We had been looking for a Chicago style pizza in Tampa for a while now. Many pizzerias claim to be similar and Chicago style pizza, but they are not. I can happily say that Cappys is extremely close and is delicious! Located in a strip mall along with a restaurant bar and Mexican restaurant, Cappies is amazing. It may say that it's also Greek food, but I didn't see any Greek food on the menu. It is definitely a family run business. Our server has worked there since the pizzeria opened and is a friend of the family. She did an amazing job serving us, providing information on the menu and just overall, such a great personality. We also met another woman who was the owner. I can't remember their names, but both were very customer service friendly. We made the mistake by getting the pizza bread appetizer. My boyfriend's choice. And honestly, that could've filled us up just with that. We did get the deep dish and, split our toppings in half pepperoni and sausage and mushroom. The crust was nice and thick without being crispy. The marinara sauce which is homemade was again amazing and I asked for extra so I could dip my pizza crust in it! Honestly cappys is glazed, the pizza was surprisingly thin and kinda salty but it wasn't bad, more of a 7/10, although the service was great, we sat ourselves and was served with drinks and menus in less than two minutes, if it is family run the prices are reasonable but kinda high for the quality, would return for the interior though, it was pretty cool inside with a whole bunch of pictures and state license plates. Really solid little pizza joint here! The pizza servings are pretty large and worth the price. And the pizza itself tastes super fresh and straight out of the oven. Maybe there's a bit too much grease on the pizza at times, but I just wipe it off with a napkin and I'm all good. That's really my only complaint, the grease can be a bit much. Ordered a deep dish sausage and mushroom pizza and a hawaiian calzone. The deep dish pizza crust was over-cooked - hard to slice and too crusty; the toppings weren't very generous (skimpy); the sauce was too salty. The calzone crust was too soft (underbaked?) and the stuffing also seemed skimpy. After baking a bit more at home, the crust notably improved. If you haven't had a Chicago Deep Dish pizza before, you are not a true pizza fan! Stuffed pizza with all of your favorite sides, inside out with the cheese in the middle and sauce on top. The best ones you eat with a fork and knife, and the crust is thick and flaky enough to pick up like a breadstick on its own! We ordered 3 takeout pizza's from different Pizza shops in the area . unfortunately Cappys was the one liked least by all . Pizza was dry and overdone . Less taste than the others . If you want your food prepared in an unsanitary manner Cappy's is the place for you. I ordered a pizza to go, and waited at the little bar area. They were short staffed I guess but that's no excuse for not following proper hygiene with the food prep. A customer came up and paid cash and the "cook" took the order and handled cash... then walked over to continue make pizzas. The owners might post a response that I'm lying or exaggerating, but I assure you I would not waste my time and I'm just trying to help people. If they don't wash their hands after touching money what else do they not wash hands after doing? I was watching the cook the whole time hoping he would stop a minute to wash his hands but he didn't. I watched him walking back to the pizza station and simply requested he wash his hands before making my pizza. His response was "I already made your pizza" and he turned and proceeded to with bare/dirty hands put cheese on pizzas and then prepping the pizza dough for the poor unsuspecting patrons still waiting. At this point the server/manager came up to the register but she did not interject or react at all. Looks like this is an everyday occurrence at Cappys. To review the pizza... it was quite basic. For Friday afternoon, we were feeling and instead of a full food we were looking for a place to have quick food. So, I searched near me and saw Cappy's Pizza which was near our place. So, I checked out the menu of Cappy's Pizza. From the menu I decided to order Vegetarian Pizza with mushrooms through a call. The pizza was ready in 15 minutes and I went to Cappy's Pizza to pick-up my order. When I entered the restaurant, I was surprised to see amazing ambiance of the restaurant and it was beautifully decorated giving the look for a place to have pizza and beer. I also saw that they offer different drinks along with different beers. From beer I selected Funky Buddha Florida Wheat Beer. I picked-up my order along with the beer. SLOPPY MESS OF A PIZZA!!! Worst deep dish pizza I have ever picked up!! When we opened the box the sauce was so watery that it sloshed to one side of the pizza and we brought it back on a even car seat and a table before we opened it up so it came out of the restaurant like that! The watery sauce soaked the breading so it was literally folding over instead of being hard and crunchy like a deep dish should be!! We had to use the fork in the picture to make the sauce even all over. It was absolutely horrible and it tasted poorly made like they tried to make the sauce as quickly and cheaply as possible. Do yourself a favor and don't come here ever again!!! I have NEVER had such horrible pizza! UPDATE: Called management to get a refund and hopefully come to an understanding because they took our money and gave us a horrible product that we had to throw away due to how inedible it is. Not only were they extremely defensive and rude, they also blocked my original number so that I couldn't contact them. They refused to give me a refund stating that I "blasted them" on social media and that they know their pizza and this was never an issue before. The many 1 star reviews would prove otherwise. So not only do they have horrendus pizza, their management is completely unqualified to be in their position. I have never had such HORRIBLE customer service as well as horrible deep dish pizza. If you want them to steal your money and disregard your complaints while serving you pizza that they threw together as quickly as possible this is the place for you. read more

I was headed south from Wesley Chapel. I could've been at my home Cappy's in 20 minutes. But then I remembered from Yelp-there was another Cappy's on the way. I could be there in seven. Tucked into a popular plaza off Bruce B Downs Blvd in the Tampa Palms area, there's tons of parking and a small dining area out front, under the Cappy's oval sign, that calls me home again and again. At first glance, this location is quaintly small. But behind the three rows of tall wooden booths, are two large, tile-topped tables and a small bar counter... and the takeout counter is behind all of that. You don't feel cramped at all-just cozy, comfy and charmed-by all the retro memorabilia on the walls. But you didn't come here to read about the legroom and decor. Let's talk food. Cappy's has two styles of pizza: New York (thin crust) and Chicago (deep dish). I'm a thin crust girl-and always order the NY pepperoni with light sauce. This if the fourth Cappy's I've been to and they always get the sauce ratio spot-on. The pizza is consistently delicious. I've had the cheese bread before and it's total yum, too. But this night, I tried the Greek salad. Ohhhh, there you are Nirvana! It is divine! I ordered the small-which would easily feed three. I took one bite and then almost stuck my head in the bowl. The Greek dressing is tangy and sweet at the same time... light... it dresses up the salad, not drowns it. I don't even like dressing-but I love this! I will never neglect to order their Greek salad again! In a town/area that boasts a lot of really good Greek salads-this is top 10 stuff. So is Savannah, my server. I just have to say the pizza here is really good. The best thing I had though was the Greek salad. I am a very particular person when it comes to potato salad so I was kind of suspicious of the Greek salad but this was the BEST POTATO SALAD I have ever had in my entire life. This was my first time trying this pizza shop! I cannot believe I haven't been, especially since I live so close. We actually came here since Fat Rabbit was full. We were so glad we did! We were greeted very soon. Ordered salad right away since I was hangry. Salad came out right away served "Olive Garden" style in a large bowl. Definitely the freshest veggies in town. I could have just ate more and more of that! Then the pizza came. Wow! This pizza was perfect in every manner. I ordered the veggie pizza because I'd prefer veggies over meat on pizza anyday. My husband is the opposite so he ordered a pepperoni Stromboli. He said it was amazing as well. The crust is perfectly soft with an ever so perfect crisp on ends, the sauce was savory and not over spiced. I'm super picky about spices. We can not wait to return and try everything else. The deep dish will certainly be on the agenda very soon. The ONLY thing my husband (who is from Philly) wanted meatball and pepperoni pie (as he would say). They did not offer meatball. Cappy's makes a decent New York Style Pizza. On a a recent visit I ordered a large NY Pizza with Pepperoni (my favorite) and a small greek salad. I was promised an order in 25 minutes, and sure enough, my pizza came out piping hot in 22 minutes. However, the counter person (who was very nice) then ran to make my salad herself. I brought the items home, and had 2 slices of pizza along with about half of the salad. The pizza had a good crust, mildly spicy Pepperoni and pretty good cheese. The sauce was fine, not too sweet, not too salty, and tasted reasonably fresh. The salad was fine, nothing seemed amiss. The next morning I had terrible stomach cramps and had diarrhea for over 2 hours. The last time I had this type of reaction it was to bad salad, so my conclusion here is the same. I checked the unused salad (which was placed in a sealed container and refrigerated immediately after being brought home) and it was brown, brown, brown). I can only conclude that the lettuce was just on the edge of going bad when it was served. I don't like sharing experiences like this, because things are tough for the restaurant and bar business these days. I lost an entire day of my weekend to bad salad and that is time I can't get back. Here's what I don't know: 1) did the counter person wash her hands or use gloves when she made my salad? 2) was the salad properly washed? 3) was the salad checked by a manager or kitchen supervisor for freshness? Honestly, I don't know, but if anyone from Cappy's is paying attention, maybe take a look at this process and update your procedures. Your homepage on yelp has a big picture of salad! Frankly I wish I could go back here and order pizza again, but after the experience I had, well, I won't again. In fact, I threw out the rest of my pizza too (which I had frozen for reheating later in the week) because, I just don't know now. Stopped in Cappy's because of the reviews and I am new to Tampa so trying places out. I started out with a water and then ordered a Cappy deep dish chicago medium pizza. Menu says expect a wait of about 30 minutes and thats is about what it was. Pizza was good and I had plenty to take home. Others have commented how the service was great - mine was so-so. Once I sat down, the waiter got me my water and took my pizza order. The place wasn't very busy at all - maybe 3-4 booths, he brought me my pizza when it was ready but that was about it. Never asked if I needed a water refill or if I wanted something different to drink - which I was considering . Location, small pizza joint dining with dark lighting, presentation of food and service was fantastic!!! However, coming from my own taste test, because I needed to kill the craving of Chicago style deep dish pizza, there is still no pizza place down in Florida that can match the authentic taste of a buttery crusted brick oven made pizza with a mouth watering tomato sauce with a tad of sweetness and no bitterness whatsoever. Best local pizza chain in Tampa. And best pizza I have had in the area since I have moved here in four years. We have been to the one in St. Pete a few years ago. When I heard there was a Cappy's closer to home in Tampa Palms, I was very excited. I called them yesterday and asked if they were dog friendly. They were nice enough to let me know that they just became dog friendly just for Mocha just last week. Well, really not for him, but we were there in perfect timing. Our waitress Jenna was very sweet, and helpful. She brought Mocha a little serving of Mozzarella cheese. He said it was way better than a bowl of water. Mocha our dog loved the place and will now tell all his doggie friends at the playground. Us, we loved our deep dish pizza. We ordered the Cappy's large deep dish with sausage, ham, green peppers. It came out in about 25 minutes. The sauce had nice chunks of diced tomatoes. The crust was tasty as well. We will be back for sure. Ran here today for lunch while waiting for an appt nearby. For starters, I've been here for dinner a lot and get the deep dish, which takes awhile. I was hoping their lunch service would be faster and for the most part, it was. The lunch special is 2 slices for $6something; or a calzone. Came out pretty quickly and, as always, tasted great. I will say, however, there only appeared to be 1 server for the entire place at lunch and it filled up quickly. Took a little bit of a wait for him to get our orders, but after that okay. Anyway, big whopping slices of pizza. And my sausage calzone was tasty. Oozing with cheese and baked perfectly brown. The sausage was a little bland, but otherwise good. Now ... as for deep dish. When I go there in the evenings, I always get a pepperoni deep dish. SO good. Now, I'm originally from the Chicago suburbs, and while this isn't exactly the way deep dish is served at home, it gets the job done when you have a craving for it. And their salads are SO good here. Cappy's is the real mvp... why have a pizza rivalry when they bring both Chicago and New York style pizzas together! They have truly mastered both styles and we get one of each every time we visit. The deep dish is so good and the ingredients always taste fresh. The New York style is cheesy and the slices are huge. I've had the Greek salad and garlic knots which are also delicious. This is one of few remaining pizza spots that you can eat AT the restaurant and feel at home. I love the decor inside and that they have trivial pursuit cards on the table. Yum yum yum! It's been five years or so since I've ordered from Cappy's and I wasn't disappointed! Friendly staff and clean restaurant! Due to the restrictions they're seating area was closed, but it didn't stop them from making delicious pizza and cheese bread! Their Chicago style is yummy and definitely worth a splurge every once in a while! I'm a bit spoiled with the large pizza from Five Star so I forget larges elsewhere aren't as big!
