I went to see DR Calman for eye pain, it took a long time to be seen by him, they tried having me see some one else (optometrist instead). Finally he came in, listened and diagnosed me fast, gave suggestions for treatment. His suggestions worked and I am grateful to him for his help. He is good Dr, it is hard to get to meet him though. I wasn't the patient, but was in the exam room with my mom. I watched and listened to Dr. Calman as he was examining my mom. At first, I thought he was ok (no personality - but I get it that he's not there to please people). After all the exams were done, my mom wanted to ask him a question not directly related to what he examined my mom for, but related to her vision in general, and he very dismissive. He was very rude! He won't let my mom finish what she wanted to ask; he would just cut it her off (read similar reviews of him walking away when asked). The front desk and back office MAs are nice, polite, and professional unlike Dr. Jerk. Suffice to say, I'm now researching for another eye doctor for my mom. read more

See my review under Dr. Calman's practice called "Premier Eyecare" I made an appointment outside my regular optometrist to see Dr. Calman because I had a specific eye problem & my internist wanted me to see an ophthamalogist (these are M.D.s usually requiring 7 yrs of training including residency not including specialization vs. optometrists who are O.D.s that have 4 years and may or may not have additional training). Long story short, I didn't even get to see Dr. Calman. When one of the optometrists started to examine me, I explained I specifically asked for my appt to be with Dr. Calman and there was a specific reason why I made the appt with him. They said he'd see me but after checking with him a few minutes later they said he was too busy to see me and they didn't think it was necessary. Wait, I took time off work and made an additional appointment to have my eyes dilated after my regular optometrist already examined me and you do a switcharoo on me? You guys were the one that set the appt time and because you're trying to squeeze as much money from people as possible you don't have time to see me? Bite me. The examination was fair enough but they kept me for an hour and a half (which means I have to run out and feed the meter since they have no parking lot) for a total examination time of maybe 5-7 minutes. And after I expressed my dissatisfaction, I got, "How will you be paying for your co-pay?" Go somewhere else. read more

An appointment at Premier Eye Care - allegedly with Andrew Calman, MD - was the WORST experience I've ever had in a medical setting. My appointment which should've lasted 45-60 minutes (according to them), consumed 4+ hours of my afternoon. When "Dr." Calman finally graced me with his amazing presence, he was nothing but condescending, rude and arrogant. His attitude has clearly created an uncomfortable and miserable environment at his office - his staff clearly hates their jobs. It's really sad. Worst doctor I've ever encountered. read more

Had a bad experience with Dr Calman. His staff especially Dr. Saldana are very nice but he was such a jerk. He walked away from me when I was asking him a question and was refusing to help with an issue I had with my eyes, he was sending me to someone else at another location when his office had performed the service before. We are paying for the service, it's not like your giving us service for free. read more

Went to Premier Eyecare b/c they are in my health network and close to my house. Was impressed with the care I received from Dr. Yu & Dr. Calman. I call on physicians for a living and have a pretty good instinct for doctors who "care and get-it" and those that don't. And sadly, many doctors are on autopilot. These guys are not! I was happy with my experience. Keep in mind, the more descriptive you can be with ANY doctor the better they can help you. Three years ago, I told Dr. Calman about some blurring in my vision. He said not to worry about it. But i did, as it kept getting worse. Finally, last June I went to see him again. I saw a different Dr. there. Can't remember his name. He said that I should wait 4 months to decide what to do about the blurring that had been getting worse for 3 years. So, I went to another Dr. Turns out that I have a condition called VMT. If I had treated it 3 years ago, I could have gotten rid of it. Now, it's too late. The glasses they prescribed for me were the same prescription I got three years ago. My new Dr. says that they are about 30% of what I need. I don't even know how these guys are still in business. read more

My husband and I have been going to Premier Eyecare for over twenty years. We have had annual exams from several doctors in this practice, and they are all excellent, as is the staff. Andrew Calman performed cataract surgery on one of my eyes almost a year ago. I am ready to have the next eye done, and I'd prefer he do it. One small disappointment in recent years is that Premier is not on our current health insurance company's preferred provider list, which means our out of pocket cost is a bit higher. However, as Dr. Calman is board certified, and has been in practice for so long, I feel that the extra expense is well worth having peace of mind! read more

Got passed off to someone in a white lab coat who appeared to be in mid-20s who just had me read he eye chart. I doubt she was even an optometrist. I only saw him when I insisted. He was disheveled . . . and notably put-off by my request. He did a perfunctory check of eyes. Can't imagine having him as a surgeon. This "shop" is geared to taking advantage of low-income folks who won't asked questions. read more

Horrible, incompetent staff. Somehow, my other care providers have no problem billing my insurance, yet Dr. Calman's staff can't seem to figure it out. Idiots. And my husband had a similar experience to kiwi I. Had to take off work (no mean feat), waited forever, still could not see Dr. Calman, staff refused to give him any kind of status or update. I've been seeing Dr Calman and his staff for over 3 years now and I personally have had a great experience with them. I was looking at the reviews others have posted (2 at time of writing) and I respectfully would disagree with some of their comments. First off, I too sometimes do not see Dr Calman at all when I come to the office and see one of his associates instead but I'm okay with that. If there is ever anything they are not sure of they will ask Dr Calman to review (has happened only a couple of times for me in the 3 years). If I had the choice, I would rather get an appointment with a practice within a week of calling and know that they prioritize who the main doctor sees based on their condition versus waiting several weeks for an appointment with a specialist only to be told that I'm okay (when you freak out as much as I do this is a better option!). All the doctors there give good explanations of what they are doing and the results along the way. The staff have always been friendly to me and billing has not been an issue (compared to nightmares I've had with other providers in the past). Yes parking is a pain but we live in San Francisco and parking is ALWAYS a pain! Tip: There are a bunch of residential parking areas just behind the office (East) and up the hill on Bernal Heights. read more

It has been several hours since I left his office and I am still amazed at how professional and friendly the office is, from the receptionists all the way up to the doctor. Dr Calman, Dr. Saldana and their assistant were thorough, proactive and not condescending or impatient like a lot of doctors and their staff. Dr. Calman even asked me for the names of all my doctors so that he can communicate the results of my visit to them. Amazing service like this is unheard of. I feel very lucky to be his new patient. Dr. Calman has been my eye doctor for 16 years. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't have my vision at all. I highly recommend him for all your vision problems. I have been a patient of Dr. Calman's for several years now and I'm ready to change. His staff is o.k. and he seems reasonably competent, but every time I go I feel like everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) is more concerned about getting rid of me as soon as possible so that they can get on to the next patient. In this day in age when many of us are finding it hard to hold on to a decent job, it is kind of hard to dredge up much sympathy for people who seem to have more patients than they can handle (it is called job security). In the past few months I have had to make monthly appointments to deal with a sty that won't go away. I am trying to follow what the doc and the O.D.s recommend, but it is hard because it requires a lot of time each day. I was told today that the alternatives were a surgical procedure or an injection. When I winced, Calman seemed to get impatient with me (not the first time) and coldly brushed me off saying it was "my decision." My decision is to find another doctor. These guys make way more money than me (even though I have about as much education and experience), so a little more "bed-side manner" would be appreciated. Furthermore, I do not believe that I have consistently received reliable information from him or the ODs on my visits. As someone who's been diabetic most my life, I need a lot of eye care. I trust Dr. Calman. He seems like he really knows what the cutting edge treatment is for helping diabetics avoid blindness. He will tell you straight, if you aren't doing everything to control you blood sugars. This can be hard to hear but I appreciate it. Other doctors are too nice, that doesn't help in the end. I take my mom (93 yrs old), 2 aunts (84 & 81 yrs old) to Drs. Calman & Chow in SF for over 10 yrs now. The 3 of them had excellent cataract surgeries, especially my other aunt who has very tiny eyes whereas Dr Calman took more hours to operate on her. At present my mom & other aunt have clear visions & do not use glasses. Drs. Calman & Chow diligently took care of their follow-ups and monitor their glaucomas. Being a resident in SF for 45 yrs, I know the meter parking situation in SF. Yes, maybe twice my mom & 2 aunts did not see Dr. Calman due to his emergency calls; however, Dr. Chow took care of the situations and we're pleased with the examination results. My mom had seen so many specialists in the past; sometimes her visits were canceled due to emergency cases when we're already in the doctors' office. These situations happen beyond the doctor's control especially when emergency & priority occurs. My 2 aunts left the country on June 2, 2012. We requested an Opthalmologist referral from Dr. Calman. Dr. Calman took his time to provide this information & the history of the specialist. The Receptionists are friendly and helpful. I'm 62 yrs. old and my husband is 63 yrs. old. We are definitely going to have Dr. Calman operate eye cataract surgeries on us in the near future. read more
