Quite little shop/bar in the state capital. Full wine and liquor shop with a dive bar vibe. Quite and private. No beers on tap but beer by the drink was very reasonably priced compared to other similar establishments. Craft beer for $3 a drink is always a win in my book. On an impromptu trip to Frankfort, we ended up in downtown and at this cute little cellar. Now, I was expecting a little wine shop with a few options. I walked in to a variety of wines from all over the world. And, you could also sit and have a drink at this space! Even better. There were wine and beer options. We had a beer and what was even better was hanging out with the employee working the store and chatting with her. It was so much fun. She had so many stories and recommendations for food in Frankfort. It made me want to come back on an evening where they are having a tasting to just enjoy the ambiance of this location. We stopped by for Wine Tasting during the Summer Concert Series on Friday, August 18th and it was a fantastic experience. They had a great selection of wine that you could buy by the glass or bottle, a small menu of snacks and sandwiches, and all very reasonably priced. We found Capital Cellars almost by accident and were so happy we did. I would recommend it to anyone coming to the Frankfort area. It is located in an up and coming area with lots of shops and restaurants and bars. The store must be a hub for the area. It was bustling but in a good way. Friendly patrons coming in and out. There was a free wine tasting when we were there. The bar is stocked and the staff is super friendly. The store has a great selection of wine. Talk about rude assistance. Stopped in to see what the bourbon tasting bar was like after a long hiatus due to poor service. Decided to give another try. Guess I will go on another hiatus. Not only was bar clogged by smelly hippie types but the bartender didn't fall far from the tree. They use to actually have unusual stuff on the tasting bar. Now it looks like a place where the downtown homeless and single lonely hearted men stop by to reminisce. I would say avoid unless you like crappy one apartment kitchen atmosphere with a crammed in few seats and non bathing clientele. read more

I have visited this place since the day it opened in 2006. While the wine selection is quirky, and the daily specials are odd, low-end wines, the growing bourbon selection is excellent. Service is quite good, but set at the pace of a wine bar, as it should be. Some of the bar tenders are extremely well informed. A tradition appropriate food goes all the way back to the beginning with a qualified chef. We visit every time we come to Frankfort. It is truly a gathering place for friends and acquaintances, and even a place to meet new friends. This is what it is about. For sophosticates from either coast, one must look carefully. Very acceptable selections can be found for very good prices. It also is a cash and carry store, so you can take a selection back to your hotel. Eat well, tip well. read more

Oh my I wish I lived in Frankfort now. We were our way home to Indiana from North Carolina. Wife wanted a salad for dinner and nobody in Frankfort offers salads it seems. It took a while to find this place, well off of I-64, but we are so glad we did. Kate and Annie are the sweetest servers I've had in a long time. You come in and order wine, beer, drinks at the register and find a seat wherever you can. When we said we wanted food Annie handed us a menu and offered up two stools at the bar. We seriously felt like we were crashing Cheers with Norm, Cliff, and the crew at the other end. We were warmly welcomed and had a great experience. What a blast. The menu we found online was out of date and Annie informed us they don't have salads any longer. My wife was near tears. Not really but you know what I mean. Annie went full improv with the ingredients she did have and kept asking my wife "how about almonds?" and "I've got some ..., is that ok?" Long story short my wife had an amazing salad. I had a bacon bourbon jam sandwich on naan bread with Granny Smith apples. OMG. That paired with a handcrafted Bulleit Rye cocktail made the night perfect. Oh and their selection of wines, beer, and liquors and more extensive than most big chain retailers. If they don't have it, they'll get it. What a great place. This is a cute place with friendly employees but could benefit from a little more structure. They advertise serving food but, upon being asked around lunch time on a Friday, the employees reported not knowing if any food was available. Then, we requested two cups of sangria, which was described and advertised on their chalkboard, only to be met with surprise that we were ordering it as it was not ready to serve. To their credit, they were happy to get it from the back and heat it up for us but the whole experience was a little off. That said, the sangria was good and well-priced at $5. It's holiday time so perhaps they're operating with a seasonal staff. If they can work out the kinks, then it might have some real potential! read more

This is my favorite place to get a glass of wine in Frankfort! Never have felt comfortable going to bars, but the Cellar is different. There is a good selection of wine, bourbon and craft beer, and good company. Usually I find a friend to chat and/or sit with, but if not someone I already know, I can make a new friend! The cheese plates are tasty, the paninis hot and the salads are fresh. The Thursday and Friday evening tastings are fun and informative, and the wine classes are educational. read more

I'm down here at least once a week, if not twice. They have a large selection of Kentucky bourbons and wine, as well as domestic and imported wines and spirits. If they don't have you wine, Rachael can order it. They've got a small refrigerated case of microbrews if that's your thing too. They serve both by the glass, or the whole bottle for $2 more than the shelf price. Hungry? They've got a small cafe menu. Try the ham panini, it's my favorite. They have a free wine tasting on Thursday and Friday nights as well from 5-7. It tends to get crowded later in the evening, so come early if you don't want to stand. The service can be hit or miss, depending on how many people are scheduled to work that night. Some nights are better than others, but it's really not the fault of the servers/bartenders. i think they just need to schedule more people for Friday and Saturday night. And there's one guy, an older British dude that works some evenings that can ignore you, even if you've stood there for ten minutes. I'm not the only one who's turned around and walked out. He's a nice guy, really, but damn it, I don't have all night. There's definitely a crowd of "regulars" that come here, some every night. You'll get to know these folks on a first name basis, they're great. They've really got something good going for themselves here; they've got a great product, and a great selection of wines. if only they could get a couple of kinks in their service worked out, I'd happily give them 5 stars. Return visit. Two years ago we had an outstanding experience here. Returning hoping to repeat we were totally disappointed. The staff ignored us almost to the point of being rude. They acted like they did not really want us in the place. Then, after being given menus we tried to order drinks and food and were told the kitchen was closed. Why did they give us menus? It seems the people working there have changed. I can not recommend it any longer. We went around the corner to Bourbon on Main where the service is very good (and the kitchen was still open). read more

I stopped here after visiting Buffalo Trace. The owner stopped by and talked for a bit, then came out with a very rare bourbon and offered it to me. This is a bottle that could sell for several times it's retail price, but she sold it to me at retail. I bought several other bottles that were all at fair prices. The bar is also incredible. I wish I had more stores like this near me. Definitely a place to stop by in Frankfort. read more

This is Frankfort's discerning version of "Cheers". No, seriously. Not only did patrons and tenders know all of the customers' names, they even knew their DOGS' names. I'm so impressed.
