Told me $ 1000 which was already insane -- i came back and they "fixed" other stuff without speaking to me first and owner told me that i owed $3000. Do not be swayed by the good reviews; they are either fake or from people happy to pay whatever good manners and decent service cost here, and it must be a lot! I dropped off my Mini Cooper for a clutch replacement and Ryan's price was about equal or slightly higher than most other shops. Why I chose him was his knowledge of the car. He told me the work involved which was very intense. He gave me options for upgrading the parts and I chose the more expensive racing parts. He had the vender specially build parts to give maximum performance but still maintain minimal peddle effort. I was away on a motorcycle trip while he was working on my car. He sent photos and did find many more problems with the car and with my permission, repaired all of them to factory specs or better. I plan on bringing my car back to him hopefully this winter to do additional work to it. I want race the car and he is a wealth of knowledge and maybe a little more expensive then other shops but every thing he did to my car has had a year of driving on it. I waited a long time to give him a review. He did some major modifications to the brakes and engine and exhaust, etc.. He used parts no one else heard of and after researching them, I found out that they were all very top end products. One person commented that it was apparent that the school wasn't his main source of income. It's not really my business but he actually told me that it wasn't and he did this for the passion and love of cars. I saw that every time I went to his shop. Thumbs up to them. Their crew was super friendly and if your a car buff, they'll show you stuff that will amaze you. They cleaned every part they worked on. I wish I could leave a review using NO stars. These guys are misogynistic, condescending frauds. After about 9k worth of "work" they were unable to provide copies of receipts with details of the work due to "a new computer system having lost files blah, blah". (I needed copies for a sale, which fell through due to this experience.) A second shop saw no sign of the work they'd said was done. Wish I'd done my research first re shops. An awful experience. Went in expecting to pay more for top notch service but at least get quality care. The car kept breaking down every time we drove it. They kept on changing and replacing parts at outrageous prices. When we wanted an itemized receipt of the work they'd done ($13,000 !), they refused to give it to us which made us really suspicious that much of the work was never performed. This is the worst experience I've ever had getting a car fixed!!! He did more work than necessary and went $2,000 over the estimate without tell me it would cost more. Quality of work was substandard and extremely expensive! He then extorted more money from me by holding my car hostage until the check cleared, which is an unusual policy. If you want to do business and deal with arrogant, obnoxious, shady, lying, self absorbed, condescending, moronic people like Ryan who runs the place, then this is the perfect mechanic/garage to go to. I reached out to The Car Doctor over the summer to get my car tuned and have some work done. He was enthusiastic about the car I brought in and continued to share with me how he had owned a few and held some performance records with his work and the car. After I visited, he told me to call back the following week to see if they could schedule me in. So I did, and he said he was backed up until after Labor and to check back at the end of August. I checked back in before Labor Day to set something up for post Labor Day in September and he never returned my messages that I left. When I finally got him on the phone, he hung up on me. I called back the following day (October 1st- 7 weeks from the initial conversation) and he said he wouldn't work on my car, and that he had been saying that from the start. My experience with The Car Doctor was very poor. I brought in my 1995 Porsche 911 to have the convertible top fixed. They said that one of the motors for one side of the convertible top was bad and that in these cases it is best practice to replace BOTH motors. It would cost $2,500 to repair. The work was supposedly done and it was driven back to my storage facility by the manager of that facility. Ryan Pilla, the head mechanic at The Car Doctor, told me that the vehicle required an additional $6,500 more in a variety of repairs, some of which I knew had to be done, and I agreed to have those extra repairs done, since I had not spent any money on the car in 13 years . I had a mechanic from the Car Doctor go and pick the car back up from the storage facility to do the extra work. The Car Doctor performed the extra work (which had nothing to do with the convertible top) and kept the car there until I went out to the Hamptons to pick up the car about a month later. Upon starting the car, I began to put the top back down; however only ONE motor worked! The other was still broken, even though I had paid $2,500 for BOTH motors to be fixed. The result was that the top was only being pulled up on one side and the top snapped in half! This happened RIGHT IN FRONT of the mechanic! To be clear, the top had not been used since The Car Doctor supposedly fixed it two months prior. The car was driven exactly ONCE, for half an hour, by the storage facility employee, who drove it from The Car Doctor to the storage facility, before then being driven back to The Car Doctor about one month later by one of their own mechanics for the $6,500 of further repairs. Since the top snapped in half right in front of the mechanic on duty I assumed I would have no problem getting them to REFIX the top without charge. However, after several days, Ryan Pilla told me that I would have to pay for the broken top because they DID fix it and it MUST HAVE BEEN BROKEN by the guy who drove it back to the storage facility! For the record the man who drove it says that he did NOT have the top up at all when he drove it back to the storage facility. I then responded that surely his work must be covered under a WARRANTY of some sort that would last more than half an hour, to which he said he would have to get back to me. He then called me back to inform me that he had only fixed ONE convertible top motor, and that I had not paid to have both motors repaired, which was patently false! Unfortunately for me I did not keep the original bill, and The Car Doctor refuses, after a dozen attempts by me, to provide another copy. However, I am certain, with 100% confidence that Mr. Pilla told me over the phone when I first brought the car in that it was best practice to repair both motors, and that the $2,500 was payment FOR repairing BOTH motors. After he told me that they had only fixed one motor, I said, "but then you could not have possibly allowed the car to leave the premises if the top did not work, right?", to which he replied, that when the car had left his premises two months before, the top DID in fact work and that it must have been the second, unrepaired motor, which he claims I did not pay to have fixed, gave out RIGHT AFTER leaving the premises! It would HAVE to be RIGHT after, since the car was driven exactly TWO times since leaving The Car Doctor...a half hour trip to the storage facility and then back again to The Car Doctor one month later, by the Car Doctor mechanic, for the $6,500 of other repairs. So instead of acknowledging that they were paid to fix both convertible top motors and failed to do so, Mr. Pilla claims that the unrepaired motor which WORKED when the car left their premises all of the sudden, in the HALF HOUR that it was driven by a non Car Doctor employee to the storage facility, broke! The end result of this fiasco is that I wound up bringing my car to another dealer who had to charge me $8,000 to completely replace the convertible top. Although, even without a bill, standard industry pricing would confirm that $2,500 is about double to pay for just one convertible top motor being fixed. Overall, they were a horror to deal with, their work was poor, and as I found out when I arrived to pick the car up, the pressure from Mr Pilla to to do even MORE repairs was relentless. The serviceman at Storms Motors informed me that I was certainly far from the first person to come to him with similar complaints about The Car Doctor. Sure, he is a competitor, but I have learned a lesson regarding using authorized dealers versus independents to fix your car...if you choose the latter, make sure you know who you are dealing with before going down that road. I THINK ANYONE WHO GOES TO THE CAR DOCTOR AFTER READING THIS REVIEW NEEDS TO ALSO GO TO A PSYCHIATRIC DOCTOR. read more

What a scam artist! Auto owner's beware! I was price gouged for parts for my car. The Car Doctor refused to give me an itemized invoice. The car doctor was holding my car hostage since I refused to pay for services and parts without seeing a detailed itemized invoice. After calling the police, an invoice was finally produced! the Car Doctor was demanding cash, and cites that when one pays cash the customer does not have to pay New York sales tax! The Car Doctor. makes it as if they are doing you a favor not having to pay New York sales tax but in truth he is screwing the customer since they do not give an invoice when one pays cash. Better to pay tax with the Car Doctor, as least you will get an itemized invoice and you know what you are paying for (but you are still getting screwed, since the invoice you will receive is BOGUS) Time to call the Better Business Bureau, New York state tax authority and the Attorney General! The kind of mechanics that created the reputation of "beware of mechanics". When I pulled my Mercedes SL in for the first time, they greeted me and shook my hand and it felt like a cool place. Then weeks later and a $7,000 bill with nasty phone calls throughout the time with vague references to the upcharge, $2000 turned into 7. They were downright rude when it came to explaining the charges like you were doing something wrong. How does a tune-up, a radio and brakes go from $2000 to $7,000. Additionally I sold a car that was worth $5K to someone who took it there to be checked out and they told him it needed all this work that it didn't need and they told him if he did the work, he could sell it for $14,000. What a joke. They ended up again, at $7,000 with dramatic video of unecessary welding and a ton of work that was already new- I know it was new because I did the work perfectly. They also cracked his cam cover because they over tightened it and when he went back to complain they said "We dont know how this happened and were absolutely rude to him. Another friend of mine brought a VERY expensive Porsche there and Ryan said to him without turning around- Sorry- I'm busy with Seinfelds cars right now. They ended up damaging the car at one point. I have had a great experience with the Car Doctor from every aspect - well above and beyond. When I purchased a cute, immaculate and relatively modest little vintage beach buggy I received amazing service from making sure it was delivered to me in perfect condition and being sure my son and I knew all the aspects of how to drive it - from safety to performance. The owners/management were easy and a pleasure to deal with. I sincerely felt that they were only satisfied if we were also satisfied - and that we were. It's apparent that what they do is not only their occupation, but their passion. I would buy from them again in a minute and have already recommended them. I only take my time and effort to write a review when I find an establishment that offers "remarkable" service as I feel they deserve the credit. Also, in this case, I was so perplexed when I read the other not-so-great reviews prior to dealing with them. I have to admit, I was waiting for some kind of problem to happen. As I got to know the owner during this more than smooth transaction, I felt the review/s just didn't fit. I had to ask the Car Doctor "why"? After he showed me a slue of great texts from recent, random super satisfied customers, I came to understand that out of thousands of customers, many who come back again and again, perhaps when you have the occassional "hypochondriac", there's NO "Doctor" that can help them. read more
