My husband and I were here to see the "Wonder of Wood" exhibit. This is a free center where local…read moreartists can display and sell their art. They do ask for donations. The building used to be a hospital, with a healthcare facility attached. This center is in the old doctor's office area, hence the specimen door in the bathrooms. The retirement community is in the old hospital area of the building. The exhibit of woods was wonderful and I would have bought some of it had I had that kind of money. Most items that I really liked were "NFS" not for sale. I could see why. There was a collection of very old photos of Galena from the Alfie Mueller Collection that were fascinating. There is a room with some chairs and a short video of an interview of Mr. Mueller, who has passed away, that you should watch. This visit took us maybe one hour, maybe a little longer.

For example, in summer, beginning at the end of June they offer free films for kids from 6-8PM. You can also get Tango lessons. It occupies, I believe, a former hospital, and is adjacent to a long term care facility. So the "studios" are former patient rooms. There is gallery and exhibit space right at the entrance, and a small downstairs space for performances, and in winter, a farmer's market and craft fair. A pretty bare bones, utilitarian space. The art upstairs can be purchased. Entrance is free and donations are welcome. In a town where 85% of building are historic, I was kind of expecting the center to be in an old school, perhaps. But kudos to the town and the art community for even having a center for the arts. And for not naming it something like "Community Memorial General Center for The Arts." And most important, there is a lot of nice artwork here.

Have had a great experience at Taag Studios and Gallery. Wonderful, pleasant and knowledgable one…read moreto one attention when needed but ample opportunity to view the wide variety of art styles and mediums at your leisure also. We'll curated art and artists. Many local artists are featured which is such a refreshing experience after visiting local galleries that one might expect to find local artists but find the majority to be from out of state and less than unique works. Taag, in addition to featuring artists that are well known and with many years of experience, has been a starting point for a number of artists that are now very successful, as current -very talented emerging artists. The classes offered have been patiently and knowledgably taught (as told to me by parents and students involved) and a very generous number of scholarships for students are offered. My daughter received mentorship from the director of Taag when an unexpected delay in her college plans occurred (shoulder surgery delayed her attendance at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design for a year). She is now not only attending MIAD full time, on the Deans list and a member of the National Art Honor Society but an exhibiting Artist at Taag. My daughter looked for other opportunities within the area (we are not from iowa city) and found nothing inclusive for new artists with limited funds and chose to contact Bella Vine- Taag's director, after seeing a news report about other artists that had challenges who were mentored by Bella and who had great success following their involvement with Taag. I speak now, both objectively and subjectively in saying that for both artists (which I am not, but have associations with) and art lovers (which I am) Taag is a very great gallery- inclusive, well curated and comfortable, and an awesome mentoring and educational experience. It is unique to find this, especially this combination, anywhere in this area. Taag is a gallery well worth your time to visit....as well as support if you are so inclined!

Over a period of 20 years, Nick built an elaborate porch on his home made of concrete and various materials, covered the house with concrete, and built 40 sculptures in the yard. Katherine built elaborate gardens to support the sculptures. At the age of 70, Nick was no longer able to create sculptures, so he turned to painting. He created over 200 oil paintings before his death in 1962. The site was restored by the Kohler Foundation, a friend to the arts, then gifted to Pecatonica Educational Charitable Foundation in 1997. The PEC Foundation today maintains and operates this unique sculpture garden. Sadly, many of his sculptures were unable to be saved or had just disappeared over the years, but many fine examples of his work are on display. Grandview is another of Wisconsin's numerous properties created by self-taught artisans, Grandview is a fascinating place and a tribute to an immigrant's dedication to art, with respect to his past but with patriotism toward his adopted country, Just a short ride off US 151 near Dodgeville, Grandview is a worthwhile detour for art aficionados.
