Cheesy DJs belong in movies. And maybe other people's weddings. As a bride, the last thing I wanted…read morewas the whole chicken-dance, money-dance, hokey-pokey type of wedding DJ. Lucky for me, Dolce Entertainment was the polar opposite of that. Michelle Gregory, our wedding coordinator and the owner of the Jones Victorian Estate, works with Dolce a lot for her events. Gotta love referrals. So much easier than doing all the legwork yourself. Michelle gave Dolce all my contact info, and Lisa Muir at Dolce emailed me the paperwork a few months before our event. I was a real slacker when it came to getting back to her, but Lisa was very patient. She'd just email me occasionally to check in and ask if I had any questions for her. The planning guide she uses covers all the basics, including: -What genres of music you'd like played. -Which songs you want to use for all the special dances. -Names of all the parents and wedding party members for the introductions. -Which traditions you do and don't want to include in your reception, such as bouquet toss, garter toss, special dances, etc. -Special song requests and dedications. -And, most important of all if you ask me, the songs you absolutely DON'T want played under any circumstances. Lisa also includes a list of their most-requested songs to help give you ideas. (Since a lot of the popular stuff is pretty Top 40-focused, most of it wasn't really our style. But hey, if nothing else it can help you come up with the list of stuff you don't want played.) I finally got the completed planning guide back to Lisa after a couple months, and she didn't mind at all when I asked later on about requesting specific songs for the cake toss, cake cutting and last dance. My husband also spoke to Lisa over the phone just to go over a few things about our music preferences, make sure they had music for the hora, etc. I'm sure we could've scheduled an in-person meeting if we'd wanted to, but we never felt the need. Jon (Lisa's husband, I think) is the DJ part of Dolce Entertainment, and he was exactly what I was looking for in a DJ. He looked a little like a member of the Secret Service in his dark-suit, dark-glasses combo, but that was fine by me. Jon was very friendly and professional and did a great job of playing the type of music we liked throughout our event, including our specific song requests. He never tried to sneak in any country songs or silly theme dances, both of which we'd banned entirely from our playlist. And you know it's gotta be soooo tempting as a wedding DJ to take over and play what you want. All in all, if you're looking for a DJ who gets it and won't try to hijack your event and play obnoxious music you don't like, Dolce Entertainment is definitely worth a look.

We hired Jon Muir of Dolce for our wedding in Newport Beach and we were extremely happy with our…read morechoice, as he exceeded our expectations on the big day. The connection process was quite simple, as we filled out electronic forms about us and about our wedding day plans. We sent them over and then met Jon at a Starbucks about a month before our day. Our wedding planner was lagging in getting back to us so we were very thankful for Jon because he essentially set the timeline for our entire wedding ceremony and reception in that initial meeting. He has set playlists if you are not very particular about your music choices, as well as the ability to customize playlists if you know exactly what you want. He helped steer us in the right direction for appropriate playlists for before the ceremony, during the cocktail hour and during the dinner hour. He was also brilliant in adding in some fun extras to keep the guests entertained throughout the night. I'll save the details for him so as not to spoil them! With approximately 15 years (I believe that's what he told us), he definitely knows how to run the party. He is the timekeeper of the flow of the party and he has great instinct with knowing when to play certain types of music to ensure everyone keeps moving and enjoying themselves throughout the night. Our guests are still raving about what a fun party it was and how awesome the dance party was all night. He even stayed later than planned when we decided to extend the party for a little while longer. sidenote: I found out later that the power had gone out during the ceremony (we were married in a backyard at a private residence) but Jon had backup speakers and system in place and nobody ever knew, except for him and the wedding planner. This is also a kudos to him as this was the first wedding at this location, with multiple levels and he did great with the sound system reaching everyone. He definitely knows his business!

First off, before I get into any of the nitty gritty details, I do have to say that Michael is…read moretalented and has a good eye/vision. That being said, lets get into it. My fiance and I hired Matchstix to film our Vietnamese engagement (dam hoi). It's extremely traditional with a bunch of rituals. We only had 3 weeks to find a videographer and although Matchstix only had 1 yelp review at the time, we liked his videos/portfolio so decided to take a chance. Best of all, his prices were extremely reasonable. We met with Michael and he seemed really accommodating. He asked us questions to try to get to know us. So we signed the invoice and away we went. On the day of the dam hoi, he got to my house early to view my parents place and the neighborhood. He blended in with the events so you barely felt him even though he had a lot of equipment (which was nice). Afterwards, he said he would get us a video in 6-8 weeks. Our dam hoi was on 4/26 and we received a video on 5/21...below the expected time. After viewing it, we noticed that there were a lot of rituals that were left out of the video. Plus, he took the time to videotape us while asking us questions about one another so we were surprised they weren't in there. We asked for him to put the more of the rituals in, some of the interviews, and take out some scenes my parents weren't happy with. When we first met with him, he told us that we could have a first pass edit. When we gave him our desired revisions, he wanted to charge us the same amount we hired him for...which completely defeated the purpose of hiring someone for cheap. He said our desired edits were "too much" for what would be included in a first pass edit. We asked him if he could do whatever he could without getting paid more. We also asked if he could provide the raw files and surprise surprise, he wanted to charge us for the same amount we initially hired him for. He stated that the edits to the video would take 2 weeks. This was on 6/9....he got back to us on 7/20, WELL over his initial timeline. The edited video had a lot more of the rituals, still no interviews, but he took out a key scene where my mother-in-law gives me a gift. We asked him to put it back in, which he did but not sequentially with how the events unfolded that day. Which is funny because in the initial first cut, he put it in exactly where it was supposed to be. At this point I was over it and decided not to go back and forth with him. BOTTOM LINE: if you do decide to hire Matchstix because you like his style, do so but make sure you have a VERY VERY detailed list of all the things you want included, especially if there are a lot of rituals. In the contract, make sure you lay out EXACTLY what you're getting in his quoted price, but don't be surprised when he tries to charge for anything else you ask for. Oh wells, you live and learn.
