When we discussed the overly hyperactive and sometimes nippy behavior of our Presa Canario, Magnus, with our vet, she highly recommended we contact Karen, so that's what we did, and we are sooo happy we did so! Karen has a deep understanding of dog behavior, and she has a full toolkit of tips, tricks and techniques to help owners learn how to be an advocate for their dog, and how to work with and shape the behaviors of their dogs in ways that causes minimal stress to the dog while maximizing the results. Whenever we'd describe a behavior to Karen, she could quickly analyze and explain what was going on in Magnus' head. Furthermore, she would instruct us on exactly how to handle the situation in great detail, and she would follow this up with drills to ingrain the right reaction by the owner with very close attention to the fundamentals of dog-to-human communication: voice inflection, pitch and tone; body language, movement, hand placement, grip; cues to reward and commands to help enact a particular behavior. Karen even has an unending offering of tips and tricks to wear your pup out, redirect its attention, etc., even how to teach your furry friend how to disentangle itself from its leash - she taught Magnus in less than five minutes, which was pretty incredible! Karen was highly recommend to me by my veterinarian because I was having a serious issue with one of my small dogs attacking my other dog and hurting her!! So glad we found Karen! I love the fact that she can come to your house for private lessons and train your dog in your own environment. The price for a private lesson is worth every penny and in my opinion is very reasonable. She gives you a discount if you buy 10 lessons at a time. She teaches you how to train your dog and tells you why your dog is behaving the way he does and what is triggering certain behavior. We have a Corgi that is very fearful of loud noises and gets upset when we my husband or I leaves the house. He exhibits aggressive behavior because of this fear and Karen has helped us to calm him down by showing us how to refocus his energy. We originally called Karen because I was expecting our first child and was afraid that our dog would be upset about the addition to our family. Our dog was used to being an "only child" and would be getting way less attention with a new baby in our home. Karen showed us how to prepare to introduce our daughter to our dog. Before she was born we practiced swaddling a teddy bear and pretending it was a baby to train our dog to get used to us holding a baby in our arms. Karen from Matters of the Canine Kind came to our home to work with our 11 month old Pomeranian. Our mission was to get her to listen to commands for "quiet" and "no jumping." We are planning a trip to the mainland and our pom will be traveling in the cabin with us. Therefore, we want to ensure she will be a good traveler and not disturb other flyers. After one lesson we could already see the difference in her manners and how we could take command of the situation.
