Awesome find! This place was recommended by a local friend and it really is a place that you can drive by without realizing that there is a FREE museum that takes about the California Trail. When I was younger I learned about the Oregon trail that was used in the 1800s and it was interest to find a place dedicated to the less well known California Trail. The center is a pretty decent size for something free and offered a variety of exhibits inside and out. It was a pretty hot day, so the family mostly stayed on the inside. I had our dog, so I opted to check out the outside exhibits and the short walking trail with an overlook of the museum. The staff was really great and friendly and they had a gift shop onsite. Great place to spend your money to show your appreciation for this place! Next time I pass along 80 I will definitely make another trip in the interior. If you are not sure about making a stop on a long trip, this is a nice refreshing stop compared to a rest stop. There is also a water refill station and clean bathrooms on site!

This is the 2nd time I visited this place on the way back home from Salt Lake... what a beautiful facility, with all of the explanations and dioramas and history of the journey of the Donner party and many other pioneers heading west on the California Trail.. there's indoor as well as outdoor exhibits. Highly recommend it's worth the stop.

This is a one of a kind stop on I80 Westbound just outside of Elko. It is a "hands on" type of educational center that focuses on the migration west from St. Louis, MO to California. Outside near the parking lot is a covered wagon and team of oxen that draws you in. When you enter, your in the gift shop and the staff counter is right ahead of you. The one volunteer we met the day we went was very welcoming and patiently explained the center to us. Pass the counter is the exhibits and outside the building is some trails that we would have done if the weather was better. When I entered, I was fascinated to read about the history of this mass migration. This is not actually a museum as there are not much artifacts compared to things you can actually touch, hold, move etc. There was even an exhibit where you could smell the part of the trail where the wagon trains struggled the most through the desert and the cattle were dying enroute. Phew! The whole exhibit gives you a better idea of how much of a struggle it was for people who moved out west wether it was for farming, gold prospecting, new lives etc. I have been a history nut for years (even majored in it in college) so a place like this is fascinating to me. Another tidbit about this place; if you have a National Parks Passport books, bring it as there is a stamp for this place to be entered in your book. The volunteer told us that very few people know this because this place doesn't seem like a conventional national park. If you forget your book, they have white circular stickers for sale that you could stamp and stick in your book. We were told that it is closed on Sundays and Mondays so keep that in mind.

Really cool experience just off of 80 about 8 miles west of Elko. It is a newer facility that is very nicely done and admission is free. My wife and I both agree it would be great for kids because of all the interactive activities inside. We visited on a cold snowy day but they also have some outdoor activities. If you look closely at the front walkway to the entrance you can see the westward trails in the paving blocks on a large scale. They have a very nice gift shop inside that has books, magnets, t-shirts, hats, Etc Even if you don't have a lot of time it's a good pit stop for an hour or so.

The California Trail a 3,000 mile trail starting at Missouri and ending in California. 400,000 people used this trail to arrive to Oregon, California, and Utah. The estimated amount of deaths ranges from 9,700 to 21,000. This trail was not cheap to travel on though because to travel on this road in the later years of use cost 10.00 per person or 30.00 per wagon which at the time was a fairly large price. Here we learned how so many died and those who didn't die ate and even killed Native Americans just so that they could survive. It is a scary part of history. The weather was so harsh and they were so not prepared. The interactive exhibits were very educational. Something that really saddened us was the burial of a 8 year old boy and you can see a coyote digging it up. Elizabeth and I enjoyed dressing up here.

This place is a great informational trip! So much history on the Oregon trail/pony express. It's a very visual place with a lot of hands on stuff for adults , but mostly for the kiddos. They have a lot of videos on information, but sadly they are currently experiencing electrical issues. The ranger who gives out information at the front desk is super friendly and helpful. It can be as long or as short of an exhibit as you make it. My kids powered through it this time, but I will be back as soon as possible. They also have a really sweet gift shop with a lot of stuff they used to have for entertainment back then. Also, food and clothing. Definitely go check this free place out and donate to keep it going!

This is such an interesting place. It's tucked away off the 80. It tells the poignant stories of trail blazers. It's exciting, somber and just so unique. The trials of people blazing trails is incredible. I highly recommend checking this out. It's free to enter, operates on donations and a really neat gift shop. The displays and dioramas are just awesome. It is one of the best museums/centers I've seen done. It's pretty new so I'm guessing alot of thought went into it being so amazing. Even has gender neutral bathrooms. Plenty of parking and fair amount of visitor traffic . It's in the middle of nowhere, and if you blink you'll miss the sign. If driving 80 through northern Nevada, make sure you plan it out!

This place is really well done. We certainly could have stayed longer but only spent about 45 minutes before getting back on the road. The exhibits are all high quality and it's full of great information about an incredible part of our history.

After a few attempts at getting to this museum before closing time, I was finally successful in getting there an hour before it closed. I wish I'd had more than an hour so I could have had more time to spend reading the information at the displays and doing the hands on activities. Some of the displays are very realistic and gave me a more comprehensive idea of what it was like traveling on the California trail. I also learned additional information about the Donner party that I did not know. I highly recommend taking the time to stop by this museum, especially if you have been traveling for hours with kids in the car.

Located just outside of Elko, this little museum is well worth a stop for anyone traveling on I-80. It is a free museum focusing on the various historical trails (California, Oregon, Mormon, etc). but also has some info about the Native American culture of the area. The exhibits are well done and have a lot of great info and interactions. Even the kids will enjoy it (there is a pioneer dress up area and a wagon that kids can get up in). Plan for about 1-2 hours to go through the museum and the outdoor exhibits. Plus, there are a number of poke stops and a couple of gyms on the grounds.

Impressive museum with a connection to Native American culture and history via board members who are local Native American tribe members.

This museum is dedicated to the preservation of the vaquero (this is Spanish for cowboy to the uninitiated) and the American Buckaroo. The Cowboy Arts & Gear Museum is full of history, culture and traditions of the cowboy of the American West. The idea of the American cowboy is kind of romantic to many, but it is actually the daily life of people of live in this region of Nevada. This museum brings the past and present together in an easy digestible way for the museum goer to understand. Housed in the actual shop of the famous saddle maker G.S. Garcia (the building itself is well over 100 years old), this museum is full of gorgeous saddles and beautiful silver work. Family photographs, images, bits, spurs, stories, saddles, belt buckles...there is a lot on display. The museum is only one floor and would not take a ton of time to wander through. There is a cute little gift shop area in the back selling souvenirs as well. The director, Jan Peterson, was there the day we wandered through while visiting Elko for the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. She was so enthusiastic and welcoming of our visit and had a passion for this museum project in this community. A great little museum for this area and a great little museum to celebrate the American west and the spirit of the cowboy.

I snagged some last minute tickets to one of their evening events (cash only), grabbed myself a beer (bud light) and a seat, and enjoyed 1.5 hours of cowboy culture. I never knew there was so much "culture" that went into agriculture. It was so enjoyable and the performers were fabulous! Four cowboys told the tale of their passion and work through songs, stories and poetry. A wonderful way to experience the culture of the wild west. I will certainly be back next year, and might even consider making a special trip to Elko just for this event, as many others do.

When I told my dad I was going to Elko for a work trip, he said, "oh wow! That's the same week as…read morethe Cowboy Poetry Gathering!" I can't say that it's something I would have sought out, but I stashed that little fact away as I prepared for my trip. I asked a few locals about it, and started to understand that this is a BIG event. People travel to Elko from all over to the world for this event year after year. I don't have a specific interest in country music or cowboy culture, but I do have a general interest in cultural events, and decided that we just had to experience this event! Luckily, my colleagues were game, so we headed down to the Folklife Center and bought our $20 tickets (cash only!) and our bottled Bud Light ($3). The show was absolutely fantastic! There are a variety of events throughout the Gathering...ours consisted of 1 cowboy poet (Paul Zarzynski), 1 solo singer (Gail Steiger), and a duo of singers (Cowboy Celtic). There was a nice interplay between the group, and all three were amazing additions to the show. The poet mixed emotion with comedy, the singer told stories about his grandfather and his experiences as a lifelong cowboy. The duo sang about a variety of topics, and were really spectacular. All in all, an amazing show. We all had a great time and left the event with smiles on our faces. We are already talking about trying to plan next year's Elko work trip during the Cowboy Poetry Gathering so we can check out more events!
