The first place I ever tried indoor rock-climbing was at the Stronghold just of Centre Street. I think one of the reasons I loved it so much was that I immediately felt like I was walking into a community. Everyone seem to know you and they were excited that there was someone new to bring into the fold. Now since I'm not an expert climber, I can't really comment on the "courses" that are set up, but as a beginner I had a great time climbing. They were easy, but challenging. The staff really seemed like a coherent team and were willing to take time to teach you properly, after all it is their jobs. And if you don't have anyone to go with, don't worry. They have a machine that help you climb by yourself! Seems a bit sketchy, but it totally worked! As the winter months get closer and closer, you might want to look into Stronghold!

I spend 4 months every year in San Diego area and can confidently say that, in comparison, this is a better gym for its wider range of facilities and competitive annual fees for seniors. What makes it a pleasure to visit the gym are its friendly employees. I can cite Charrito, Witold and Alyza as representative employees that assist with smile.

It's a tier 1 facility which means drop in fees/memberships are cheaper than the tier 2 facilities and you can also use your tier 2 membership/passes here if you have one. They have a smaller 18.25m 4 lane pool that's in a half-basement with a nice sauna. The shorter pool might not be best for hardcore training but you do get to say you've done way more laps than you normally would and it is also amazingly deserted for a City of Calgary pool. I hate swimming in crowded lanes and it's usually very empty here. They also have drop in classes and programs of all varieties for children and adults alike. There is a respectable fitness centre with some free weighs as well as machines and regular cardio machines. The outdoor rock climbing wall is also now open! You can climb as long as you've done a belay lesson and signed a waiver and there are auto-belays for you to climb unsupervised. Definitely recommend checking this place out; I think it's way better value than most gyms and I love the variety of activities available! The staff are also super friendly and helpful!

We've consistently run into issues with equipment setup here, and this night was easily the worst. We showed up expecting the court to be ready, and the volleyball net wasn't even set up. After asking for help, the staff member who came down brought equipment that clearly hadn't been checked. One of the posts had a snapped rope, and the net was completely tangled, which took a long time to rethread and fix. What really stood out was the lack of urgency and accountability. We were told this was the only net available, and then the staff member just left us there with no solution. Meanwhile, a full group of people who booked and paid for the court were stuck standing around trying to fix broken equipment themselves. I went back upstairs a second time to the front desk asking for help, either to find replacement equipment or another staff member who could actually assist. Eventually, I ended up going into their staff storage area myself as a customer, where I found multiple usable replacement posts sitting there the entire time. So the equipment was available, it just wasn't provided. By the time everything was finally set up, we were over a half hour into our booking and it threw off the entire night. At this point, it's not just frustrating, it's a pattern. For a facility that has repeat bookings from organized leagues, this level of disorganization and lack of preparation just isn't acceptable.

When i signed up for their AST1 course, it took them over a week to get back to me with answers to my questions. I even ended up calling their guides at home to help me. And then at the AST1 course, we were not given any hard copies of the course - the presenter just read everything off the screen to us. And two weeks later, I have left several email and voice mail messages as I need to present my AST1 certificate to my hiking club in order to hike/snowshoe/ski in avalanche terrain. And they are not answering any of these. Please be wary with this company as times are tough in Alberta and they might be another casualty.

After checking in with the front desk person I waited 25 minutes and then left. It's unfortunate that the front desk didn't even realize that Mary wasn't even there. She wasn't working that day at all. I felt very unimportant. It has been my previous experience that sometimes volunteering is a little dangerous in the respect that people sometimes don't value the volunteers' time or efforts since they aren't paid. Mary has been very apologetic, she likely does that often I suspect. Anyway I'm not going to pursue this further. A word of caution if you plan on volunteering here, the other reviews suggest this is an organizational mess.
