It's quite a small pub and it can get pretty busy on Friday and Saturday evenings, but the clientele are really friendly and warm, as are the staff, so it's not an issue. I've been drinking in here for well over ten years with a crowd of friends and it's become the traditional venue for our Christmas Eve pintage. The place was bought over several years ago by a well-known local publican who had a good reputation for fixing pubs up, getting them running well and moving on. He's never moved on from The Sheaf - which must tell you something! On draft there's always a really good selection of guest ales as well as the standards. There's been a real focus on ale in here and you're always assured something interesting to try. The staff are top-class, I'm always greeted with a warm smile. For me The Sheaf comes into it's own on a cold winter's night - it's small, cosy, there's an open fire, auld men with dogs, great malts, tasty ales and a warm welcome.

The bar is decently stocked and they have a couple of ale taps. The prices are pretty fair too. Free WiFi is a bonus and, as odd as it might be to say it, the bathrooms are really lovely. I'd be tempted to try the food which sounds like pretty standard pub grub but, given that this isn't obviously a part of any chain, it might actually be pretty good. Having never visited before it's unclear how extreme the improvements are, but I certainly agree that it's nice and comfy. There's plenty of seating, including booths and sofas. There's free WiFi, a couple of TVs and at least one fruit machine that I saw. It has a vibe that I'd associate with a more modern bar rather than a traditional pub but it's not really hipster either. They have a few good ales on the bar (I was drinking Drygate's Glad Eye) as well as cocktails available. We got served quickly by friendly staff who were happy to chat in spite of it being a Saturday night and relatively busy when we arrived. We were told that a DJ would be starting at 9pm. Normally, this would put me off but when he did get started I actually quite enjoyed his set and it wasn't played so loudly that people were forced to abandon their conversations (pet hate of mine in pubs). It's just a very appealing and relaxed place to hang out. I'll definitely be back. I need to try some of those cocktails.

I can't complain much at all about this boozer, the clientele is of a slightly more mature nature, but there is never any trouble and the beer is good. If anything the seats need to be widened to accommodate for my appalling posture, but it is otherwise an establishment of the highest caliber. Best buy is a pint of Belhaven Best, and if you're feeling classy, why not use it to wash down a pack of Scampi fries. Welcome to the world of Falkirk's elite.

Nowadays you only have a splitting headache to contend with in the morning rather than hallucinations due to the loss of fluid, but it's still just as enjoyable as ever. The walls are yellow from years of nicotine stains, Sweetheart Stout is on sale, and while it might look and feel like an "old man" pub, at weekends especially the punters come from a wide age range. It's my favourite pub of all, and nothing beats a sit down here with a Best and a bag of chilli nuts. It's been going well over 150 years and assuming Kim Jong-il doesn't push the red button, I expect it will last a few more centuries yet.

On the other hand, I am pretty much always up for a game of pool or two, so a bit bar with a bunch of pool tables is actually interesting. The bar is really quite big. So big that on a Friday night at ~7pm it felt kind of empty, even though there were a few people around. We ordered a couple of beers (maybe just slightly pricier than average but not by much) and headed upstairs for a few rounds of pool. They have both American and British tables available. There's a £10 deposit to pay and then you pay by the hour for your time using the table, I think it was £5 an hour. I got beaten for 3 out of the 3 games that we played and while I'd like to blame Sportsters for that, I probably can't. During our games there was a little live music - a guy with a guitar was playing a few soft rock classics and he wasn't bad. It's perhaps a slightly odd thing to have in a sports bar but I thought it was a nice touch.

However the staff can handle it and even seem to be unusually cheerful for Wetherspoons staff. I'm not sure I'd visit here first of the pubs available in Falkirk, but it's not bad, and it's always nice to know that there's a place available with cheap beer and plenty of seats.

My husband really enjoyed a pint or two of 'Glencoe Wild Oats' which he said was excellent! The staff were very pleasant and helpful. One of them (I don't know his name) was a bit of a local historian and he told us about the history of the building and showed me some of the old pictures on the wall. It was named after the famous Carron Ironworks here, established in 1759, which became Scotland's largest industrial complex and dominated the area for 200 years. Perhaps a little dark inside or maybe it just seemed that way because we called in for a meal on a bright sunny day. Despite the history and pictures I felt this pub lacked some of the character and more attractive surroundings of some of the others we've come to know.
