We've been attending Camp Awesome for several years now. We always go for a few weeks of August. My kiddos just love it. They splash around in the waves with staff and the staff is wonderful. The highlight is when the ice cream truck comes by after lunch and everyone buys a treat. All treats are pre packed with easy to read ingredients, so very accessible for those kiddos with food allergies too. All the classics - big sticks, ice cream sandwiches, bomb pops, jaw breakers, snowcones, pickles, banana on a stick, cotton candy buckets, paletas, and more. It's also one of the few camps where you purchase by the day vs the week, so the flexibility is great. It's California. Going to beach camp is a rite of passage. So is the sand you bring home in your car too. read more

We live in San Francisco but would go down to LA every summer so my boys can attend Camp Awesome! That's how much they love this camp. Since I don't attend the camp myself, I asked my 10-year old what he liked about it and he said: "the staff is really friendly because even if you make a mistake and do something wrong, they don't yell at you. They let us play in the sand, there are tons of games and activities (there's a game where they said a certain type of action and you have to do it or you lose; there's also a game where we pair up in teams and capture the flag), we go to the ocean two or three times a day to swim and play games there. They're really nice and there's ice cream truck every day and pizza on Friday." Speaking of the staff, they are truly one of the best (especially Jessica!!!) and so responsive! Camp Awesome is AWESOME! My son has been going for 4 summers now and he asks to go back every year!! Thanks to them my son LOVES the ocean and knows exactly how to swim safely and happily in the LA ocean. He is so excited every day to go to camp and they do what kids should be doing in the summer.. they HAVE FUN! They have time for arts and crafts and play lots of games too! It's an amazing community to be a part of and what better way to be a California kid than to spend your summer on the sand and in the ocean! My grandson loves Camp Awesome beach camp. This is his second year attending, and all last year he asked, "How many more days until beach camp??" There is just the right amount of structure but not too much. This is about summer, enjoying the ocean, making friends and having fun. He is well supervised and sunscreen is reapplied throughout the day. Every morning when we arrive for drop-off he gets a huge, happy welcome from the counselors. My son has been going here a week at a time for the last four years. He loves the activities and the campers and you can't beat the location in Playa Del Rey. It's on the beach behind Playa Provisions and my husband and I often drop him and go grab a quick breakfast before work or pick him up and take him there for dinner. The counselors are wonderful with my son, the drop off/pick up is easy with their app. Just a solid place to send your kid for the week in LA. This year we registered and had to cancel at the last minute as my family had to leave town suddenly and they worked very hard to help us sort out our options, of which they offered many. My three daughters have been going here for years and always love it. My oldest daughter started at four years old and still dropped in for a week this summer now that she's 13. It's very well organized and the staff is very positive and empowering towards the kids. James, a.k.a. My kids spent several summers attending Camp Awesome and really enjoyed it. In a city where so many camps are super specialized and geared towards training, it is special to just hang out and chill! Really enjoying Camp Awesome. They are extremely accomodating---you can purchase single days versus weeks at a time. Plus they manage the waitlist very well---I was able to get my child in camp for every day she was waitlisted. Office staff goes above and beyond and even respond by email within minutes. Camp counselors are sweet. I really like the fact that my child is able to go to a beach camp but not have to spend the entire day in the Sun. It prevents her from getting Sun burned and burnt out. Camp Awesome was amazing for my 6 year old son! He was so excited to share how much fun he had when I picked him up. The staff was amazing as they approached us they made us feel welcome and at ease. They went over all the protocols and walked through how the app works for checking in/out and messaging. I had to pick him up early and messaged them informing of my arrival time. I arrived and my son was ready to go, which was great. They have a staff to child ratio when doing certain activities. They check in with lifeguards regarding ocean conditions before they go into the water. We will definitely be going again on a regular basis and couldn't be happier. Did the online portion of Camp Awesome Super Highway. Best program ever!! My 6 year old looked forward to the various activities offered on line and enjoyed the Interaction with the leaders and the other children. It was a well organized and fun program. Adele was saddened when the program ended. We are in New York and it was great interacting with children from various states. I hope this online program is offered next Summer. My daughter loves Camp Awesome!! This past summer was her second year going. Last year I was nervous about her being so little and not knowing how to swim, but the staff is very attentive and makes sure all the kids stay safe. You get what you pay for. The registration fee is low compared to other camps and now I know why. This "camp" is simply a baby/kidsitting service at the beach. There are no lessons or goals, but to have fun. Each afternoon, the kids go to a store (?) for snacks. My daughter told me about the candy or popsicle or lollipop she purchased each day. My daughter also described how one of the campers told her a funny story about how he pooped a baby out. What?! This is so inappropriate. Lastly, my daughter came home with her face sunburnt. I was so glad when the week was over. A parent friend told me just last week that she arrived at 5 and waited for over 20 minutes to pick her daughter up because they hadn't returned from the store (to buy sugar or salt-laden snacks). Another parent friend told me he pulled his daughter out even before they began, on the first day, because not one counselor greeted them and when he asked his daughter to join in on the Rainbow Loom activity, the counselor just smirked, and was not inviting at all. A neon green t-shirt is included with tuition and I think it's a good way to easily spot campers. Also, communication with Jessica, the secretary was always easy and very responsive. Overall, I believe this is a no-frills camp option and my daughter seemed to have a good time. However, I wasn't impressed, so I don't think I'll bring her back next year. read more

My 8-year old niece was visiting for about two weeks and so I needed a day camp to take care of her while I was at work. Looking through Yelp, I found Camp Awesome. My niece loved this place. I was worried about her making friends on her first day since she was registered in the middle of summer but that wasn't a problem at all. She also received a camp awesome shirt but it was obviously used and full of stains from the previous camper. I can understand the need to reuse shirts but I feel like there should be more effort in cleaning them. Camp Awesome is a beach camp experience that we all enjoyed if we were lucky enough to be able to go to beach camp back in the day. Silly beach games, Wading in the water. Body surfing. My son attended Camp Awesome for the first time this summer. After the first day I asked him how it was. His response? AWESOME! The counselors are so great and they come up with really fun games and activities. Then we found out they were going to start offering birthday parties. Well my son wasted no time in deciding that was what he wanted. We just had his birthday party this last weekend, and I have to say it was the easiest party I've ever had for any of my children! My son is one of the original campers at Camp Awesome. We discovered this gem of a camp in its early days, and it has never disappointed! My son begs to go back every year and if we'd let him, he'd be there every day of the summer! He never tires of it. He's had many of his buddies join him there too. Camp Awesome is one of the best (if not THE best) summer camps out there. Camp Awesome is the type of summer camp I wish I went to as a child. The co-directors Zach and James are every parent and child's dream come true. They are hilarious, imaginative, fun, creative, and always fair. The same great qualities are easily found in their hand picked staff as well. The amount of effort put in behind the scenes to ensure that the kids are happy, healthy, and safe is unreal. Three key examples are the bathroom, beach, and water time. Every time a child uses the bathroom, a staff member checks, clears, and then guards the bathroom so that no one other than the children are in the bathroom at a time. Secondly, the sand is cleaned daily to prevent injury. Thirdly and most impressively, the water time. Staff members deliver the rules and discuss water conditions with the lifeguard every single time - twice a day, everyday. Once in the water, the staff members are in the ocean, forming a net of protection which no child is allowed to pass. There is no idle-watching in this camp. All staff is hands-on at all times. This camp lives up to its name - all the counselors and kids that attend will greet you with awesome attitudes. My 9-year-old was a first-timer at Camp Awesome this summer. I did an exhaustive web search for a local, reasonably priced camp and read review after review of everything I could find. About Awesome, I thought, it better live up to its name .... In the end, I signed her up for two weeks with Awesome, and I'm so glad I did! My daughter LOVED IT!! From day 1, she could not wait to return to camp the following day, for the entire two weeks she was there. She made several new friends and enjoyed the daily games organized by the counselors. The program did a good job at keeping the kids engaged and having a good time all day, every day. They had ample water time/activities, beach activities, arts & crafts, as well as time at the park across the street. One of the highlights was going to the corner store every day to buy snacks. Yes, there was consumption of sugar, but, hey, it's summer. Let the kids live a little! The director was highly professional and seems to know what he's doing in terms of running a successful camp and hiring a great staff. I felt that my daughter was safe and well-cared for at this camp. All in all, it was a score for mom, score for Camp Awesome and fun, fun, fun for my little one! As a matter of fact, after my daughter's two-week stint was up, she asked to go back to visit her friends and the counselors at Awesome. Aawwww!! She will definitely return next year. Camp Awesome is the most kid friendly, parent friendly camp in LA. Trust me I know because I have 3 kids and am always looking for things for them to do. The other reviewers mention how much fun the kids have and I completely concur. I will add that my own kids love it because it's relaxed and "actually fun", and in the summer they just want to chill out and goof around with friends and not work on a skill or a sport or be so focused all the time. It allows them to let loose: arts and crafts, boogie boarding, ball sports, hikes etc, there is something for everyone. The counselors are very engaged and the "customer service" side is just top-notch -- they do an excellent job of working with parents which is just super refreshing. read more

My 3 kids (two 6 yr-olds and a 9 yr-old tried this summer camp for the first time last week. They loved it! When I come to pick them up (later in the afternoon) they never want to leave. The counselors are great and the owner, James, is wonderful to work with: very friendly, accommodating, accessible and fair. There are plenty of counselors so you don't have to worry your kids (especially your little ones) when they go in the ocean. And unlike many other camps, instead of having one counselor per group, all the counselors rotate between all the groups, which gives your kids a chance to meet them all. It's a day at the beach so it's impossible not to get some sun even with sunblock, but the staff really do a great job of reapplying layers of sunblock and never make you feel silly for asking for extra help in that area. I recommend a sun hat and sunglasses, as the camp does, however, if you really don't want your kid to burn. (But you might have to bribe your kids to keep them on.) The camp uses this really great phone app through which you can check in and communicate with the counselors, and you can also call James direct. The staff are good about getting back to you but be aware, it IS on the beach so they might not get the message right away. But considering their situation, they are responsive and available. I feel my kids are safe there and they enjoy it. And they also get to mix with different age groups to some extent, which I think is nice. We'd definitely go back and recommend to others! read more

Fun, Affordable, Safe. We started going to Camp Awesome last year when my daughter was 7. We had just moved to LA from the Midwest. She didn't know anyone and was previously afraid of the ocean the last time she saw it (3 yrs old). She LOVED camp! She now has no fear of the ocean and goes deeper and deeper each time. She learns new activities and makes new friends every week. She also loves the ice cream truck that visits everyday. We've attended multiple camps in LA, but Camp Awesome is the one she always asks for and by far our favorite. My husband's kids live in TX with their mom, but they were able to be with us for a few weeks this summer. We did a ton of research on which camp to send them to, and luckily landed on Camp Awesome. For two kids who were scared of the water at the beginning of the summer, this camp was absolutely wonderful. They're now fearless in the water (ocean and pool), and they had a BLAST everyday at camp! Check-in/check-out process was always super smooth. This is our first year trying out a beach camp. We chose Camp Awesome because we know James the owner/director from an afterschool recreation facility. He always impressed me with his enthusiasm, his leadership, his ability to mix all the kids involved regardless of age, gender or background, and his safety protocols. My 8 year old daughter had a blast at this camp. They reapply sunblock and have shade facilities. They also utilize the Del Rey Lagoon park across the street too, for a change of scenery and additional shade and grass areas, which is quite unique to most of the beach camps. Just like my experience with James at the afterschool facility he did a fantastic job of providing a lot of interactive and all inclusive activities for all of the kids. There was a great ratio of counselors to kids and the communication with the parents was incredible. They were quick to respond to our registration, they sent out update e-mails to welcome us to camp, they sent reminders on what was happening and anything you needed to bring with you to camp, and even sent our Instagram photos of happenings at the camp. The dropoff for camp was easy and quick to find. I really don't have any complaints about this camp. We had such a great experience. read more

This camp is much more affordable than almost all of the camps out there. But you should understand a few things: 1) "Snacks" means that your child will receive ONE goldfish or ONE gummy. No joke, so pack snacks. And yes, I mean one little cracker or one little gummy. Not a pack of them. One individual piece. 2) Unless you remember send your kiddo with a water bottle, the nearest water source is at the park and the water tastes "yucky". The water fountains are old and also look yucky! 3) There was some staff turnover, so I heard frequently that the new staffers "Aren't as nice as the old ones" 4) At pick-up, you'll need to walk onto the beach to grab your kids and sign-out with a counselor. If you're wearing traditional work attire, walking on sand really stinks! Keep a pair of flip flops in the car because they don't care that you're getting sand and scuffs on your favorite pair of heels Really, you get what you pay for. After a great experience last summer, I'm disappointed. Meh. read more

Can not recommend Camp Awesome highly enough!!! We have know James & Zack for years and the have created a camp that is fun, safe and has the kids exhausted when they get home (always a good thing)! The camp is in a great location, on the beach, in a cove off the thoroughfare in Playa del Rey. There is a playground across from the campsite and they always have something special and exciting planned on Friday's (bounce houses, pizza parties, etc!) Last but not least, they are ridiculously affordable. In this day and age of spending a minimum of $250/week, Camp Awesome has coverage from 8-6 for under $150.00's!!! My niece visits every summer and does day camp every year. She's done Gymnastics camps, theater camps, art camps and swimming camps and I think she liked Camp Awesome better than any of the others, because it was just FUN! No pressure to perform. The counselors are great. They are all very positive and welcoming and were truly Awesome! It was also extremely reasonable $$$ About half the price of some of the camps she's attended. I was a little worried about being out in the sun all day, but it was not an issue, she's fair skinned and we covered her in sunblock in the morning and then they remind the campers to reapply and help if needed. This camp really is AWESOME, that's what my children say and they are 7 & 10 years old. If you pick your kids up and they have huge smiles and they're tired, then job well done Camp Awesome! The staff are very nice and my kids love them and I feel at ease knowing they'll be looked after. This camp was recommended by a friend, so I registered online which was really easy and I downloaded the 'brightwheel' app for checking my children in & out (awesome!). This camp is also great for families who need days here and there and don't want to commit to a whole week. The camp is at the beach, so don't be foolish and think they're going to be sitting doing Maths and Reading, you can send a book with your child if they want some quiet time. My children dove right in and particapted in everything and my youngest told me she chose to have some quiet time to do arts & crafts as she was tired. My kids told me that the some of the staff stand in the ocean (at swim time) to form an invisble line, so that no child goes past them. That's great and I appreciate that considering the ocean can be quite rough and cold. All in all my kids and I think it's a great camp and we recommend you to try it out. read more

So last year we hired a nanny to watch our kids and she was terrible (slept all day, watched awful TV with my kids in the room, took them clothe shopping for herself when she was supposed to be making their summer fun) so we fired her and put them in Camp Awesome. The best camp and the greatest value in Los Angeles. The counselors are so nice and fun and the way they treat my kids is delightful. They gave them empowering nicknames and do all kinds of great activities. My kids 12 and 9 loved it so much they couldn't wait to come back this year. My kids are outside, playing and enjoying the best that Los Angeles beaches have to offer. They're safe, kept well sun screened and when they get home they're happy and tired from physical activity.
