Drove down from Denver for a long weekend. Stopped at Captain Zipline to let the kids climb on the aerial ropes course for two hours. Josh and Hella were our chaperones. Kids had a great time. This is our third ropes course, we have been to the new one in Bailey and the one in Castle Rock. I have to say that challenge wise, this is the best designed course out of all of them. If you are into active outdoor sports, this is only marginally exciting. Super expensive for a family, lots of waiting in line, and the guides are constantly reminding you to tip them. The whole activity lasts about 2 1/2 hours, but with only about 5 minutes of actual ziplining. There was a quick orientation and then we were off on a series of ziplines that stretch across and around a small canyon or ravine east of Salida. There is a short 100 yard hike between each station, but nothing demanding. The ziplines must have been about 200 to 400 yards long and everyone seemed to have a pleasant time. It wasn't very scary, and moms, dads and little kids were going without much trepidation. Was it worth the $? I didn't think so. If you are a thrill seeker and have participated in any action sports (rafting, kayaking, climbing, rapelling, ropes courses, mountain biking, rollerblading, etc) you won't find this all that thrilling. If you are a more sedentary sort and get your thrills mainly from TV, then this might be pants-wetting excitement for you. The typical, non-active families seemed to be having very expensive fun. Regardless, I had a lot more thrills mountain biking and climbing the local mountains. I think I'd have had a better time taking the $ and going on a raft trip. Hope this helps other action sports folks out there. read more

Had a wonderful time! Chose to do both the aerial rope course and zipline experience in the afternoon. We were the first and only people signed up for our aerial course experience but Derek was a wonderful guide. Super friendly and cracking all the jokes, he would fit right in as a Jungle Cruise tour guide in Disneyland. He gave us plenty of time to understand the mechanics of the harnesses and brought great tunes into the canyon so it wasnt an awkward silent experience. He gave proper advice and support when needed and let us each concentrate on maintaining our balance when we needed it. When we returned for the zipline experience we were lucky enough to have Derek again with Tony as an additional guide. We had 2 other people join us and it was great to have both guides to help keep the energy up. I was so grateful to have a familiar face because my husband wasnt going to go on the zipline course after the aerial experience (he enjoyed it but...he is afraid of heights). Both Derek's encouragement and Tony's light hearted jokes really helped ease his fears and he ended up doing the WHOLE thing and loving it. I truly cannot wait to return to the aerial course and take on more courses that I didnt get to. It was 2.5 hours and we started on the easy courses and built our way up. I truly am hooked and would love to return to take on a double black diamond course one day. The zipline experience is where the scenic views are at. Bring a go pro if you have a great group for awesome footage. Dont forget to look down! Let me just start by saying that I'm a 42-year old veteran cop. I've been shot at, punched, had my squad car rammed by badguys, and kicked more than a few doors when I knew that someone was probably hunkered behind them waiting for me with a gun. I say all that to say this: I don't really consider myself a pansy, but I fu**ing LOATHE heights. I mean, nauseous on a stepladder, let's just put the Christmas lights along the sidewalk, who cares if it's raining in the living room because the Legion of Boom riding a herd of wild unicorns couldn't drag my ass onto the roof DETEST heights. So of course, when my wife said she wanted to go ziplining while we were in Colorado, I had a good cry and then turned on the Google machine. Captain Zipline popped up, I booked us, and proceeded to drive to what I was sure would be a shrieking, tear-filled, 7-second vertical canyon tour involving gravity, a sudden stop, and my two minutes of fame on CNN as rescue teams were being filmed searching for my molars on the desert floor. I was so wrong. We had to do a last-minute reschedule, moving from an afternoon tour to the morning one. Easy and trouble free. They were great about it. When we arrived, after I finished applying sunscreen and Rolaids, we met our two guides, Josh and Rob. GREAT guys--highly competent, super kind, and very good at putting everyone at ease. So, off we went. The sign in process was blessedly brief, the outfitting and instruction portion was easy to follow and informative, and then it was go-time. My stomach and armpits were all like "we're totally walking back," but my feet and ego were like "Your wife already went. Stop. Embarrassing. Us." Next thing I knew, I was 200 feet above the canyon floor on a freaking cable, cruising through the sky like Iron Man. Well--okay--if Iron Man was trying really hard not to let out a little bit of pee. But the heights thing? ZERO issues. It was awesome, and I was in. After the third run, I was trying to get up front at the stations, and probably being obnoxious to both our guides. It's what I do, okay? Anyway, I was having a blast. The entire tour was just over two hours, and well worth the 79 bucks. The scenery and location are both gorgeous, as is the drive in. You get six trips over the canyons, and the speed and views are very cool. The staff were fantastic, and the entire operation was very professional and extremely safety-conscious. The equipment looked to be in perfect condition, and everything appeared to be highly controlled, structured, and well-organized. All in all, an excellent choice if you're looking for a family adventure. I'd recommend Captain Zipline to anyone, even my fellow heights sissies. I know you're out there, brothers and sisters. Low five. Low, low five. I still hate heights, but I would return to Captain Zipline in a heartbeat. PS Don't tell my wife I wrote this review. She still thinks I'm a little traumatized. I was super excited to zip line for my first time and Captain Zipline didn't disappoint. A little unorganized at the start -- their reservation and payment system isn't exactly in line with 2012 - you drive your own car into the canyon and up the gravel road (which was interesting, not necessarily terrible). The trip was fun, would've been better with a smaller group so you didn't have to wait so long between zips. I think we had about 14 - although, all of the people in our group were fun, so that made it a lot better. The guides we had, Randy and Jodi, were the best! Clearly enthusiastic about their jobs, really knowledgeable and plain fun to be around. Having a good guide really made the trip! We paid $175 for two of us to go - there are $5 off coupons on trippons.com. Seemed like a lot of money, but I hear zip lining is expensive no matter where you go. (Probably to cover their insurance policies!). In addition, the guides work on tips - I was originally discouraged by this since we were already paying nearly $90 a person, but the guides were such a pleasure that I had no problem throwing a $20 in the tip jar when we left. The review below says you can't take pictures, but this must've changed because we took tons of great shots! One of the gals in our group even held her camera in her mouth and took video of the final zip! Overall a great time, worth the wait between zips - I can't say I'd go back (kind of a 'been there, done that' spot) - but I would recommend it to a friend, or take my young nieces back for a thrill of their own! read more

We had such an awesome time at Captain Zipline. Our car broke down on the way, and when we called, Kay was very understanding. We were able to reschedule for the next day. When we got there, Derek and Preston were our guides, and they were knowledgeable, funny, and entertaining as hell. After a brief training, we started zipping. We always felt safe, and had a blast. The good reviews are very accurate. Unfortunately, the bad reviews here and on TripAdvisor are also very accurate. After having experienced both the good and the not-so-good aspects of Captain Zipline firsthand on 8/20/15, I decided to read quite a few other reviews before writing mine. I can say that based on our personal experience, both the good reviews AND the bad reviews are mostly spot on. Here's the deal. If you're one of the 98% or so of people who has no issues whatsoever, whether it be scheduling, medical, or need some sort of even minor accommodation, then you will probably have a fun time. Unfortunately, the owner Monty is completely unwavering, uncaring, and unhelpful if you have any sort of issue whatsoever. In summary: - 4 star - areal course - 3 star - zipline - 4 star - guides - 0 star - owner - If you go, you will probably have a decent time (albeit somewhat overpriced). - The zipline is probably more fun for kids than adults. - Pay in advance at your own risk. - Pay on the day of your trip for lower risk. - Book one attraction at a time because once he has your money, you no longer matter. - Monty (the owner) is uncaring, even for legitimate issues. - Know that you are lining the pockets of someone who only cares about himself. - The guides are awesome but have no power to do anything. - The location is remote and a true medical emergency could prove very problematic. - We did not see basic first aid, ice, or an easy extraction route from the areal course. Here's our story. We booked our trips well in advance. We did the areal course in the morning and the zipline in the afternoon of the same day. We had a great time on the areal course but as the morning went on, my wife's occasional asthma issue reared its ugly head. It's not something she experiences often, so generally we are able to lead a very active lifestyle without a hitch. When we got back to home base from the areal course, we explained the situation to the guides and asked if it would be a big deal to move our zipline tour to the next day in order to give her some time to recover from her unexpected asthma attack. One guide (who will remain unnamed) said something to the effect of "well, I don't see why it should be a problem but you'll have to talk to Monty... and you'll have to catch him in the right mood... good luck". Well, the guide was right. Monty wouldn't help his own grandmother, I don't think. We explained the situation to Monty and asked in the nicest possible way if we could move our afternoon trip to the next day. He said that it would not be possible as they were "killing it" and it was "busy season" and they were "completely booked" and then went on to suggest in his medical wisdom that my wife would be fine and maybe she should just rest for an hour and put her feet in some cold water. Really? (By the way, cold water is a really bad idea for asthma). Also, a weekday when most kids are in school is NOT "busy season". Because he was unwilling to move us to the next day, we came back, but my wife had to skip a couple of sections in order not to have another asthma attack (since she was not fully recovered). We took a shortcut and missed a view of some sort (no big deal really), and she skipped the last zipline in order to avoid the uphill walk at the end. She really did struggle throughout and it was very much unnecessary. All Monty had to do is let us reschedule to the next day. Instead, Monty flat out lied to us and said he was booked up. How do we know this? Well, as soon as we got in our car after he said no, we went to the Captain Zipline web site and clicked "Online Reservations" to see what was available. You know what? Only once I tried to choose more than 10 people did the system say "unavailable". His web site was ready to take our credit card number for any booking between 1 and 10 people for the next day. So, Monty could have easily accommodated our simple medically justified request but simply chose not to. My final take is this. Don't give this company any money you are not willing to lose. If I were you, I would book on the same day you want to go because this attraction is really not that big of a deal and there are plenty of other great things to do around Salida if you happen to not get a slot. However, if you run into a problem, regardless of the legitimacy of the issue, you are on your own because Monty just doesn't care one bit about you once he has your money. He will either lie to you or just hide behind "company policy" in order to not help. Monty wrote the policies he's hiding behind! Just remember that when he refuses to help you. Lastly, I suspect that Monty or one of his staff will come on here and try to recant certain aspects of my review. Someone at his office is an eloquent writer and may try to convince you that my review is somehow misleading. Note that he replies to almost ALL negative reviews trying to refute them. read more

Oh my god I cannot begin to express how much fun I had. The experience is impeccable. Harmony and Sherri gave us laughter, comedy, hilarious jokes... They made us feel safe, outlined things in great detail, and provided history of the area we were zip-lining in! This was our first time zip lining, and we came for a birthday. Not just any birthday (a 70th birthday, with most of us over 70!) I am so grateful for them. Harmony and Sherri rock! I am blown away by them!!! Zipline tours appear to be the next big craze in CO. A bit late considering tourists in Mexico have been doing it for years! It seems every mountain town you drive through has some sort of advertisement for Zipline tours. First of all, the staff was friendly upon arrival to the main office in Salida. We first had to sign a waiver that eliminates all liability to the company. Then they offered a cooler to place bottles of water for the ride up to the zipline location. I was bummed when our group was told that the picture of the big 4x4 carrying people on the website is no longer in service. We then hopped into a Ford Econovan and drove about 10-15 minutes to the zipline area. The zipline area appeared well maintained. They had a small training area that everybody in the group had to use first before doing the first zipline. We then proceeded to go through the zipline tour. The ziplines were fun and some were fairly high over canyons. Here is the bummer. I wasn't allowed to bring my digital SLR camera with me. The camera was in a sport case, but they wouldn't allow it. If you have a small point and click, bring that...even better yet, bring the Go Pro camera. Overall, this was a fun experience. I wish it was a bit longer. I also wish the tour was a bit more personal rather than us being just another tour group to push through as fast as possible. It sounds like the company was planning on building more ziplines and eventually offering a night time zipline tour. read more

My wife, my son and I did the 1 PM trip and had a great time. Our guides mostly did a good job, although I have a negative comment about one of them. We had a lady in our group who was very nervous about stepping off the edge of the cliff. One of the guides was very understanding and did a tandem crossing with her on the first cable. With a lot of encouragement from the group, she managed to do the other crossings on her own. The other guide, however, said things to her that I thought were very unprofessional, such as, "I've never seen anyone as scared to do this as you." This is NOT the way to talk to a paying customer. A guide should do everything he can to boost the confidence of those who are a bit frightened. Overall, it was a fun experience, but for the price that ziplining costs, I doubt I'll do it again. read more
