Revised review - this is still the best consignment shop in Ottawa. Very nice clothes.read more

I stopped by The Clothes Tree for the first time recently. Consignment shops are always a fun…read moreplace to poke around because you never know what you're going to find. The Clothes Tree has clothing, shoes, handbags, jewellery and also cosmetics. Not many places take cosmetics for hygienic reasons, but when I think about it I've accumulated tons of "gift with purchase" items that I've never touched, so it does make good sense. Now The Clothes Tree touts itself as a "high end" consignment boutique, but I saw several low end items like Mossimo pieces. Mossimo is a brand that is sold at Target. And I mean regularly sold at Target, not like when they do those collaborations with high end designers (e.g. 3.1 Philip Lim for Target, or Missoni for Target) where the collections sell out immediately. I would not even consider those pieces "high end" but I would let those slide. I did see a few Tory Burch and Elie Tahari pieces. So yes, they do have more expensive brands, but by and large I feel that most pieces that they carry are mid-range. I will say that I was happy to see some Muriel Dombret pieces (yay for Canadian designers, and an Ottawa designer at that!), I found the styles a little older/more mature than my tastes, but it may be that they are targeting baby boomers. I also found prices a little on the higher side for the mid-range items. I saw some Banana Republic and Eddie Bauer pieces that while priced much lower than the original retail price, they were comparable to the sale prices at the end of the season. That being said, I am a bargain hunter extraordinaire and being a dress size 0-2, I usually make out like a bandit at the end of season clearance sales. So my price standards may be different than people of more popular sizes. Items were nicely arranged and the place did not smell musty. The store is in the Blue Heron Mall. The parking lot is a bit difficult to get in and out of (especially when Bank St is busy and there are many cars in the lot), but there's free parking.

NOBODY has reviewed this shop yet? WHY NOT?! Sure, I'll take that honour! Thanks!…read more I *LOVE* Ricki's! I am really glad they are still around; two shops that I have been to recently - the other is at Carlingwood Mall. I would give this outlet 4.5 stars if only I could. The staff was helpful and attentive without overdoing it. What got me coming to this neck of the woods for this visit was their advertised specials on coats: half price! But I learned something (thanks to an informative clerk!): Ricki's tests out new designs by having "Guest Designers" promote items through email / text ads / online shopping. What they are really doing is testing the market for certain designs, colours, whatever: what do customers like? If they like an item in burgundy but it doesn't tend to fit (ie: too snug or big) then Ricki's will let the designer know that. Items that have the Ricki's label are designed for the shops to fit their specifications for sizing. But, they still honour their return policy - so if you order something on line but it doesn't fit to your satisfaction, you can return it to a shop for a refund. This is where I cashed in: rather than buying it (and it takes time to be delivered to you), I went to a shop that happened to have one in stock. You can find this out on the internet. My shopping habits have changed because of the internet! Oh wait - I just said that in Yelp! No kidding by habits have changed!!! (For the better, I hope!) So, I got a coat at half price. It wasn't the one I thought it would be, but it fits, it's new, and it's very warm for these cold wintry days. Funny: winter isn't officially here 'til next week... Stay warm, people! I will continue to shop at Ricki's.
