1st tee
Robin S.

Callahan Links is a fine course. Well maintained, interesting and fair to the average golfer. Rates are pretty good, too. - Full length par 72, plays over 5000 from the forward (white) tees and over 6000 from the middle and back (blue and black). The scorecard has a 'Members' round where you play from some white tees and some blue tees. They have a separate rating for that. - Tee boxes are fine. - Fairways are generally in great shape. I saw a few bare patches but not many. Some tight lies, though. - Greens are also in great shape. When I played, they were quite soft. My ball frequently made a large mark in the surface. While not the slopiest greens, you will find some challenging reads. - I managed to avoid all the bunkers but they seemed to be in good condition. [Second round - I found myself in several bunkers. Some are in good shape, some are a little firm. No bad bunkers seen.) - I like the course design in that on several holes, I had options on how to play it. I don't hit long but I found I could score well by laying up. A lot of courses stymie short hitters in places. - Carts are gas-powered, which is not the best IMO. No amenities like GPS or on-board drink coolers, but it worked just fine. - No beverage cart service. There probably could be a few more water coolers at the tee boxes, too. (Weekend round - they have a beverage cart!) - Pace of play seemed good. Golfers seemed to respect other people. The group ahead of me consisted of a pre-teen boy obviously learning the game, a teen-aged girl (who had a nice golf swing - better than mine) and an older non-playing woman (mother?). All the while they were playing, I could see they were mindful of slowing me up, which they didn't. - I like that they have directions marked on the cart path. There are a few places where you might otherwise get confused, such as where the paths criss-cross. - There is no starter. You just tee off when ready, I think. Maybe on the weekends it gets busier and they control it more. I arrived 45 minutes before my tee time and was told I could go right then if I wanted to. And it's not like the place was a ghost town. Plenty of golfers. (Second round on the weekend - more golfers and they do have a starter) - They have a driving range. Not the largest but big enough to accommodate players wanting to warm up. It's a short walk from the clubhouse. - They have a practice putting green right next to the clubhouse. Seemed to be in good condition. - I did not see a short game practice area. - Clubhouse has a cafe, although no one was minding or using it on a Wednesday afternoon, but it was in operation on Saturday. - Large parking lot and easy access from I-75. The owners obviously care about their course. That comes through on their website and on the course itself. I saw a whole lot of folks out maintaining the course and the general condition is quite good. I really enjoyed playing a round here. They also bill it as a 'links' course. I don't know. Even the website description of what a links course is doesn't seem to fit Callahan. There are no pot bunkers; there is no really long rough, the greens don't tend to merge into the fairway allowing long putts off the green; it's not in a windy, coastal setting. It seems more like a typical American golf course. I could be off base. What do I know? Recommended.

Good price commensurate with the course conditions . Slow pace and no sign of a marshall. Good option in a pinch.

The Highlands Course at Lake Arrowhead

When you go to Lake Arrowhead's website (https://bit.ly/3pkHowZ), the first thing you see in big…read moreletters is "Metro Atlanta's Best Kept Secret." They've got a point. I've lived in Atlanta since 2000 and have played at numerous golf courses in Georgia over the decades: https://bit.ly/3OtHDQZ. Until recently, I had no idea this course was hidden away in the northwest metro. If I recall correctly, I learned about Lake Arrowhead when I did a Yelp search, years ago, for "new" courses to play in Georgia: https://bit.ly/3bIYIbv. My friends and I made the trek out to Waleska and I think all of us were pleasantly surprised. Overall, the course was in good condition, the views were beautiful (there were more scenic holes than I expected), service was great, and the value was excellent (thanks to Golf Moose). I told my friends we should play at Lake Arrowhead (since it had been on my list to play) and one of them sent me a deal from Golf Moose (iDealGolfer). The deal was 18 holes for two golfers with cart for $49. The fine print said there was an additional $20 fee per player to play before 1pm on Saturday, Sunday, & course holidays, paid to course at check-in. We had an 11am tee time on a Saturday, so we paid the extra $20 each. In total, we paid $44.50 each. That's it, a pretty good deal for a daily fee on a course of this caliber. Even Lake Arrowhead's regular golf rates, at the time of writing this review, are a decent value with the max rate being $64 per golfer for 18 holes with cart. If this course was closer to Atlanta, they might be able to get away with charging $80, maybe even $90. There is some tradeoff. It's a hike to get up to Waleska if you live in town. I've played at some other courses not too far away, such as Callahan Golf Links (https://bit.ly/3p3SpCo) and Fairways of Canton (https://bit.ly/3SxBrdi). Those are far and Lake Arrowhead is even farther. From my home in Midtown Atlanta, it took a solid hour to get here (actually more since I hit construction traffic on 75 north). I've played at Cobblestone Golf Course on Lake Acworth (https://bit.ly/3SxSJqJ) and Lanier Islands Legacy Golf Course on Lake Lanier (https://bit.ly/3JFI0Xm). I've known about those lake courses for years, but had no idea about Lake Arrowhead. The actual Lake Arrowhead lake is significantly smaller than the aforementioned lakes, but it is a legitimate lake and not a glorified large pond like East Lake (http://bit.ly/33JiIlF). ;) Unlike Cobblestone, Lanier Islands, and East Lake, Lake Arrowhead's golf course doesn't border its namesake lake nor does it even have views of the lake. You do get a nice view of the lake as you enter the property, though. If you look closely in some places, like Golf Moose and the golf course's physical scorecard, you'll see that the course is named "The Highlands Course." Instead of lake views, it boasts picturesque mountain views. I consider this a mountain course. It's significantly hillier than your typical Georgia courses, which are already hilly. You're entering North Georgia mountain territory in this part of the state. In some ways, Lake Arrowhead reminds me of Lanier Islands. They're both gated lake resorts roughly an hour north of Atlanta. However, Lake Arrowhead is much smaller. Both resorts have named their courses, but don't be fooled - there is only one course at each resort (I think Lanier Islands used to have two, but now there's only one). The Highlands Course at Lake Arrowhead opened in Fall 2008 which makes it one of the newest courses in metro Atlanta. I'm not sure I can count on one hand how many courses have opened in and around Atlanta since then (the Great Recession). The Highlands Course is hard. It will give you all you can handle. From the tips (black tees), the course measures 6,998 yards with a difficult 75.3/138 rating/slope. I played from the white tees at 6,049 yards, 71.4/130. If it's your first time playing here and you want to shoot a decent score for yourself, I recommend playing conservatively. Lay up. This course has several challenging forced carries and you have to do a good job accounting for elevation changes. My friend described it as "target golf." There is really an emphasis on course management here. You have to pick the right clubs and play the right shots. There's not a whole lot of room for error. The risk-reward is high. I do think the landing areas are reasonable. The fairways are wide and generally accepting, and the greens are big. As far as course conditions, for the price paid, we weren't complaining. Most of the fairways, bunkers, and greens were in good shape, though there were some trouble spots that you wouldn't find on a higher-end course. On-course restrooms are located on the front nine, on hole 4, and on the back nine, just before the 14th tee. All staff I interacted with were terrific, from Devin and Aaron in the pro shop (polite) to cart girl Rosanna, who picked me up at my car, and starter Jeff, who was welcoming and friendly.

If you're familiar with golf courses in metro Atlanta, Eagle Watch is located immediately next to Towne Lake Hills Golf Club. Both courses are in the Woodstock neighborhood of Towne Lake, just off I-575 exit 8. I like both courses. The big difference between the two is Eagle Watch is private and Towne Lake is public. Eagle Watch is currently a ClubCorp course and, for some reason, is paired with Bentwater Golf Club in Acworth. The courses are about 35 minutes apart (without traffic). I remember when these courses operated independently of each other (and when Bentwater was public). The only reason I can think of as to why ClubCorp paired them together is to sell more memberships. Get two courses for the price of one. Eagle Watch used to belong to Canongate (also private at the time) until ClubCorp acquired them in a large package deal in 2014. Eagle Watch has all the typical country club amenities and then some. Along with the 18-hole, par-72 golf course, there are 12 tennis courts, pools, a playground for kids, and even an outdoor basketball court and beach volleyball. The clubhouse is nice and spacious. I wouldn't characterize this club as high-end, but it's certainly not low-tier either. It's middle of the pack. There's a driving range, large practice putting green, and a practice short game area with bunker. The course is one of less than 10 in the state of Georgia designed by the Arnold Palmer Design Company. I'm not sure how much of a hand Arnie actually had in the design of Eagle Watch, but it's cool his name is attached. Like other Palmer clubs, the clubhouse has memorabilia dedicated to The King. The course opened in 1989. It has bermudagrass fairways and bentgrass greens. When we played, the course, from tee to green, was generally in good condition. There are five sets of tees to play from. From the tips (gold), the course measures "only" 6,741 yards with a rating/slope of 72.8/143. From the whites, where we played from, the course measures 5,677 yards with a 68.0/125 rating/slope. I'd say this course is average or slightly above average in difficulty. The course is hilly, which is typical of a Georgia course, but it's more pronounced here. Some of the elevation changes are significant and make some of the holes scenic and memorable. There are no large bodies of water to contend with, but several small ponds and some creeks. While the course winds and weaves its way through a subdivision, most of the holes are tree-lined. The signature hole is No. 14, a moderate to long par-3 with a forced carry over a pond. Paired with a bunker left of the green, there's not much room for error. On top of that, if you're shooting for birdie, you'll have to place your ball on the correct side of the green as it's two-tiered. It's not as intimidating as it sounds. The 17th is another par-3 over water and it's one of the easier holes. The most difficult hole is No. 2, a long dogleg-right par-4. It's the longest par-4 on the course (446 yards from the tips, 390 from the whites) and the No. 1 handicap hole. Err to the right on your approach. I had an enjoyable round here and wouldn't mind playing this track again. We had fun.

Ben was our server and handed us menus that were extremely simple and easy to follow. Ben went over the specials for food and drinks and within 15 minutes our food was served. We both ordered brunch foods I had the pancakes, eggs and bacon while my wife enjoyed eggs Benedict. All foods were tasty and delicious with one exception was that the eggs Benedict were slightly over cooked and yolk lacked fluidity. However, the lady at the table next to us ordered the same meal and hers came out perfect. Without complaining we assumed that the delicious smoked bacon on my plate may have taken extra time and my wife's egg yolks may have sat and cooked firm while my bacon took extra minutes. Not a problem, still satisfied with flavor!! The staff and location deserves 5 Stars and two thumbs up for extraordinary service and hospitality. The employees provide a top notch service! Absolutely enjoyed our time at the course. They have a great maintained driving range to get some practice in before your round. The starter at the 1st tee was extremely professional and made sure everyone got off in a timely manner. They even drive around to keep you updated on pace of play. Don't pull up to this course for the first time and expect to have a good scoring day. It's an extremely difficult course considering most of the greens are tough to read and have different tiers to them. Even if you're on the green in two you might end up three putting if you're 20ft out. The first hole is a long par 5 that truly shows how the tough the course can be. If you're a long hitter it's reachable in 2. Overall, Cobblestone is a great course that you definitely need to check out. Fairways are beautiful, great views, amazing greens.
