After a whole lifetime in Chicago, I failed to get tenure there and had to start over in Milwaukee. We didn't really know anyone in town, and although I've traveled all over the world, only Chicago has ever really been home. Maria comes from a big Catholic family in small town Western Michigan, and Christmas is a special time for her. Well thanks to the then strong public teacher union presence, my new job paid a living wage, for the first time we were able to afford a house. That house really became a home after we discovered Grandpa Vern's seasonal operation and got our first Christmas tree. Since then, we've found them every year, every December we get a wonderful fresh tree they've grown and brought down from their farm in Northern Wisconsin personally. Our 7 year tradition isn't yet impressive to them, they've been at this for two full generations. Their prices are so much better than what you would get in Chicago, the quality is much better, and they will secure the tree to the roof of your car competently and quickly. They take cash or cheques, no credit cards, the CVS next door has an ATM.

Went here last night for a potting class. We made butterfly planters. Included with the class was…read morea planter, planting soil, and six known plants that are known to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Four your 7th plant, you got to choose between dahlias or fennel. I chose the fennel for mine. The class even had 2 instructors who explained every plant and continuously walked around to check on everyone's work, making sure your plants were planted deep enough, or not to shallow. The class was $55 pp. For their classes it is best to call to reserve a spot. This was my first time here and I was blown away by the size of this place. It was like a huge maze with several greenhouses. Their plants did look colorful and healthy. They are definitely family orientated so bring the kids. In one of the greenhouse, there is a huge train set that continuously runs through several model villages, hills, tunnels and landscapes. There is also a small cafe, where you can take a break, This is family owned and all plants are grown on site.

Steins used to be a good store until Mr. Maurice Stein left the business. That's what happens when you farm out the business. Now the store is just overpriced stuff. You can go to Walmart & buy the same stuff for so much less. Shame on you! Other reviewers are correct. Staff is not helpful here & there is no customer service. Also true is that they do not honor their guarantee. I tried to get credit on a burning bush that withered away & was told it was my fault. Really, then what is the guarantee worth? I don't think I purposely killed it to get a store credit. I went to Lowe's & bought a burning bush for half the price & it is still thriving to this day.
