Calvary Catholic Cemetery offers a little serenity right off the hustle and bustle of Hawley & Blue Mound.
Before the idea of reserving land within a city for public parks came about, there were cemeteries. Cemeteries are, quite literally, the precursor to the modern day public park. In the 19th century, people utilized cemeteries much as we do the parks of today. They would picnic near a loved one's grave and spend the day recreating in the sunshine surrounded by nature.
Creating cemeteries that were also spots for leisure and enjoying nature first came into fashion in Europe before making its way to the US and eventually to right here in Milwaukee. Calvary Catholic Cemetery was the second such cemetery created in Milwaukee with this vision in mind (the first being Forest Home Cemetery).
I love wandering through here. There are so many beautifully sculpted stones. I never fail to notice something different every time I'm here (my latest discovery was the headstone for a family dog from back in the late 1800's).
Fun fact: The chapel on the hill in this cemetery is the highest natural point in all of Milwaukee.
The road that wanders through here is longer than you would think and you can actually get a pretty good walk in by wandering through this cemetery.
Who knows what bit of Milwaukee history you might see along the way?
