I always like going to the local supermarket to look for items that are specific to that country…read more Carrefour is a supermarket chain from France though. Good selection, fresh produce, it was a good store, decent prices. I think they must have expanded into several buildings because you'd turn a corner and then there was another 90° turn in another direction with more stuff ! It was pretty cool exploring their space. They also had one of those European flat ground escalators that could take a shopping cart up and down as the store was two levels. I didn't need any help, but there were plenty of employees, stocking shelves, etc.

We were staying in an apartment along the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, and since they were self…read morecatering, we needed to find a local grocery store. Of course I checked on Yelp and the Mercadona was at the top of the list. It was also located a few blocks away and easy walking distance. The store is rather large, but from the entrance, one wouldn't think so. They have a great selection of food products and other household items. I picked up a baguette, some jamon (lol), brie and white cheddar cheese, potato chips, and a bottle of wine. Oh, and paper towels, dish soap, and a sponge. It was all pretty reasonably priced. The bread was freshly baked but I'm not sure from where. The jamon and cheese were great! And the brand of chips were pretty good. I scored with the bottle of wine as well. Overall, I was able to recreate a cafe meal for less than the cost at a cafe, with enough left over, except the bread and wine, for another lite meal. Overall, this is a great store to shop at. Much like my Albertson's at home, but better...way better!

But anyways workers are nicer here. Well stocked but I guess Spain likes to keep everything stocked well. Make sure you bring your own go green bags. They will charge you for plastic bags. Just a FYI most Mercadona closes at 21:15 which is a lie they close 20:50 or 21:00 always early. I don't know why but don't follow the closing time just get there early. They have street parking (HA) good luck. Or they have a parking garage next door. Not sure if you pay or if they validate it.

When you walk in it has that mixture of smells that you know you're absolutely repulsed by and at the same time thrilled to smell. You know everything in there is fresh; the fruit is fresh, the fish is fresh, the vegetables are diverse and look just picked, and the cheese is amazing. The charcuterie is like a fantasy! This market even has plants for sale as well as flowers and a few additional outlying products. When you walk up to a stall, it's not guaranteed that you're going to get a smile or a happy, "How are you?" But it is guaranteed that you will get good service. Selling the product is the name of the game here. I fully believe that if you are ever in barcelona and you come by this market you should absolutely stop in and see what it's all about. It's one of those rare places that you will be extremely glad that you saw and you'll think about later in life even if you don't buy anything, it's worth a look.

Unlike Boqueria, there aren't that many vendors selling cooked foods/tapas/snacks. Instead, it seemed more like a place where locals did their food shopping. We picked up some strawberries, so this is a good spot to pick up some fresh fruit. There's also a supermarket downstairs. They sell flowers and plants out front, and while I definitely didn't need any flowers, it was still nice to just look at them. If you're staying nearby and want to experience some local vibes, you should check it out. Otherwise, it's probably not worth going out of your way for if you're not looking to buy groceries. Note - they're closed Sundays.

The market's natural perimeter is dotted with sit-down cafes if you prefer to have table service. Organized, good variety, good atmosphere. It is rare when a market that sells a lot of fish, does not reek of fish from a block away, so it is a very clean market and we saw evidence of constant clean-up. Delicious and impressive spot to grab a few little bites to eat your way through the market, or to bring back with a bottle of wine for your hotel picnic when you're hungry but your tired tourist bod can't bear a full service din din.

The store is a decent size, but it is really hard to get around for example with wheelchairs and prams due to a lack of room, they seem to pack all they can into this store which is really bad for access and overall feel. The staff didn't seem too friendly or helpful, they didn't engage in conversation with me when I entered, despite being the only one in the store at the time, or at the till. This place seemed to be one of the only supermarkets around, after walking around and looking for one and I was pleased to see them sell a cool variety of Lipton Iced Teas including Lychee Green Tea and Tropical, which we don't have in the UK, so because of the limited, cool range of stock in certain areas and the fact it is so hard to find a similar store nearby, I feel it does deserve a higher two star rating.
