I had been here about fifteen years ago on a solo trip when I waited in an endless queue for a takeout order. That same line still existed a couple of weeks ago when Jamie W and I visited on my return to Lisbon. This time, we decided to try the dine-in option which I wasn't even aware of until I saw a YouTube video from a travel vlogger who recommended it. Sure enough, the line was a lot shorter and moved quite a bit faster. It turned out they serve up to 400 people in an expansive dining room. The menu goes beyond the pastels and offers croquettes, salt cod fritters, various sandwiches, and other pastries. Of course we ordered the 1,6€ Pasteis de Belem. Four of them (Photo 6). Based on a secret recipe dating back to 1837, they compare favorably to the multitude of competitors, even Manteigaria, whose shops appear almost everywhere in Lisbon. The custard filling is creamy but not excessive and it's not overly sweetened. The standout is the thick and flaky crust, tender with a touch of salt. The 2€ Iced Coffees with Milk was a nice complement. Since we didn't have time to get lunch while sauntering through Belem, we decided to take advantage of their cafe menu and each ordered the 3,9€ Tuna and Mayo with Boiled Egg and Lettuce on Mixed Wheat Toast (Photo 9). I know it sounds simple, but it satisfied much like the kombini sandos in Tokyo. Totally worthy of my 8,000 milestone. FOOD - 5 stars...the pastels are still the bomb 189 years later...the sandwich worked, too AMBIANCE - 5 stars...surprisingly spacious...you can also see the production process through large show windows on the way to the dining room SERVICE - 5 stars...a cordial and attentive server who had to juggle a lot of tables TOTAL - 5 stars...definitely a must-stop next to the equally essential Jeronimos Monastery RELATED - Exploring Lisbon? Just awesome sauce Pastel de nata: 10/10 -- I looooved this pastel de nata the most out of all of the different places I tried. I'll post a full round up but this one deserves its own post. It's the original since 1837 for a reason! it was incredibly flaky and crisp. the filling was just the right sweetness and creamy! Pasteis de belem is a must try! Super accessible by tram 15e, it was easy to walk over from the tram stop and hardly had any wait for me to find a seat and order. there are indoor and patio/outdoor seating options available.

What makes it special is watching the pastries being handmade right in front of you, which adds a level of freshness and craftsmanship that you can actually taste. The service was super fast and friendly. The pastel de nata came out perfectly, with that delicate flaky crust and warm custard that just hits differently when you know it was made moments ago. The espresso was equally impressive, rich and smooth, and the two together make for a simple but near perfect combination. If you are in the area, this is an easy and very satisfying stop.

The crust was super flaky and the tart was nice and warm out of the oven, but I didn't like the flavor of the custard. I did forget to add cinnamon to the top, but I don't think it would have helped me personally. The woman who stood next to me at the counter had a nearly orgasmic experience next to me, so it's obvious that my taste buds are apparently off. I loved the patience of the server, who got confused when I told her I wanted to eat in but wanted to take water to go. Note to self...Portuguese folks want to have their "to go" as "takeaway." What I also didn't know was that there was no place to sit!! I scooted down the counter just like all the other folks to watch the bakers prep the next gozillion pastries for the day. That was interesting. Then, I didn't know how to bus my dishes. I just left them on the counter like all the other folks and went away. I wouldn't skip going because of my personal taste buds, though. Enjoy it for yourself and let me know if you have a different opinion than I did!

I have often stopped at the bar despite the arrogant staff, as it does have a beautiful view point. However, after tonight never again. Enjoyed a very pleasant evening with friends until we asked for the bill, when we received it, there was a bottle of wine that has been bought to the table in error, it was not opened and the waiter acknowledged the mistake and took it away, it was though charged on the bill. They had also missed a glass of wine, which we also pointed out. The bill was €106.40 and should had been 90.40. I have no problem paying for what I have ordered, although I would also point out that €20 for a bottle of Planalto is absolutely outrageous! In "Paparucha's", a very nice steak restaurant a few doors away, it is priced at just €12 and even the extremely touristic "A Brasileira" only charges €13! So back to the dispute, they would not accept what we were saying, and they threatened to call the police if we did not pay. We paid the €90.40 and walked away. We actually then went back as was so astounded by their attitude and behaviour. We asked for the complaints book, they delayed a long time in getting it and then said they were going to call the police again, we said go ahead. They said we could not have the complaints book until the police arrived. The police did not appear and reluctantly we were given the book. It would seem there were quite a few complaints already. Apparently we are now barred, as if we would ever go back! Disgusting behaviour, please do yourself a favour and enjoy the view but don't bother with the kiosk. I believe that there is another kiosk in the lower gardens, so go there instead!
