Gym Interior
Adina S.

I've visited Cambridge Athletic Club a few times to take workout classes through the ClassPass app. I'm especially a fan of their Zumba classes! It's pretty cool how the gym is located in a building with a bunch of biotech firms, but it can be a bit confusing to find the entrance. The facilities are overall pretty nice. I was especially impressed by the locker room, which was big and had plenty of showers available. There was also a sauna, which I didn't get the chance to try. The gym not only has lots of equiptment, but also has squash and basketball courts. There are also a handful of workout rooms spread out throughout the gym. The gym doesn't give off luxurious vibes like an Equinox or Life Time, but it has all the basics you might need!

Good selection of weights!

3.5 stars. A good gym that meets all your objectives in a limited space area. Came here for a workout and was pretty impressed. The quality of equipment (how much they had in the building) and the fact that it wasn't crowded. The gym has an open space area, cross fit area, basketball court, racquetball court, an area for treadmills/cardio, and a free weights area. Everything you need for a good workout. Is it a super posh gym, no. But, if you're in need of a quickie, this place hits the spot. I'd go back.

The tech square location is great - well equipped and well staffed. Great value compared to other gyms in the area!

Decent gym. Used only for a day but not worth the $25 they charge. You'll get the same service at some of the other local gyms.

Any issue with wearing sleeveless muscle shirts? As someone who travels a lot, some gyms I've been to wouldn't let me work out because I was wearing a gym shark sleeveless shirt. They required all males to have a shirt with sleeves 🤦‍♂️

Hi Tom! You may wear a sleeveless shirt at CAC.

Unfortunately, that completely changed after taking a class with the instructor, Alexander Liviner. From the beginning, his attitude came across as arrogant and superior -- exactly the opposite of what I was hoping for. At one point, he made fun of me for being slow. It was completely unnecessary. If he was trying to be funny, it wasn't funny at all. It felt humiliating rather than motivating. I also got a little confused with the weights and accidentally grabbed the wrong one. Instead of guiding me or correcting me in a professional way, he made a facial expression that made me feel like I was stupid. A coach's role is to support and teach -- not to mock or belittle someone who is trying. It also felt like he clearly favored more advanced participants, giving them more attention while others were left feeling invisible. I left the class embarrassed, disappointed, and honestly regretting that I took it. It was a horrible experience. Lifetime should choose instructors who lead with encouragement and professionalism -- not arrogance or favoritism.

However, I do think there is room for improvement when it comes to overall cleanliness and attention to detail. Unfortunately, my experience in a class with an instructor named Alexander was very disappointing. It was my first time taking that class, and it was completely full. I did not feel properly guided or supported as a beginner. It was very clear that he showed preference toward certain pretty women in the class, giving them most of his attention. At times, it felt unprofessional, as if he was more focused on flirting and showing off than actually instructing. That kind of behavior should stay outside of a professional fitness class setting. Because I did not receive proper corrections, I ended up with knee pain after the session from doing repeated squats incorrectly. As a first-timer, I expected more supervision and professionalism. Overall, the gym itself has great potential, but this experience left a very bad impression. I would not recommend taking his class.

Then, Covid happened. I think they did offer some workouts via the app, but running in place in my living room was not something I would have gotten psyched for, so I canceled my membership. Fast forward to 2021 and I was getting my only bathroom fixed and would be without a shower at home for 2-3 months. I called this OTF to see if their showers were open, and they were -- and they were offering a reduced-rate 3-month special offer to bring back old members. No-brainer! Over maybe 5 months, I: -started running (and once clocked a 7:27 mile which is WILD for someone who was winded walking that thing in elementary school) -learned to like lifting weights (and getting muscle definition) -dropped two pant sizes without trying This location is spacious, friendly, and welcoming. The classes (which are the same at all locations) are challenging but customizable. Their motto is "more life" and I do feel the workouts set you up to be healthy in the long term. We've had a lot of coach turnover but OTF Assembly Row always lands 2-3 really solid coaches. You'll end up taking with the same ones if you keep the same schedule week to week. You might even follow each other on instagram and get to know each other as real people outside the studio -- at just the right level, so you feel the relationship is professional but they care about you as people. Shout out to Em, Dan, Jenn, and Shannon, who are the top coaches here right now. And to Amanda, Jordan, Maddie, Brit, Ryan, Lauren, and probably a ton more who I'm forgetting, who also brought the motivation and made these workouts fun and rewarding. I go about 6 days/week (so I don't kill myself each day haha) and it's a huge stabilizing part of my routine.

I've been going to Fitness Together for a few months now and have only great things to say about…read morethe gym and it's trainers. I've been training exclusively with Alla since I started and am motivated to get up in the morning and work out 3x a week. Alla incorporates a routine mixed with some familiarity and a lot of new challenges every session. She is always problem solving on how to get my body moving outside of its comfort zone and keeps me accountable to work at my best. I have always been a moderately active person but needed something to change up my routine and I'm learning a lot about how my body works and I feel challenged everytime I come into the studio. I would highly recommend the studio to anyone looking for a refresh!

I have been trained mostly with Rob, but I have had a couple of sessions with all the trainers - JP, Kathy, Haley, Eli and Alla. The gym is one of the major good changes in my life, I am so glad that I found this place. Since I realized I need to work out on a regular basis, I tried things like jogging, going to school's gym, or following YouTube videos to do Yoga and other exercises. All those attempts did not last because my brain got bored soon about the exercises, and all of a sudden I found myself became so creative at making all kinds of excuses to stay on the couch. I felt guilty, and I wondered: Having your body repeat certain movements is simple, but why the hell is it so hard to stick on such a simple thing in a long term? I was eager to find a way to turn workouts into a habit, that was when I decided to give personal training a try. I expected it to work, and it did, far beyond my expectation. I give credit to JP and his excellent FT crew for it, and thank them for making every training session professional, diverse and fun. It is wonderful to have all the trainers that genuinely care about you as instructors and friends. They helped me to rebuild my relationship with my body, which get me motivated to come to the gym, now I find that working with them is a necessary part of my life. It is great to feel the positive change in body. A couple months ago, while I was looking for my next job, I thought it would be bad if I had to relocate for the new job cause I would really miss this place, and I don't know if I could find a better one elsewhere. Knowing my new job would still be in MA was a relief. I am very happy that I can continue working with them. There are two floors, plenty of space, and great variety of training equipment, all in good condition. I like the environment a lot. There is nothing I could complain. You would LOVE this place. Attached is a picture I love, when Rob got injured accidentally and there was blood left on the ground, I joked with JP and Kathy that they could draw a crime scene. Annnd... they really did it:) Nice drawing isn't it? LOL

If you reading this review because you are thinking of purchasing a BuyWithMe/Gilt City offer, I am…read morewriting this to save you $59. I purchased the same BuyWithMe voucher last winter at the same price, which rewarded me three 45 minute personal training sessions. I should have known by first glance that this was a bad idea. This gym is located in a depressing parking lot and it gets worse when you walk inside. This place is in serious disrepair. We're talking faded, chipped walls and random garbage left in corners. If Ben Affleck decides to make Gone Baby Gone 2, he'd be wise to shoot the movie here if he wants to capture how depressing Boston life can be. I'm no Nancy, that my was my mother's name, so I can overlook the decor. My main problem with this place was the owner/trainer Norm. Perhaps a decent human being, but this man should not be a personal trainer or businessman. My first session consisted mostly of hitting a tire with some oversized mallet (probably stolen from a county fair), some kettle bell dancing, and jumping jacks. After about 25 minutes, Norm declared our session over and invited me inside his office. Once seated, I felt like I was at Ernie Boch Honda and about to get screwed. Norm gave me the hard sell on signing up for more sessions beyond the three I purchased. He questioned my commitment to fitness and asked why I was even there. I politely brushed off these statements and I said I'd decide after the next or last session. During the second session, Norm and I did exactly the same basic exercises. I barely broke a sweat. There was one new thing though. At the end of our brief (yep 25 of 45 minutes) session, Norm told me he wanted to show me something "special," and declared I should get on my back. Norm lifted my right leg, straddled it with his right shoulder and leaned in. HEAVEN. I can't even put into the English, the sensations I felt . Norm said that was "The Norm Stretch." If you happen to be reading this review after you purchased the voucher, the pleasure of the "Norm Stretch" can help make up for the lost money. It's the only reason I'm giving this place one star instead of zero, besides the fact you can't give zero stars on Yelp. Again, instead of giving me the full 45 minute training session, nearly half of it was dedicated to sales pitch. All I wanted to do was schedule my third pre-paid session, but Norm was like a Willy Loman that wouldn't quit. He tried to appeal to my emotions, painting a visual picture of a thinner, more muscular Nat, jet skiing on the Charles River with a few Harvard Hotties on my side. After that failed, he tried the insult route, saying the fact I wasn't signing up for more sessions (beyond the deal) was a sign I was not ready for fitness. He also added maybe I don't deserve fitness. While I should have been terribly offended, it was obvious Norm just did not want me to come for my third, pre-paid session. In the end, I decided to grant Norm's wish. There would be no third session, and of course no fourth or fifth. If Norm focused on the quality of his training sessions versus signing me up for a long term commitment, maybe I would have bought more. In the end, $60 for a regular price "45" minute session is just way too much to pay someone when the only value Trainer Norm offered was counting my jumping jacks for me.

I really let my health fall apart towards the end of college, and I'd never really done a proper…read morephysical training program. So I decided that some expert assistance was in order and, after shopping around, started training sessions at Fitness Together. Within a year, I'd lost that senior-year weight gain, built more muscle than I'd ever had before, brought my cardiovascular fitness up into the healthy range, and learned a whole lot about exercise. The trainers at FT were great at providing expert advice, encouragement, and an exercise program well tuned to my goals. The only downside is that one-on-one training is accordingly expensive (though reasonably so, and FT seems to offer a lower price than some places that offer training as a supplemental service). And, of course, training can be no better than the effort you're willing to put into it. But if you have some funds to spare and want the best effort multiplier for your fitness program, personal training is the way to go and I'd highly recommend Fitness Together.
