I'm not sure how to review a community centre, but I'll have a go!
I've been coming to the Calton Centre for a couple of months now to attend Insanity exercise classes run by Beach Fit Boot Camp. The facilities are good, there is a larger hall as you enter (on Mondays there seems to be a choir practicing in there), and down the stairs there are a number of smaller studios. We're most often in the one nearest the stairs, with the large mirror (helpful to make sure you're keeping form). The combination of doing a maximum intensity interval workout and it being the summer months does mean the room gets very warm, but there is air conditioning, and stepping out into the corridor offers a brief respite in our allocated 30 seconds rest.
There are lots of classes run at the Calton Centre, a large number of them are exercise focussed, but there's also various groups for babies and toddlers as well as the afore mentioned choir. It's a very useful local resource, especially given the facilities are reasonably modern - this isn't some dusty old church hall (though I expect it once was).
It's also very close to my flat, so not far for my weary lunged and squatted out legs to walk home! read more
