But the internet told me I needed compost, so I was determined to get compost. Unfortunately, the internet is very vague about how one gets compost, unless you're making your own. Then the internet is happy to give you all sorts of advice. Thus I found myself googling, "where to get compost on cape cod." Brewster Sand & Gravel was the first choice. Once I got on B&G's website, I got a better idea of what I was looking for. Plus they have nifty yardage calculators so you can figure out exactly how much of whatever you need. I compared them to other sites and the prices looked reasonable, so I made up a little list of questions and prepared to make first compost contact. There is a physical building somewhere, but they're in Eastham (why does it say Brewster? Why???) so I just called. I left a message and got a call back within the hour. The girl on the phone (Amber maybe?) was SO awesomely nice. She made me feel comfortable, she answered all my questions, she was upfront. Honestly, after one phone conversation I knew I was going to buy from them, based on customer service alone. I ended up ordering some obscene amount of compost for delivery (I was splitting with a friend. Delivery fee was $40). Nice phone woman and I figured out the date and time that best worked for me and sure enough, that Saturday an adorable little construction truck came lumbering up the Harwich Community Garden path, loaded with a pile of beautiful dark screened leaf 'post. (can I call it 'post? does that make me sound cool?) The delivery guy was awesome too. He was so friendly, especially considering I had reached my neurotic threshold and was basically staring wide-eyed and shrugging when he asked where to dump it. He even split the load so half of it got dumped near my garden plot, then the rest was dumped near my friend's plot! I offered him a tip and he turned it down, saying, "You use that money to buy yourself some nice plants." Omg. Like I said, the compost they sent is rich and dark and beautiful. It spread wonderfully and my plants are loving it. I've already recommended B&G to several people at the Community Garden... bcs they saw my compost and asked about it!

It's not particularly easy to find tucked down a dirt driveway in Rock Harbor. But once you make it down the driveway it's a pretty good sized place. However, the place seemed to lose its luster after the COVID pandemic. On one visit, I had a run-in with an officious staff member who may just have been having a bad day. This year, it we could not find what we wanted, and much of the annual stock was looking stressed. Tried again two weeks later and bought nothing. In the end, we found what we wanted at Friend's Marketplace, Agway and Bayberry Gardens. The latter is in Truro, has interesting plant varieties and a terrific staff. Hoping The Farm returns to its former glory next year.

They run an incredible business & we always find everything we need here! This past summer, my mom purchased a big lot of hydrangeas, lilacs, and ornamental grasses from Green Spot for our front yard. She also got some great advice from Joe about how to best take care of her hydrangeas - he has great tips & tricks! This winter, my mom and I purchased a bunch of holiday decor. We got wreaths, kissing balls, basket arrangements, a mini faux Christmas tree, and hand-tied bows. It was truly a one stop shop for all of our Christmas decor! One of the owners, Jim, helped me carry our goodies out to our car - it was such a pleasure to meet him and have a nice little chat :) We will continue to be frequent customers at Green Spot!

Went to the nursery to discuss ; the first Lady told us we probably did not take good care of it . The staff are very knowledgeable. We participated in two classes, learning a lot and getting answers to several perplexing garden issues. I went to the counter to ask to buy it even though I knew it was not an item of their inventory. I was asked to show the salesperson where I found it, and as I showed her she said, "oh just take it, it's not worth anything and we have plenty of them, just take it!" That kind of understanding of the customer and her needs is the most valuable skill ! I shall be back tomorrow and from now on and I will be BuYIiNG!
