I love when family and friends come to visit us because it's always an excuse to take one of the experiences at Captain Dave's. Most recently, we did an afternoon whale watching cruise. And it was fantastic! A whale breaching was not on my bingo card!!!

Dolphins

Capt. Gary and Matt took us out on the safari and we had an amazing time! We were on the water for two hours and saw a huge pod of dolphins. They offered us some great commentary and lots of fun facts! I can't wait to come back again!

Ahoy there matey! We are on an ocean adventure. Capt Dave's Dolphin & Whale Safari is one of the highest-rated whale watching companies in Southern California, they offer year-round boat tours and educational whale. They're located at Dana Point harbor. We took a late morning tour with Capt Marie and XO Luke on their fastest boat. We went out to the sea for two hours and saw hundreds of Common Dolphins and Anchovies. The sea was a bit rough but worth it. The entire tour was very enjoyable and worth the price. Parking lot is available. Overall, I enjoyed the safari tour and seeing Dolphins up lose was surreal. I highly recommend them.

We chose Captain Dave's Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari for my mom's burial at sea, and I truly cannot say enough about the experience--especially Captain Gary Brighouse. It was more than a service. It was healing. From the beginning, Captain Gary was incredibly kind, patient, and attentive. On the way out of the harbor, we saw an injured pelican. My family are huge animal lovers, and emotions were high--and my aunties genuinely considered stopping everything to help. Captain Gary calmly reassured us the situation would be handled and shared that he regularly helps injured wildlife and brings them to the Bolsa Chica Wetlands. That alone told us what kind of person he is. He guided us through the ash scattering with so much care and respect, giving us space without ever making us feel rushed. Afterward, with time still remaining, he offered to take us out to look for dolphins and whales. He positioned us thoughtfully in quieter areas away from crowded boats, which made the experience feel peaceful and personal. At one point, we were following dolphins so closely it felt like we were flying alongside them--something we will never forget. Back at the dock, he offered brownies, which was such a thoughtful and personal touch. My sister's dad, who is a boatman himself, spent time talking with Captain Gary, and Gary was gracious and engaged the entire time. This was one of the hardest days of our lives, and somehow it became something peaceful, meaningful, and even beautiful. We are so grateful. I cannot say enough good things about Captain Dave's Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari. We would highly recommend Captain Gary Brighouse--he turned a very hard day into something comforting, memorable, and truly special.

We went on this boat yesterday and had an amazing day. The captain and his crew were friendly and informative. Well, we didn't see a lot. The day was filled with laughter, beautiful views, and the company on the boat was great!

This whale watching trip was spectacular! We saw giant pods of dolphins, sea lions, and three different kinds of whales. It was absolutely phenomenal. The crew (Captain Matt, Hannah, and Daelynn) were awesome. They were friendly, Hannah was entertaining and super informative, and they made the trip more enjoyable. We got incredibly lucky with the vast amount of animals we saw. It was truly magical.

I have to give credit when credit is due! Such amazing sightseeing! I came last minute (like 15 min b4 ride was heading out) during whale festival on the last ride on the Zodiac. The Zodiac is about a 20 person low raft--it goes very fast, a little bumpy, and you can get very close to the animals! I did my research beforehand and specifically wanted to go on this. At first I was a little apprehensive I was going to have fun because it was windy/cold and for a moment I felt a little scared I'm not sure why as I have been on a ton of cruises and am a good swimmer but seeing us very low on the expansive water got me worried for a second. But after spotting my first dolphin that evaporated. I saw prob top 10 sights of my life when I saw a feeding of anchovies during sunset. And the weird thing is I've lived in OC my whole life but it just felt so special. I saw like a 100 dolphins, seals, birds, and whales! My whole family who I had to coarse to come on the tour all loved it! I would recommend dressing very warm, hat, glasses, scarf, and bring water. Parking is always easily available at the harbor. You buy tickets/check-in upstairs and wait for the caption. When captain arrives they will take you to the bathrooms before heading to the boatI highly recommend this company and tour!

We did a private tour with Captain Dave's whale watching on Saturday, and it was an unforgettable experience! We brought four of our friends with us, and everyone is still talking about it almost a week later. Our crew, Captain Caitlyn and Janel, were absolutely fantastic--so knowledgeable, pleasant, and professional throughout the trip. I felt completely in capable hands the entire time. We were lucky enough to see a massive Fin whale and hundreds of dolphins, which was breathtaking to witness. Even with the rough seas, it was such a smooth and enjoyable experience thanks to the amazing crew. This company really knows what they're doing, and we can't wait to book another trip with them someday. Highly recommend for anyone who loves the ocean and marine life!

Who gets to sit in the pods? Can those be reserved or is it first come first serve basic?

Hi Diana. The 2 eye-to-eye underwater viewing pods in Manute’a are areas in the hull with cushioned padding on the floor & glass windows on both sides. Each 'pod' can usually fit 1 or 2 adults or 2 to 3 kids at a time. Everyone takes turns. No…

The company did a great job of emailing us all of the information days before our tour and there was ample parking. We ended up parking across the street with no issues at all. We walked over to Balboa and checked in at David's locker and lined up and boarded the boat. There was plenty of seating and the boat wasn't completely full. We opted to stand most of the tour but there were plenty of spots to sit. There were bathrooms on board that were very clean. We liked that they had a full bar, with very friendly bartenders, and they also had chips and other snacks for sale. We didn't see any animals for the first hour or so of the tour, but then we went further out and saw hundreds of dolphins! It was the coolest thing I've ever seen! They swam with the boat and our tour guides were so amazing that they let us stay out almost another full hour just to enjoy the experience with the dolphins. No orcas were spotted but we were ok with that! The staff was very nice, helpful, and had great personality and attitude. I would definitely book this to her again because everyone was so friendly and nice and we had such a great time even though it was really hot. We didn't really feel that uncomfortable because of the ocean breeze and I can't wait to go back for the Christmas light tour and for another whale watching tour soon!

Wish 0 was…read morepossible and want to warn anyone interested in enjoying their night to avoid this establishment. Sorry for the lengthy review, but there are so many varied reasons to avoid this business. I rarely leave reviews like this, but the way this company handled themselves was so unprofessional that I feel other customers should know. This rental was for my birthday. The experience itself had several issues, including difficulty locating the dock, a malfunctioning Bluetooth system, confusing parking information, and an overall lack of professionalism before departure. The bigger problem started afterward. We were accused of returning late and leaving the boat excessively dirty. We were one minute late, and threw our trash away and checked the boat before we left to make sure there was no mess. I repeatedly asked for photo evidence of the alleged mess. None was provided. The description then escalated from a cleaning issue to claims that we had "thrashed" the boat. The timing allegations also kept changing. We understood the return time to be 7:30 PM. Their own attendant later stated he called us at 7:31 PM, but management subsequently characterized us as about 15 minutes late and charged me 55$ for being 1 minute late. Throughout the exchange, I repeatedly asked that everything remain in writing. I was frustrated, so I actually used ChatGPT to help me keep every response professional, factual, and measured rather than responding emotionally. That effort was clearly not reciprocated. The owner's messages eventually included: "Your out of your mind if you think that's going to happen." When I asked to not be charged a late arrival fee for being 1 minute late. and "Next time go to Newport that's where your kind need to rent Duffy boats." I still do not know what "your kind" was intended to mean, but there is simply no professional context in which a business owner should speak to a customer that way. I was also told that if I posted what they considered a "false review," they would make sure it did not get posted and would make sure my card was charged for the disputed overtime. That was especially concerning. What is most disappointing is that I was not initially trying to attack this business. I asked for evidence, corrected disputed facts, requested written communication, and tried repeatedly to resolve the issue professionally. We could easily have become repeat customers. Instead, the situation escalated into unsupported accusations, threats of additional charges, refusal to provide requested evidence, and increasingly hostile messages from the owner. The lesson here is simple: problems happen. Good businesses resolve them professionally. This one did not. I would strongly recommend choosing another Duffy or electric-boat rental company, especially for a birthday or family event where you want the experience to remain enjoyable. And respectfully, the owner might benefit from using ChatGPT himself before sending messages like "you're out of your mind" and "your kind."
