I walked right up to the window, slipped everything I had in to the clerk. He smiled at me and was more than willing to give me a temporary pass, BUT in order to get a resident's pass, you need to register your car in Somerville. On the application, it had said a Massachusetts registration was required (which I already had). Unfortunately, I have to make a second trip in order to get my permanent resident parking pass, but it was one of the most pleasant experiences I have had at a government office. I agree that the tape thing is annoying but that's the PO's rule: not the clerks being stingy.. I haven't experienced the rudeness that some reviewers point out. But I have seen customers project their frustration onto the clerks, which just adds to the stress. Instead, why not offer a courteous greeting and ask how they are when you're at the counter? These are hard working people, struggling to support their families and themselves. Treat them them with courtesy.

Sometimes the guy behind the counter here comes off as a grump, but as is the case with everyone, they're really nice once you dig deeper. It's certainly not a state of the art facility, but they do a more or less good job. They also recommended everyone in the community read "the Martian", which thank god they did, because that book is incredible and I would have never read it otherwise. Advice: ramp up the website with some interactive professional help, and get more recommendations out to the locals! Mine held up for about 3 of the 5 hours required to cook the turkey. Once the pan punctured, all of the turkey juice dripped out onto the bottom of the oven, where it proceeded to cook. And cook. And cook. And burn. And smoke. In an attempt to prevent the asphyxiation of our guests, I opened our front door, allowing the smoke to billow out into the apartment building. As you can guess, this set off the apartment fire alarms - the red strobe light ones that notify the fire department and can't be shut off. The fire department was on the scene in less than 3 minutes, and were very polite about the whole ordeal. They laughed about it, gave us some cooking advice (some of their favorite sides, not how to prevent fires), and asked that we call when the meal was ready. The picture verifies my story...

Good to know: 1)…read moreThis place is teeny tiny. 2) The selection skews heavily towards kids books and young adult fiction. 3) The hours are less than ideal; and it's closed on weekends. 4) On-hand media selection is limited. 5) There are only a few computers, but there's almost always one available. 6) There's a convenient drop box for books outside the front doors if you need to return books when they are closed. Better to know: 1) In person, over the phone, or on-line (with a minuteman library card) you can request materials from any other library in the minuteman network, and they will be delivered here. They will e-mail you when they get there, and all you have to do is walk in and hand them your card at the desk. Saving you time, and frustration. You can also renew books on-line. 2) Libraries are very in right now. Save money and be green all at the same time!

But still, the awesomeness of the library completely outweighs the fact that it's hours are not what I would want them to be. The staff is unbelievably friendly. Sometimes I feel silly for always checking out books that are less than the highest quality of literature (can I help it if young adult sci fi makes awesome bus reading?), but they don't judge. I'm also continually impressed with their DVD selection. Awesome service, awesome selection, less than awesome hours, but still definitely a good alternative to paying for books that I'll just have to move or paying to rent DVD's!
