I'm just thankful there was something. Could there be more stores? Sure. But is the community large…read moreenough to support it when it isn't tourist season? Dunno. There was a sports store to get winter or hiking gear that you forgot. I can't remember though if there were swim suits. There was a cute gift store with some stuff for the kiddies, books, etc. There was a more kitschy souvenir shop with all your souvenir doodads. There was also a rock store with some fossils and jewelry. The mall is run by the local tribe, so at least you know you aren't supporting some faceless conglomerate. And a lot of the items sold at the stores were by locals, which I think is more unique. There was also a post office, a liquor store, a grocery store, a boba cafe (of all things), and a normal cafe. Behind the cafe are some picnic tables you can sit at. There were also a lot of tour buses coming in. If you aren't on one of these buses, be prepared for the crowds. If you're on one of these buses, I hope this isn't your final stop - I hope you have a stop at Lake Louise. I didn't really understand the effort of the tour bus groups to take photos of the river by the parking lot. Or of the parking lot. There will be better photo opportunities, I promise.

On the road to Lake Louise is this shopping mall. Samson Mall has a restaurant, grocery store and…read morelittle shops and is surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges. It also has a visitor center that will provide information if you don't know your way around the area. It is a nice place to stop for supplies, food or gifts. Unfortunately, the power went out while we were here and all of the stores had to temporarily close up. But it is a nice place to stop while in the park if you need anything.

Maybe not at first but eventually more and more people will go there to purchase most of their grocery and other needs. Why? Because they charge so much less.. the thing we don't realize as consumers is that eventually when the Walmarts of the world destroy all small business ( and that is most certainly coming ), they will hold a monopoly on the industries they put out of business thereby being able to set whatever prices they want.. I saw this first hand in an area that was once a beautiful town with Mom & Pop stores for decades handling all of the towns business.. eventually there was no more Mom & Pop, and only the Walmarts... when that happened their prices spiked to what you could once get at the mom & Pop location. Save a few dollars today, lose tons later and your health and the livelihood of others and eventually the next generation will be left will a great big pile of crap and debt. But that's the human way isn't it? Me me me, I want to save save save and to hell with everyone who follows after me. Put this place out of business! Boycott it, don't go there, drive farther , deal with a little discomfort.. it builds character and oh yeah, mom & pop actually care about you.

If you're looking for ammolite (which is moving to become recognized as the official gemstone of…read moreAlberta), Rock Paper Silver has the best selection in terms of small "stone" samples, jewelry, and "rock" pieces. In general, they have nearly everything relating to stones, crystals, and fossils in a variety that stretches from the regular souvenir stuff (wire-wrapped crystal necklaces and bead bracelets) to jewelry-grade stones and actually jewelry to decorative house pieces, statues, and wall pieces. The storefront is smaller than the actual store, which stretches REALLY far back. Very well organized with clearly marked sections for the different kinds of stones. Employees are extremely helpful and knowledgeable and were pretty open about admitting to their stuff being a bit upmarked. They even recommended other locations for some possibly cheaper, specific types of fossils. Not only were they very informative when we asked about specific crystals and rocks, and this included where they'd gotten everything. Canada is famous for being a rockhound's dream, with its amazing and numerous mineral and precious metal deposits. However, Rock Paper Silver also provides specific other kinds of crystals from other parts of the world. There are a number of souvenir and rock/crystal/fossils places along Banff Avenue. However, Rock Paper silver is right at the center of the main cluster of restaurants and gift shops. The closest parking (besides the minimal street parking when the road isn't blocked off) is the Bear Street Parking Lot, an open parking lot that (like the street parking) has an hourly rate of $3 per hour from 8 AM to 8 PM. If you manage to park there, you can cut through Park Avenue Mall's backdoor (southeast corner of the lot) straight to Banff Avenue. The other main parking area is the Bear Street Parkade. First floor has the same hourly rate as mentioned before with the second floor up completely free. We mostly used the parkade and the only drawback is that so do most people. Be sure to check the counter they have at the entrance for if there are still spaces available on the upper floors. Would absolutely recommend dropping by here to browse. Especially if you're interested in rocks, crystals, and fossils. While there are a lot of pricier items, there are a variety of other more affordable products that make for a great unique souvenir!

The polite staff are quick to serve. I am a gemologist, so I know a thing or two about rocks, gems and jewelry. I am very impressed with their abundance of product knowledge. Really amazing. It's pretty expensive, but the quality is fabulous. Call me a sucker.
