna?) was very polite! She answered all of our questions about the food since we've never ordered from them and was helpful in suggesting which would be the best option for the cook on the snapper. I came back to Rochester on an urgent family matter. In my down time, I hit up old favorite food spots and explored new ones. Upon walking into Caribbean Heritage I was immediately hit with a pleasant vibe. The decor and seating was much more then your average hole-the-wall joint for tasty food. I sat at the bar to look at the menu for my take out order. I was greeted by Jerome, the warm hearted, friendly co-owner of the restaurant. He patiently took my order as I called my Aunty and read the menu for her to order. As I waited for my food I used their restroom and was happy to see the hotel level of clean they kept it in. Returning to the bar Jerome showed me what I can describe as their "party room" that's available to be rented out. It reminded my of a large sunroom and I could see small gathering enjoyed in the space. Shortly after, I received my food said good bye to Jerome and gave him a thumbs up for the great atmosphere and customer service. I returned back to my Aunty's to share in the feast. We had: - Home made fruit punch: Delicious full body flavor, a tad on the sweet side. - Plantains: Tasty bites that go well with the dishes. I prefer them to be a bit more most and caramelized. - Snapper Fillet: Smothered in a type of brown stew, fresh tasting with a side of rice and peas and steamed cabbage. Scrumptious flavor! Hearty portion. Fish could be slightly more tender. - Oxtail: My Aunty got this with a side of steamed cabbage and zucchini butternut medley. She could stop talking about how good it was as she cleaned the bones and plate. - Slice of Carrot Cake: This was good but a bit on the oily and salty side for me. - Coconut Cake: Do an extra 20min of cardio next workout and treat yourself to this! Wow wow wow. I'd give Caribbean Heritage six stars if Yelp would let me. Walked here from Corn Hill on a summer night and was absolutely blown away. The generous helping of curry goat was the best I've ever had, and the plantains are fire. But the big surprise was the zucchini and butternut side, which was ridiculously flavorful. I didn't even consider leaving anything on the plate, and halfway thought through the consequences of eating the bones. Just as good as the meal was the conversation I had at the bar with Jerome Underwood, the co-owner (his wife is the chef; they started the restaurant this year after running a successful catering business for 15 years). Jerome was warm and engaging but never overbearing. I'm excited to see him again and sample the rest of the menu. FYI, for vegan and vegetarian brethren: there are several practiced dishes on the menu that are vegan (unusual for a Caribbean restaurant in my experience), because Jerome, a practicing Rastafarian, has been a vegetarian for forty years. It was an incredibly busy day so a few substitutions needed to be made for sides. That being said, the restaurant was fantastic at calling us to ensure we got the substitution most in line with what we wanted, rather than just assuming and throwing in a random dish. This was the first time we went to Caribbean Heritage and were pleasantly surprised. The place had a quaint charm inside and out. The art work had a lot of creative native pieces and was placed in a way to enhance the decor. The bar area was attractive as well. The food was amazing! I had the chicken stew dish. It came with two sides that were as generous as my main course. The plantains were the best I have ever eaten. They were light and seasoned perfectly. The rice and beans were equally tasty and authentic. The meal proved to be quite filling as there was no room for dessert. An incredible experience!! My partner and I came here for a romantic night out looking for someplace new but still intimate and relaxing - and we were in the mood for flavorful food. It was a tall order to fill all in one restaurant, but we found it here! Ambiance and music were wonderful - Pro Tip 1: ask to sit in the Heritage Room. Every dish is exquisitely flavored (including the sides which are a must-try!). Ask for the specials too - we had an off-menu black bean soup which was really well-seasoned. Pro Tip 2: there is heavy emphasis on well-made vegan options too which were really tasty and healthy. (As a vegetarian myself, I really appreciate a chef who takes dishes without meat just as seriously in terms of ingredients and flavor. To find this not only in Rochester but in a Caribbean restaurant of all places was a real treat for us.) And last but not least, for dessert, the Rum Cake is an absolute-MUST! Our hosts were very friendly and graciously explained the intricate process of making rum cake - which is on the scale of years by the way! After dessert, the chef came out to greet us and ask how we enjoyed the meal - which of course was amazing. I was thrilled with the menu because I am allergic to mushrooms, dairy intolerant, and prefer to avoid red meat, so I am used to going to newer restaurants and discovering only one or two things I can choose from.
