A very disappointing experience.
We went on the Grizzly Bear and whale watching experience in late August and found the whole tour to be wildly over-promised and over-priced. Our family has extensive experience of animal safari expeditions, so we fully understand the variability of animal sightings; even with appropriate expectations this was a disappointment.
On the long boat trip from Campbell River we only saw a couple of humpback whales, which is the least you'd hope for in these waters as the local boats coordinate by radio, but the boats cannot approach within a couple of hundred metres so you can't get a great view of the whales. This is understandable from a conservation perspective, but the tour company should make that clear before you book, to manage expectations.
No orcas, no dolphins, no birds, no sea lions, no bears... nothing else.
While on land, we were taken around several viewing points for a couple of hours but didn't see any wildlife at all, let alone grizzlies. They told us at the end that it was likely too hot that day and the bears would be sheltering in the cool of the trees but they could have managed our expectations at the start to avoid the intense disappointment of the group, especially the children who had been so excited.
If you don't see any wildlife, there is nothing else in the experience to help offset that disappointment in the high cost. The boat is very basic, a couple of plastic chairs on the back in the open, otherwise you're inside. The food on offer is very basic: a single, small salmon canape when you land and a cheap wrap and cookie for lunch. No sodas or juices were available, only water. We had to eat lunch sitting on the floor of a very hot dock, there wasn't even a table and chairs offered for the older people or children in the group. There are no facilities apart from a portable toilet.
There is nothing educational about the First Nation tribes who own the land to make you feel like you are connecting with their culture while you're there.
The whole experience felt extremely transactional and binary. If you see bears and/or other wildlife you probably come away very happy with the day and the cost; if you don't, it feels like a lot of money for a long boat ride and a lost opportunity.
The communications with the company and online reviews were so positive about the chances of seeing bears or more sea life it gives an overconfidence in booking - we felt we had to share our own experience so that people book with their eyes open. read more
