The first place I ever tried indoor rock-climbing was at the Stronghold just of Centre Street. I think one of the reasons I loved it so much was that I immediately felt like I was walking into a community. Everyone seem to know you and they were excited that there was someone new to bring into the fold. Now since I'm not an expert climber, I can't really comment on the "courses" that are set up, but as a beginner I had a great time climbing. They were easy, but challenging. The staff really seemed like a coherent team and were willing to take time to teach you properly, after all it is their jobs. And if you don't have anyone to go with, don't worry. They have a machine that help you climb by yourself! Seems a bit sketchy, but it totally worked! As the winter months get closer and closer, you might want to look into Stronghold!

And beautiful landscaping outside. And they use the parking lot for an amazing Calgary farmers market on the summer weekends. Many of our games are booked at the Calgary Jewish Center, so after a number of years in this league, I am quite impressed with this facility. I haven't seen the entire centre, but the area that I frequent has a very large gym, well-equipped change rooms, and our games are played in a fully stocked gymasium, where we play volleyball, basketball, dodgeball, floor hockey and soccer. I have also taken some yoga classes there, and their yoga studio is very impressive as well! If you live in the SW, definately check out the programs at this center. It is open to all to take fitness classes!

Our instructor Kimberley was very personable and knowledgeable. She did a great job leading the course and paid special attention to make sure my daughter was on top of all of knots and equipment checks. We would definitely recommended her. The only thing I think that this library does not have is the stationary computers that you can print fro because with you library card you get $5.00 of free printing a month and I couldn't find a printer for that here. Also their kid zone is a little smaller than the others. They have great programs. One program that I went to on a Thursday was the science program that is in the afternoon and they did a segment on optical illusions!

The YMCA offers plenty of swim classes, but relatively low number of options for land classes given the price of the memberships. The Remington YMCA building is also home to the Quarry Park library which is quite lovely. You do not need a membership with the YMCA to access it.

It's a tier 1 facility which means drop in fees/memberships are cheaper than the tier 2 facilities and you can also use your tier 2 membership/passes here if you have one. They have a smaller 18.25m 4 lane pool that's in a half-basement with a nice sauna. The shorter pool might not be best for hardcore training but you do get to say you've done way more laps than you normally would and it is also amazingly deserted for a City of Calgary pool. I hate swimming in crowded lanes and it's usually very empty here. They also have drop in classes and programs of all varieties for children and adults alike. There is a respectable fitness centre with some free weighs as well as machines and regular cardio machines. The outdoor rock climbing wall is also now open! You can climb as long as you've done a belay lesson and signed a waiver and there are auto-belays for you to climb unsupervised. Definitely recommend checking this place out; I think it's way better value than most gyms and I love the variety of activities available! The staff are also super friendly and helpful!

I've only tried the CrossFit classes here, but they also offer various martial arts such as Muay Thai and Brazilian Jujitsu. The facility is divided between a very large floor mat sparring area, a full sized fighting octagon, and a functional fitness area for CrossFit (pull up bars, barbell racks, jumping boxes, etc.). The men's "change room" consists of a small semi-closed off cluster of lockers in the main gym area. The women have an actual room. Being located in an industrial park, there is plenty for parking. The CrossFit classes at this location differ from the others I have tried insofar as they tend to be consistently focused on constant high rep, high intensity intuitive exercises (e.g. box jumps, kipping pull ups, push up pyramids, crunches) and a few barbell moves. This is in contrast to some other CrossFits where you can spend a significant portion of a class working on developing a particular "functional" movement like a headstand, barbell combos, or some kettle bell manoeuvre. If you're looking for an efficient calorie burning, stamina building workout class you can dive into without much of a learning curve, try this place.

From the first time he walked in the owner, Tim was so friendly and welcoming. I expected a bunch of crazy juice monkeys. Boy was I wrong. A big mix of people train here. Kids to grandmas and top athletes in between. Everyone has completely welcomed my son and encouraged him to stick with it. I'm excited to see my son progress and gain strength and stamina for his future in criminology. My son has taken advantage of their cross/cage fit classes in the morning. And his membership includes Jujitsu (or Muay Thai) which he'll start soon. We highly recommend this gym.

There is a climbing wall, a huge water slide, a tarazan type rope, huge hot tub, large kiddie pool, diving board and lazy river. My kids love it. I booked a birthday party here and they have several rooms to choose from and the price is pretty decent. You can bring in whatever food you want and they set up and clean up the room for you. You can put up your own decorations but time is limited in the room so I never did. They provide wrist bands for the kids and if I recall correctly you get a couple for the adults who are supervising. My only complaint is the girls at the front where you go to pay for swimming were harsh with the kids who were really excited to go in, telling them to go back and line up on the other side, there was no marked signage as to where the line up starts and its not like Vivo where if you have a pass you can go on through the fast line. Other than that its a really good activity center to visit if you don't mind making the 20 min drive out of Calgary.
