When I first walked into Guitar Center on Garet Place and met Eric after setting up an appointment by phone, I was suprised to see such a youthful technician, in all honesty. I wanted 2 very valuable guitars set up as best as possible (2 vintage Charvels from the Custom shop). He immediately began examining the guitars and went through a number of minor faults just from a visual examination. I said to myself "damn, he's good..." I would've never picked up on these inconsistencies to the guitars' neck's, etc ... After only a FEW hours, Eric called me to say the guitars were BOTH prepared. I said "man, that was quick ..." After getting both guitars back home, hooking them up, and playing them, all I can say is what a world of difference he made, utilizing his impeccable technical proficiencies and craftsmanship. I mean they played and felt fantastic. Perfect intonation, tuning, neck adjustment, fretboard feel, the action was amazing, etc ... I can go on and on. The sound of both guitars was balanced and bright. A highly skilled, experienced, and honest Luthier is Eric (he'll tell you straight, exactly what you're looking at, as far as major or minor repairs). Erik did a great job repairing a Rickenbacker 4003 bass that was brought to him recently. He actually diagnosed it while we waited and determined that the treble pickup was dead and most likely needed a rewind. The pickup had to be sent out to his "pickup guy" for a rewind which was done in a very timely manner and expertly done as well. The end result after Erik reinstalled the pickup and did a few wiring fixes was the killer tone that Rickenbacker basses are famous for was fully restored along with the cleaning and polishing Erik also did it once again looked as good as it sounded. Erik runs a very professional, organized guitar repair business and you get treated with a very personal touch there. Steer clear of Sam Ash and Guitar Center repair and set up services, this is 100% the place to go to. The store and the workshop were immaculate and very well-organized, and there's even a few amps with a set of pedals for you to play around with when your guitar is ready. I only trust my guitars with Eric. If it's an expensive Gibson or a Chinese import, Eric takes the time with my instruments and when I receive them back, they play and feel great. He'll explain your options before any work is done. He's honest & he'll tell you what's best for your guitar. His work is meticulous with a fine attention to detail. I once brought my vintage Les Paul Custom to one of the luthiers on Long Island who I was told was the very best. When I got the guitar back, it appeared that all he did was change the strings. I came to Erik because I had a newly brought 6 string bass to have the action lessened. Instead of doing the work Erik took the extra time to verify that in fact there were problems with the instrument that would make it unplayable regardless of the action issue. I was 3 months inside the 1 year warranty if it expired would have cost me over $1200. Instead of doing the work he made the responsible and honest call.....and I would definitely refer anyone to him. Long story short (yes this is the short version) I got the instrument totally replaced by the manufacturer (who confirmed that the neck in unplayable) and when I brought it to Erik again, he tweaked it and didn't charge me much. I received a Fishman Matrix Infinity Blend Pickup system from Santa Claus. For the installation I needed a skilled technician, as the lattice top construction of my Alhambra Signature Series Model C Classical Guitar is delicate and complex. Erik installed the pickup perfectly in less than 24hrs. I was able to use the guitar (amplified) over the weekend for a large recital, and it worked to perfection. About 6 months ago I entrusted Eric with a major repair and tune up of my Martin dreadnought acoustic guitar. There was a huge crack in the spruce top from years of neglect and the intonation was just awful. He took the time to rehydrate the instrument before taking action, then devised the proper plan of repair. Upon pickup, he carefully explained how to properly care for my instrument moving forward. Here we are 6 months later, and the repair and intonation have held up perfectly. Each time I pick it up to play I smile. After my long-time guitar tech/repair person retired several years ago, I've tried many others in the NY-LI area. Luckily, I have found my way to GRLI. Erik has worked on several of my guitars, and proven to be an excellent diagnostician, as well as having the knowledge and experience that make you feel comfortable leaving your favorite instruments in his care. Took my new Eastwood parlor guitar to Erick for mounting ebony Waverly tuners on it, a job beyond my capabilities to perform myself. Turn around was surprisingly fast and the guitar came out looking and playing great. Erick explained the particular difficulties mounting on a slotted headstock and when I got it home, his work was spotless. Very nice. Will take in my Loar archtop next for some work when I go pick up the baby Taylor he's working on for me as well. Brought a vintage piece in that had developed buzzing around the neck joint. Was convinced I was heading for some pricey fretwork or worse a neck reset. Erik took out his tools, made a bunch of measurements and solved the issue with truss rod/and saddle adjustments. He handed the guitar back to me with the action probably lower than it had been but minus the buzz. The skill and HONESTY shown here was much appreciated. I brought my tele in for a set-up for an open tuning which required the nut to be refiled. Erik noticed that the stock saddles on the tele wouldn't allow for proper intonation and recommended an alternative saddle.
