My smoked pork with two different kinds of dumplings was delicious, but the red cabbage and sauerkraut were not to my liking. I learned why after I saw big vats of it being prepared at an outdoor market. It's sauteed in lard, lots of lard. I can't stand the taste or the thought of eating it, though at this meal I didn't like the taste without knowing why. I suspect that my take on the cabbage is probably different from most people's, so if you are a lard-lover, this would probably be a great meal. It was halfway for me. I'm also not a beer drinker, so I can't review that. But you CAN eat the atmosphere, so go!!

Local restaurant on the town square with delicious Czech eats…read more The casual interior is charming with a single fresh flower and candle on every table. Plastic place mats, tavern themed art, and a rustic olde world feel. It's perfect for an area with uneven stone and brick roadways that are best enjoyed with sturdy shoes or boots. There is also an outdoor patio for al fresco dining when the weather permits. The meal was tasty but the starter bread was just okay. There were two types offered: soft rye and breadsticks. The breadsticks were as dry as a bone and I couldn't bring myself to taste one but the rye bread was soft and delicious. I would have preferred butter with the bread but it turned out that the rye bread was quite tasty on its own. The roasted rabbit with red and white cabbage was delicious and I would order this again. It was #42 on the menu and should have come with a "variety of dumplins" but since I also ordered a side of boiled potatoes, the server must have thought I wanted the potatoes *instead* of the dumplings. Not true. I wanted both! Anyway, the rabbit was perfectly roasted and seasoned. The cabbage was unlike any cabbage I've ever tasted. I actually ordered the side of boiled potatoes expecting some lame cabbage concoction to be staring back at me from my plate. Instead, I saw two thick, gravy-like preparations on my plate: one a rich purpley-red and the other creamy white. They were sweet and favorful and the perfect complement to the roasted rabbit. The svickova was delicious. The bread dumplings were soft and thick and the gravy was scrumptious. Service was just okay and although we spoke English since I hadn't yet downloaded my Google offline Czech translator, both servers did their best to speak to us in English. However, the menu includes 4 translations for every item which is extremely helpful. My one complaint would be my missing "variety of dumplins" and my missing server for nearly the entire meal. I wanted to ask about my dumplings but our server didn't return until we had finished our meals. Overall, I would say that the food was close to 4 stars but the service may have been lacking...possibly due to a language barrier. I'll take the service on the chin since I don't speak Czech and round the entire rating up to 4 stars.

The brewery also has a restaurant which is quite large. Upon entering the dining room is to the left. There are tables along one side of the wall that up a set of stairs to more tables. There are additional tables in the center of the dining room. Heading down a set of stairs leads to the main bar. The lighting fixtures are rather creative and make use of empty Starbrno bottles. The Sauerkraut Soup has a deep red hue studded with drizzles of sour cream. The soup is hearty and rich, and is loaded with pickled cabbage as the name suggests. The soup contains large mushrooms and potatoes, which give the soup an earthy flavor. The soup has a slightly sour finish from the sauerkraut. This was a very good dish, and would gladly order it again. The Caesar Salad contains fresh, crunchy romaine lettuce with homemade croutons and loads of parmesan cheese. The salad contained a generous amount of grilled chicken which was tender. The dressing had hints of anchovy, but there was way too much dressing and overpowered the salad. The Foie Gras was nicely seared on both sides, but since the slices were somewhat thin were slightly overcooked. It retained the rich, creamy, fatty texture however. The grilled apples added some sweetness to combat the richness of the foie. The Goulash contained very tender chunks of beef, but my main complaint was there wasn't much meat served. There was some carb overload as the dish was served with two potato pancakes, which were nice and crunchy, as well as bread. The dish was only lukewarm, so a bit of a disappointment. The sauce was also slightly bitter, which may be from too much paprika? The Beer Sponge-Biscuit Tiramisu was a take on the classic dish, served in a rustic fashion in a beer glass. The tiramisu had a hint of sour cream which gave the dish a slight tang. The dish was very good overall, but was somewhat misleading as the beer could not be discerned. The Pancakes with Lemon Sour Cream were unlike American pancakes. These looked like small hockey pucks, and was more reminiscent of a biscuit, but was a little lighter and fluffier. The cinnamon butter was light but not very spicy. The blueberries were plentiful, but not very sweet. The dish was good, but unusual when thinking of "pancakes". This dessert was not very sweet despite all of the sweet components. Pivovarska Starobrno is maybe the most "commercial" restaurant in Brno outside of KFC, but they do serve some good food at reasonable prices in a nice, relaxed atmosphere.
