I was originally going to give them four stars, but the butcher counter knocked it down to three stars for me. I was born and raised in LA so my go to has always been Vallarta. Now that I live in MoVal, Cardenas is the closest grocery store like it so I shop here now. I should preface with saying I only come here for the produce section on most days. On occasion I buy meat and tortillas. Parking is plentiful. You'll always find a cart available. I spend the bulk of my time in the produce section. I've found that their produce lasts me much longer than other grocery stores in the area. Like any grocery store, not every single item is going to be as fresh as the day it was picked. But generally they have great quality and amazing pricing. I have had the pan dulce. I just think it's a tad overpriced at 4 for $5 for my liking. I'd rather support my local panaderia at that point. I love going to the tortilleria for fresh flour tortillas for burritos. They're a tad pricey at $4.99 a bag so I only buy it on occasion. It's certainly more convenient than making it at home. The self-check out is pretty convenient if you don't have a cart full of groceries. I did have trouble one time and the attendant was able to help me once I asked for assistance. Personally, I'm neurodivergent and get overstimulated quickly so I appreciate the lack of customer service others mentioned In all seriousness, I haven't experienced anyone being rude. But they're also not going out of their way to greet you or check in to see if you need assistance. It would be great if they had more than one lane with an attendant open. I've seen it get backed up several times. It could be solved easily by opening up a second lane. I appreciate that they have security working at night. I rarely get my shopping done during the day so I couldn't even tell you if security is working then, but I feel safer walking to my car at night knowing someone is watching the area. I have generally enjoyed going to the butcher here for a couple meats on occasion. I love the bistec ranchero for carne asada, but the price is a bit steep in this economy at $13.99/lb. Today, I went to restock as we were out of protein in my home. I got four different cuts of meat, two beef and two chicken. Two things occurred that really bothered me. (1) The butcher failed to change gloves between handling different types of raw food, like different species of meat (beef and chicken), which I suspect may be a health code violation. (2) The butcher used the same contaminated gloves when creating the labels and handling each bag of meat. All of my bags were contaminated :-( Unfortunately, I was in a hurry to get home as my husband needed the car to go to work so I didn't have an opportunity to say something or talk to someone. This regarding the cooked food section. It seems like the customer's presence is an inconvenience for them. I spoke with a manager on duty and voiced my grievance and give her feedback. This is review is for employee Vanessa at the self checkout registers. She provided horrible customer service. I was at the register and selected the wrong vegetable. She was standing one register away, and appeared to be lost in thought. Due to not having a name tag, I grabbed her attention by calling her "miss" multiple times. She finally turned to face me and I explained my issue. Without acknowledging me, she walked to the register and with a very impertinent attitude, she cancel the previous selection and walked away. This entire interaction she did not speak a word. I feel my request should not have been an inconvenience for her, given it was only one item, to display such poor customer service. The smell of cake and bread being baked, the smell of carnitas and tortillas being made freshly , and the view of the products that are available with a discount price looks well and organized. It would be 5 stars but like in every Cardenas Markets, the customer service needs improvement but the effort is much noticeably. Many of the employees don't know how to translate but now a days we have apps on our phone that can take care of that. The employees here try there best even though they have many things to do and sometimes that's the reason for the way the customer service is handled. So have patience with them, some of them are new. Other than that , the parking lot is available, there are always shopping carts at the entrance, and the restrooms are cleaner than other businesses. Be careful with the "Cardenas" brand milk sold at this location, twice it's happened to me that their milk goes bad way before expiration date. I purchased 2 of these gallons on the 13th of April with expiration date of the 29th, well the first one expired on the 18th and the other expired on the 20th. At a price of $4.49 it is not fair. I went to purchase a money order in the Cardenas one of the employees had profiled me and said I look "too Mexican" and I would need my California real ID to purchase the money order , I didn't have it on me at the time. But I went after it and came back to purchase the money orders, even after proving I have a ID the lady was still rude and extremely unprofessional especially in the times we are in, I will try and get the employees name so I can report them to Cardenas directly, but if you look Mexican be careful they will racially profile you! read more

The Cardenas on JFK & Perris... Every single time I purchase beer over there. The boxes are trash. I get a 24 pack of Budweiser. Always broken down boxes. literally three times..got home and had 3 to 4 bottles broken. I always assumed it was the condensation from the icebox that made the cardboard box soft. Yesterday 7/28/24 went to purchase a 24 bottle Budweiser... what did you know? One left, but when I went to the area everything all beer& alcohol beverages were out of the icebox area. The cashier today was acting very, very suspicious. When I had entered my credit card she started taking pictures of her screen, and my card got denied. I asked her why she was taking pictures and she told me she didn't speak English. I tried my credit card two more times as she continued to take pictures and giggled and kept saying she doesn't speak English. I ended up having to use my debit card and I was furious over that. My credit card locked because of suspicious activity at Cardenas. I wanna know what she was taking pictures of and why she was allowed to even have her cell phone while she was working. tried it again and she continued to take pictures of her side of the screen and my card locked. Great place to get some food to go when you don't want to cook. Their soup is good and it comes with all the trimmings. Champarado is a good hot drink made with chocolate. Their carnitas is also a good seller. Price wise it's about the same as everywhere else. Try it one day you'll be back. read more

We love the pan dulce but there has been several times including this morning 8-6-2024, as we were craving an ojo de pancha, tortugas and cachucha breads that we lost our apetite since we saw some big disgusting flies on top of the pan dulce... we mentioned it to the baking staff but they don't seem to care much about it. This Cardenas as least has a manager that cares about there customers. I've been trying for almost two weeks to buy Pepsi 2-Liters from my local Cardenas in Banning. You can tell this store favors Coke, which is their business, but they have plenty of items that are on sale. The store in Banning can care less about their customers, and tell you "they know it hurts the customer, but they aren't offering sale item because they are mad at the vendor" Thank you to this manager for offering the items in your add. I've come to this Cardenas on corner of Perris and JFK st A few times on my way home and every time I'm disappointed, the lack of food hygiene and health code violation is discussing all the fruit and veggies are bad quality and the pan dulce display always had flys in there. I feel since there are a few mexica stores around the area they don't feel they need to up their quality. I talked to the manager Celso and he didn't seem to care. I had a really bad experience today that made me not want to come back. I normally don't shop here anyway because to me it's expensive but it's the closest grocery store to my house and it was an urgency. Anyway besides the products being over priced the hot food is horrible. I ordered some ribs, rice m, beans and tortillas the ribs and rice hard the beans whatever and the tortillas dirty from dirty oil. Still my favorite Mexican market. People are always friendly, I can find anything I'm looking forward to make my authentic Mexican dishes, they sell the big bags of Chicharones that I love. Only complaint I have is the kitchen. If I want something good, I have to shop first thing in the morning when it's fresh. I feel that it loses its quality substantially by mid day.
