I have been a camper at Camp Ridgecrest since 2013. After a decade of living on every hill,…read morespending a total of 22 weeks in the cabins, I can proudly say that this is my home away from home and the best place for any kid from all ages to spend their summer. The lack of technology helps limit distractions, strengthening the overarching goal to put Christ above all else. In my time at camp, there have been many changes, however the constant was that this is a place devoted to outreach in a safe place and spread the good news of the gospel. Living Conditions: the living conditions at Ridgecrest are fairly bare bones. Ten to twelve kids are in each cabin, with two or three counselors. There is a routine that is consistent throughout the session, consisting of cabin cleanup (specifics are later mentioned), and devotionals. These "devos" are typically in the style of open conversation guided by scripture. It is a great way to end the day. The bathhouses are also simple, with simple stalls and showers. Although there are sometimes mechanical issues (which happens in all settings similar to ridgecrest), some of my best memories are getting to know kids from different cabins while waiting for my favorite shower. Cabin Inspection: the cabin inspection system is always a lot of fun. It is only twenty or so minutes of making beds, cleaning the floors and organizing trunks, followed by the creation of a skit to perform for the Tribal Leader (age group leader). The TL will check to see whether or not everything is clean after a skit is performed, which all contribute to the honor cabin award. Skills: skills are one of the best parts of camp. It is basically like going to a class, where you hang out with your friends and have fun. They have all sorts of skills, from Bible Study to Archery, and from Rocketry to Spike Ball. My favorites have always been Bible Study, Outdoor Living, Crafts, and Trap Shooting. Free Time: at Ridgecrest you always have one or two free times throughout the day. At these times, the lake is open, you can play four square and two square, and skills are sometimes available! It is the best time to get to know kids from all sorts of age groups. Other Activities: there are regularly scheduled activities for all age groups, and a couple where it is all of camp playing one massive game. There are also night alone's, where one age group has the entire camp to themselves for a few hours to play one giant game. There are campouts and day hikes, none of which are too difficult. I can confidently say that anyone can make it through these hikes, and the views are incredible. Pisgah Program: the pisgah program has a special place in my heart. I have spent the summer of 2023 going all four sessions of pisgah. In pisgah, you leave camp on Monday and return on Thursday from a long camping trip. I cannot truly express how amazing this program is. The places you go are fantastic. My favorite spots I've been are Mount Mitchell and the Pisgah National Forest swimming holes. You live on the trail for days at a time, cooking your own food, setting up where you will sleep, and hiking beautiful trails. There is truly nothing else like it. Ridgecrest has so many more opportunities that I haven't mentioned, but everything we get to do is an experience designed to help you grow in faith and as a man.

I want to be fully transparent about my recent experience at Camp Hollymont as a counselor in…read moretraining aka CIT. *IMPORTANT INFORMATION I WANT PARENTS, AND FUTURE STAFF MEMBERS AND OR CIT's TO BE AWARE OF* I arrived at Camp Hollymont a day before the campers arrived. When I got there all of the CIT's received a brief synopsis of the camp and what our job entailed. Camp hollymont has wonderful camp counselors that take the time to make sure that your child's individual needs are met, especially for the little campers. I had also met the staff members and the camp director Emily Levy. A lot of the staff members are very friendly they took time out of their day to speak to me, I had lots of memorable moments with the staff members. Before I had arrived at camp I was required to do an online interview with Emily Levy ( Camp director ) our interview went well, she appeared to be very friendly and homey. Fast forward to when the camp had begun the camp director DID NOT appear to be as friendly as she was in our interview. Emily levy ( Camp Director ) always appeared to be annoyed, and easily irritable. Very unfriendly. Every time the CIT's would talk to her she would make us feel unimportant as if we were a burden by simply sharing the same space as her. One of the CIT's told me that Ms. Levy had told her that camp hollymont was for "campers and NOT CIT" and that C.I.T's were not wanted at the camp. The directors' comments rubbed me the wrong way. Because I personally thought the whole point of being a CIT was so that we could work our way up to being a part of the staff team. Ms.Levy would NEVER take the time out of her day to speak to CIT's. I personally didn't feel invited into her social circle/clique. She didn't even take the time to check in on us weekly. I was expecting her to be more personable considering that she is the camp director. On the day of my departure she didn't even come up to my car to tell me goodbye, not even a thank you for your help. She stood on the grass and watched my car pass by. As the days went by I was beginning to feel extremely drained from the camp, all of the C.I.T's were walking on average 4 miles a day to complete the laborious jobs we were required to do. By the time the first week was coming to an end I was ready to quit and go home but I stayed hoping that things would be better. For me personally managing children was the least stressful part of my day. The days at camp felt extremely long because CIT's didn't have the time to relax or have FUN we were always in constant work mode. I would usually end off my day with sour feet and extreme exhaustion, our day did not end until all of the campers were asleep, we would stay in the camper's hallways until 11 pm. As a C.I.T I felt like I was overworked. All of the CIT's worked like dogs while still trying to manage to maintain a smile on our faces for the campers. I'm not trying to discourage anyone interested in becoming a CIT but I would like people to know what my experience as a CIT was like so that you won't be clueless like I was when I was hired for the position. Staff members were NOT TRAINED in the skills they were assigned, there were many times where activities and skills at the camp felt thrown together. I asked one of the counselors whether or not she received the proper training to run certain skills and activities and she said NO. Hearing this from a camp counselor concerned me. The counselors weren't given a checklist, of things they should do during that class period. So they would always have to think about what they were going to teach the kids DURING THEIR SKILLS. I personally would NOT go back to camp hollymont again, especially if I'm going to receive the odd-one-out treatment from the camp director. The camp helped me to grow as an individual. I am very grateful that I had an opportunity like this even if it was challenging. I would like to thank all of the lovely staff, counselors, Gayle, Missy Roper, and the children that I was assigned to work with for being the wonderful human beings that they are!!

Not just a place, but a place in your heart, the staff and counselors are extremely knowledgeable and well trained. After all, the camp has been around since 1933. Two and three week camping packages, Kate has once again signed up for the 3 week program. Building friendships from past years, my daughter has kept in contact with several of her fellow campers and counselors. She looks forward to camp, but not the day her 7 year old sister joins her. Sort of personal, I'm of the belief that this is something Kate want to "do alone" without pesky parents or siblings around. The Camp Ton A Wandah summer program provides campers several dozen activities such as horseback riding, zip lining, fine arts and crafts, performing arts, dance, volleyball, basketball, softball, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, games, archery, riflery, rock climbing, high ropes, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, hiking, backpacking, field trips and much more. A tie to nature and a deep respect for the Native Americans who originally inhabited the Blue Ridge mountains are a Camp Ton-A-Wandah inspiration behind an alliance of the "three tribes - Cherokee, Navajo and Mohawk. Handed down from generation to generation, the three tribes are among the camps oldest and most revered traditions. Kate is proud to be a "Mohawk" at Ton-A-Wandah. Care packages and birthday parties are a plus. Parents can order "care packages" from several places in Hendersonville or plan a cabin "birthday party" for all to enjoy. Kate reports 5 stars for Camp Ton-A-Wandah. /s/ William E. Lewis Jr. Vero Beach, Florida

I truly attribute my daughters' maturity, independence, and adventurous spirit to the many summers she's spent hiking-swimming-riding-canoeing-performing-and now serving her fellow Rockbrook girls. From waking up to the bell, to polar bear swims, hiking challenges, dressing up like super hero's, and dancing your heart out at the surprise dances. Each day is always filled with unexpected moments awaiting just around the corner. The food- oh don't get me started on the food! A top notch chef prepares locally sourced meals for every occasion. My daughters favorites are the made from scratch muffin breaks and taco nights with hand rolled tamales!!! They also love the homemade pizza! There's just something about waking up to the cardinals in the heart of the wooded mountain that for us feels like home. My youngest daughter will be a CIT next year. She's attended Rockbrook since she was 5years old. She has made lifelong friends and learned songs she will one day sing to her own children. I miss RBC and go back for every reunion. When I have kids, I will definitely send them here. I highly recommend RBC to everyone I meet! P.S.- I see a really weird negative review on here that I'm 99% sure is fake because it couldn't farther from the truth! Take it from someone who spent a cumulative TWO YEARS of my life here (adding up all of those summers!)- it's a magical, authentic, and caring place.
