I recently attended a viewing at the E. H. Ford Mortuary in Memphis, Tennessee. I have never seen…read morea funeral home in such array! It is housed it what used to be a car dealership location. The windows were dirty, the furniture was torn, you could see a room full of boxes and other unkept items in a room adjacent to the main lobby. The office was unkept with papers and old file cabinets in view. You had to enter the facility on a ramp that used to be used to put the cars in the show room. The ramp was very steep! I have never, ever seen a mortuary in this condition. When viewing the body, the body was positioned too high in the casket. Also, the make-up on the deceased was caked and very oily. Loose hair was on the face of the deceased. All of this had to be brought to the attention of the funeral directors. The pillow where the deceased's head was positioned, still had the plastic on it. That was, also, brought to the funeral directors attention. The appearance of the facility was less that what any family should have to experience, especially while grieving the loss of a loved one. The mortuary should be ashamed!

(There ultimately wasn't b/c he or she never got back to us regarding availability, so we read the Episcopalian Committal script ourselves). Time and time again it took too long to hear from someone who was able to fully communicate what we needed to know, though someone finally did. And like everyone everywhere in the American death industry, they tried to grossly overcharge us for some things. The grounds are lovely, though, and my mom's finally back in Memphis buried near her brother and parents. So, there's that.

It took a solid month to arrange a simple graveside service for my mother. On the day of the funeral, the funeral home was locked up tight and no one was there. I called the contact person twice and she stated someone one be there in 10 minutes. no one came. Family members were having to leave to find a public restroom and return before we could start the funeral because there were no restrooms available. We were instructed to arrive one hour early to provide wet signature on documents, as required by the state. These documents were never signed because no one ever came. We had a "self-service" graveside funeral. It had been decided that we would bring a vault to place the remains in. No one ever arrived to properly inter the remains, and my husband placed the remains in the vault himself. It may or may not be interred according to state guidelines. We were planning a very short graveside service so we opted out of chairs and a tent due to cost. I did however expect a stand or table to set the remains on. We had to place my mother's remains unceremoniously on the ground next to a weathered and worn old piece of plywood that covered the grave. This felt very degrading, humiliating, and embarrassing. No one has reached out to offer any apology or to arrange for the required documents to be signed. I would never bury any family member in any of the Forest Hills cemeteries. They have had multiple complaints filed with the state spanning over a few years time. I would have buried my mother somewhere else, but she requested she be there with the rest of her family.
