Alas, those days have passed, but there's still plenty of enjoyment to be found here. I'm a sucker for history and stepping into Effra Social is to step back a few generations. Seeing as I've only been once, and then got only the briefest of briefings on the backstory of the place by two of my friends who live near it, I don't know much, other than it used to be a social club of sorts way back in the day before being shuttered for a long stretch until being reopened in its present form. And its present form? Funky and fun. The building sits back from the road a bit and has a certain element of privacy to it, and the interior is bigger than you'd expect. We opted for a few pints and I ordered dinner - a vegetarian pasta dish that did the palette right. There is apparently a dedicated restaurant section to it that I didn't check out, as the staff were cool and let me enjoy my meal in the bar area, and I could see this place clearing out a dancefloor and having a go of it when the mood strikes. Casual vibe, no pretension, cool staff, good food, unique space. All good things, all good things. Definitely a worthwhile addition to an already fun neighborhood. Will be returning.

As we arrived, the bouncer declared I was under arrest for being too beautiful. I'm not gonna lie - it was a good line to hear! So I played along and found myself being led into the building by him holding my wrists together, joking about how awkward this was going to get when one of us needed the toilet. It was about to go from entertaining to plain weird when I mentioned it was my first time (at the bar), so he thankfully released my wrists and insisted on giving me the full tour (with my friend, bless her, trailing along behind us). The good thing was this meant we got to nose about in the private room near the front that had a bday party in full swing, and also the little resturant at the back which we wouldn't have spotted on our own I don't think! He left us to it in the bar area, which was quite surreal. It looked exactly like my old primary school hall - wood panelled floors with a maroon-curtained stage at the far end where the DJ appeared later on. It felt like stepping back in time into a proper working men's social club, except for the bunting hanging across the room with music manuscripts artfully pegged to it. My friend and I had a good giggle about the bouncer then took our g&t's out to the busy picnic tables in the front courtyard to wait for the others, as it was an unusually warm evening. Drinks are very reasonably priced and looked like a nice craft beer selection; my first g&t was a bit weak but they soon got stronger (or I got less able to tell?!). The place is nothing special or flashy - in fact, it's the complete opposite. We had a great view of some wheely bins and my bouncer fan enticing other customers in from the street. Elsewhere you wouldn't touch this place with a barge pole, but here it inexplicably just works. Every table was being used and it's the buzz of the crowd that turns it from just a sad, badly-tarmacked driveway into a busy hangout spot for south London hipster types. Come for a hassle-free catch up with your mates if you're in the area - this place is about as unpretentious as it gets! (Extra cautionary tale: not to be confused with the Effra Tavern where 2 of our mates turned up, but luckily is only 10mins walk away)

I have definitely had an increased appreciation for British food since I hadn't tried British pub food! I got Pimm's Cup and a meat pie! My Pimm's was delicious and refreshing on that summer day (it was summer day when I visited London)! The meat pie was perfectly cooked with the sauce and the portion was more than enough! It was served with roasted veggies and fries. Overall, great service, ambiance (since it was during the World Cup), and great food! I love this area and will definitely be back in the future!

Still I soldiered on, telling myself that trying something new would be an adventure! Imagine my delight (and mild dismay) when a gorgeous plate of lightly battered fish and chips arrived alongside a jacket potato topped generously with cheese and spicy chili. I dug in to discover that whatever's going on in the kitchen here is really right. And with the tariff £12 for us both, certainly good value too. The White Bear reminded me today not to judge a book by its cover, or in this case, a pub by its funk or lack of patrons.

The ambiance is part pub and part american power lunch, with tables adequately spaced and wood through-out. Beers on tap were diverse and local and served in pewter mugs, but I stuck with a pint of Stella. The place was quite empty when we arrived, but by 1:15 pm it was at capacity. ( lunch in U.K. usually starts at 1 pm). I started with the Shrimp cocktail, which was a mixture of U.S. and U.K. delivery with 3 fairly large shrimp (prawns) sitting on the edge accompanied with a small pile of smaller shrimp inside the ramikin served over micro greens and U.K. shrimp sauce ( more akin to thousand island dressing). All tasted fresh and accompanied by 1/2 lemon. My counterpart had the sauteed mushrooms that looked and tasted delightful. For main course (entree), I had the 300 gram ribeye steak with chips (steak fries). The steak (ordered medium) arrived more medium well, in part due that it was quite thin (from. U.S. standards), thus difficult to cook to a medium. The taste of the meat was solid and nicely aged. The chips were crisp and had a delightful taste. My counterpart had the rump steak that was fairly tender and cooked a perfect medium. Two cappuccinno's topped the meal. With 3 pints of stella, appetizers, mains, and coffee the bill was $80 pound sterling about $125 USD. Recommend the eatery for any business occassion or happy hour.
