What I mean is that Nickel Plate Arts is open for everyone to explore at their leisure, so visiting this place means entering houses, and climbing up stairs, and walking into real working artists studios. As in, real artists use these spaces to create their work, as is evidenced by the acrylics and paintbrushes and easels that are left out in the open for you to see. I'm kind of surprised that people like me are just allowed to tour this place, but that's what makes it so special: it's like you're getting a behind-the-scenes tour of an artist's daily life. In some of the rooms, the artists' artwork is displayed with price tags, if the mood strikes you to buy something. There is one person chilling at a table in one of the buildings, next to a table of complimentary coffee and tea, so I'm thinking this is the person you give your money to when you want to buy something. It's all very relaxed and zen, if you want to know the truth. It's like, here is a place to view beautiful art: come and look upon it for free and without any guidance. Now, this is my experience of Nickel Plate Arts during a casual Saturday afternoon -- I'm sure it's different when they have gallery openings and such. I also saw flyers lying about for different events that are held here. There is also a Little Free Library outside one of the buildings, which is awesome.

They seemed to be running around like they were understaffed, but I am not sure. Our class was scheduled to start at 7:30, but it didn't get started until right after 8pm. I'm all for giving people a few extra minutes to come in and get settled, but 30 plus minutes is a bit much for a scheduled class. We were rushed the entire time and had 30 minutes less to complete our paintings. Overall I enjoyed myself because I like painting, but I'm not sure I would go back if the experience would end up being similar. I sat next to a drunk couple and did not get to finish my painting fully. The drunk couple sucked, but I understand we can't control how others act when drinking, but we can definitely control when the class starts and being set up better.

The gallery was founded in 2000 and located in old downtown Zionsville in Bender Square Shops. It is directly across from the parking lot and street parking is an option. Art In Hand Gallery is a Zionsville co-operative art gallery owned, operated and staffed by a community of 24 local, Indiana artists. I fell in love with several pieces of Chris Davis who does Raku Pottery with feathers and horse hair incorporated into his work. Stunning! He has an art gala in Plainfield April 26-28, '19 at the Guilford Township Library in Plainfield I hope to make. There are many forms of gorgeous art here. I fell in love with several stunning pieces of jewelry ranging in price from $35 - $295, impressive oil paintings and watercolors, vibrant fused and stained glass, breathtaking photography and printmaking, extraordinary wildlife wood carving and woodworking and outstanding pottery including Raku pottery. The prices are affordable when given the quality and beauty of these marvelous pieces. I'm already regretting not purchasing two pieces today that was what I thought was an impulse decision so I passed. Now, that was a mistake and I need to correct. The inventory is every changing and has wonderful and unique art for both your home, office or gifts for that special person. Several of the artists are participating in upcoming art fairs, gallery exhibitions, teaching and other activities. Our instructor was so sweet and had a great playlist for us to listen to as we created our beautiful abstract pieces. I was able to bring drinks and snacks and overall just had a great relaxing and fun evening with my friends doing some thing unique. I will never attend another standard paint night again, and I would recommend the space for all sorts of events. The vibe and the purpose for the space is so cool, specifically designed to hold space for black and international artists, and you are definitely treated like family by everyone there.

I'd run into an issue but I called the studio, and the woman who answered was super friendly. Karlee, the instructor, was very patient and welcoming. She gave all instructions clearly and made sure we all were caught up before moving on to the next, and still ended the class on time. Their drink menu is great and we all loved the mimosas. The studio is very beautiful with all past paintings on the wall. I was also impressed by the size of the studio. I was told that they need at least 3 people to sign up to run a class, so make sure you grab a few friends and go there!!

At some point I guess we ran short of time because the instructor sped up severely. None of the painters were anywhere near the stage that she was talking about. She kept saying don't worry I'll repeat it. Well the repeating was a quick listing of all the things we should be doing, with no chance of actually doing those... like reading a grocery list very quickly. And the urgency that we need to take a group picture now and we could finish our paintings after taking the picture. This gave us about 3 minutes as they were taking our paints and brushes... basically kicking us out the door... that really left a bad taste and ruined the whole night. I understand that the employees would like to go home, but can we maybe have a steady pace instead of waiting for the next step in the beginning and then sprint at the end.

Yesterday's class featured a mug and plate making class where kids get to try their hand on the wheel and decorate their pottery with designs and paint. We hope they continue the series and we'd love to try other mediums through the JCC location down the road. I've noticed that Ripple Mobile Arts also offers private and adult group classes. Sounds like any kind of night with friends!
