A beautiful Cathedral within the medieval gates of Canterbury. Sadly, the Cathedral exterior was under scaffolding, but the interior is beautiful. So much history and the architecture is stunning. Hubby and I enjoyed our visit. The ticket office accepts American Express, but the gift shop does not.

One thing I wanted to see back in 2011 when I visited England was where Thomas Beckett was mercelessly cut down in the 10th Century. Mind you, when I asked them if there happened to be memorial to him there was a rather sharp reply that thanks to Henry VIII, Becket's remains were removed from the Cathedral, the memorial taken down, and then hidden nobody basically knows where. However, they will point you to the room (which is rather non-descript by the way) where he was killed. As for the Cathedral, well, it's pretty impressive, but then again it does happen to be the seat of the primate of the Church of England (though the Queen happens to be the head). It's pretty large, and quite impressive, and also you are actually allowed to take photos inside (or at least you were the last time I was there).

This is one of the most important cathedrals in the UK. Canterbury is sixty some miles west of London, and it takes about an hour by direct train from the San Pancras Station. The church dates back to 597 AD when Augustine of Canterbury established the English church. Much has happened in the cathedral in its long history, and it is definitely worthwhile to visit it. I also saw significant wear and tear inside and outside of the cathedral. There was apparently maintenance work underway, which the cathedral really needs.

You cannot go to Canterbury and not see the Cathedral. There is so much history on these grounds - be sure to give yourself enough time to see and experience it all! The price is worth it if you take your time. Even with the renovations going on (which are important!), it was still a breathtaking time. Highly recommend.

Although the Cathedreal is a little bit pricey this is definitely an amazing sight to see! The architecture is simply stunning and it is possible to see The Martyrdom where St. Thomas à Becket was killed by four knights and therefor martyred. It is amazing, haunting, beautiful and somehow I was drawn to this cathedral and the area around it.

A stunning cathedral...although the city of Canterbury itself is a mixed bag, the Cathedral is worth the hassle. Second only to Westminster Abbey in stunning interior beauty.

As you amble your way along St. George's Street on your way to Canterbury Cathedral, it would…read morebehoove to stop and drink in glorious St. George's Tower. It has storied and surprising history, most interesting being the fact that it is the last remaining vestige of the medieval church of St George the Martyr. The church, documented as far back as 1122 (!), is best known as the place where playwright Christopher Marlowe (Doctor Faustus) was baptized. It survived more than EIGHT centuries, but couldn't survive those damned Germans and their "Baedecker Blitz" bombing raid of Canterbury on June 1, 1942. If what remains is any indication, the church must have been a site to see. If you like Gothic architecture, you've come to the right place: There's a pointed archway (ogival), crenellated parapet (defensive structure at the roof-level), and two-light windows of the Gothic "perpendicular" style. Another great feature is the Clock Tower. While most clock towers are centerpieces near the top and inside a church, St. George's clock juts out over St. George's Street. Make sure to look closely, as you'll see a gargoyle on the underside. Also go underneath the tower to see its fascinating underside! When I've been there (always in the summer), Caffè Nero has had tables out in the small plaza right by the Tower. It's a great place to stop, check out the tower, and have a snack and drink before taking on Canterbury's grand Cathedral.
