The Tolbooth Tavern is a pub. A pub-type pub. Not a wine bar or a cocktail bar or a hipster-ish craft ale high art concept, no, it's just a pub.
Nothing wrong with that, of course, and it's very popular with the locals. It feels like the kind of place where everyone already knows everyone else and most of the patrons have probably been coming here for years. This gives it a friendly atmosphere, with people shouting hello to each other from across the bar, and others happy to strike up conversations with the new and interesting outsiders (e.g. yours truly).
The bar is decently stocked and they have a couple of ale taps. The prices are pretty fair too. Free WiFi is a bonus and, as odd as it might be to say it, the bathrooms are really lovely.
I'd be tempted to try the food which sounds like pretty standard pub grub but, given that this isn't obviously a part of any chain, it might actually be pretty good.
My favourite thing about the Tolbooth Tavern: There are signs outside claiming that the place is haunted. read more
