I used to use videos on YouTube for guided meditations, but while they were great, I often found…read moremyself falling asleep midway through, listening to the relaxing voice of the speaker. I overheard a colleague mention that he took meditation at a local Buddhist Vihara (or temple, as he explained to me), and he loved them. I nervously decided to give it a try. I went on a Wednesday night, which is a one hour silent meditation, and honestly, if the monks hadn't been so friendly and welcoming, I don't know if I would have gone back. I barely made it 10 minutes before my legs fell asleep and I was bored. The monks made time to talk afterwards, and when I explained how poorly I did, they immediately suggested I return on another night when they offered 30 minute guided meditations, followed by question and answer sessions. I returned the following Tuesday, and have been going ever since! The guided meditations are perfect for someone who struggles to stay focused. On top of that, being able to ask any questions you want is so useful. Recently, I also took their Buddhism Level I course. It offered an extensive overview of how their "type" (I don't know what other word to use here) of Buddhism came about, as well as the opportunity to ask more in-depth questions. The monks are wonderful, warm, and welcoming. I love going there honestly, because it makes me feel at peace. I highly recommend checking it out if you're interested in meditation. They also offer a weekly yoga class! A few tips: - Take off your shoes when entering, but if it is cold, you can put them inside the front door. You can just walk right in, no need to knock! -Yes, it is a house. The house was donated, I believe, and the monks live there, but the front room has been "converted" to a temple space -The temple runs on donations. There are envelopes in the front right corner of the room. I usually just pop my money in one of those and leave it on the table. If you attend a meditation or class, please give a small donation. They rarely mention it or ask, so I am doing it. - Don't be afraid to ask questions. I once asked if they could eat pizza, and after laughing, they told me that yes, they can eat pizza! I love this place. No matter how bad my day or week has been, I leave here with a sense of peace and calmness, and I encourage everyone I know to check it out.

My experience with the teachers and students was quite nice. However, Racheal the owner of the…read morestudio is quite arrogant. She seems to think that she is super smart but she is not. After I paid for a month of unlimited classes Racheal came in on the day I would have taken my fifth lesson and in front of the class asked me if I was vaccinated. I didn't feel it was an appropriate question yet I told her the truth. I am not vaccinated. That was not something that I was asked when I joined. If unvaccinated folk were not welcome I should have been vetted much more thoroughly. I respect a business's right to determine if a mask is required or whether or not unvaccinated people are welcome. In my opinion each individual should have the right to determine whether or not they wish to be vaccinated. Miss mighty Racheal had the audacity to verbally berate me. She went on to verbally castigate me for not being vaccinated in a global pandemic. She refused to give me a refund and threatened me with the FBI and bragged about what a powerful attorney she is. Racheal does not have a Yoga spirit. She is not a smart business person. This would be a nice place if it were not for her. People of color beware-you may not be welcome here.

So I was hesitant to try a new studio since it seems every studio in the area is heated, competitive, fast, and not friendly for beginners/ those with injuries/disabilities. Wow, I was blown away by 3rd street!! This place is the real deal. Friendly, knowledgeable instructors. Calm atmosphere. Plenty of pose variations and prop modifications. Instructors teach beyond the poses and explain history of yoga, breathing exercises, etc. I love the quirky old building, super quaint. There's a reason this place has been in business for 20 years! Can't wait to go back.
